Anyone lives in Port Washington and commutes to Manhattan?

How is life out there? Chat Icon How do you like PW? How is your commute time wise and convenience wise (and where in NYC do you work)? How is the school situation?

I looked at all the statistics, of course, but nothing is a good info from actual residents!

We are looking into the area as a possible place to relocate to so I would appreciate all the info!

I don't live there, but port Washington is beautiful. Plus the port Washington lirr branch is the best, it doesn't even go through Jamaica. Easy train ride.

I don't live in PW but know the area well, it is an awesome town. If you commute by LIRR it is perfect, my complaint is that to get into PW from the LIE or northern blvd is like 10 minutes, for me that would be annoying as I commute by car and the idea that leaving my town to get to a highway takes 10 minutes gives me anxiety lol

Make that 20-30 with red light cameras and cops and traffic. It's maddening.

I live in Port and commute into NYC on the LIRR (midtown/57th)...

First on the town - love it! We have been here just over a year. We live in the Salem neighborhood which is the first one as you approach from LIE, so it's like a 5 min drive off the highway.

Even though the train is "36 mins," my commute is 1 hr 15 mins door to door. I take the subway once I get into Penn.

The only downside on commuting is the town has gotten an influx of young families lately (GUILTY) so parking at the train has gotten tougher. You cannot take a train later than 7:36 and get a spot. Living walking distance to the train is a good idea.

But on the upside there are tons of young families! And the town is gorgeous. Daycare is limited in our town (waitlists) and we have a nanny for that reason. Schools are great and highly rated.

FM me with any other questions!

I live one town over and used to commute.. Great train line as far as anything can be great when it comes to the LIRR. I love PW.. my family and I go there a lot, parks, restaurants etc.. very cute town. The schools are good. The only downside and one of the reasons we didn't move there is the proximity to the LIE. Its at least a 10-15 minute drive with lights traffic etc and depending on where in port you are could be closer to 30 minutes.
