STAR question

We just got a bill for 1400 dollars from STAR,we bought out house a year ago and have finally been approved

Is this a one Time fee or do I. Pay this every year?

Also so starting next year,my mortgage should be lower (a very small amount) bc my taxes should go down right?

Sorry, all this stuff is new to me

Thanks!

Re: STAR question

You shouldn't be receiving a bill from STAR. It is free to apply for and there is no fee.

Did you receive a bill because the prior owners protested the taxes?

Re: STAR question

It says the total savings on your most recent school
Tax bill for the tax year 2015/16 (oct 1st,2015) is $1,425.44

As per the agreement you signed "StAR exemption advisors fee is equal to the first year tax savings"

I'm confused.

STAR question

You owe them that money out of pocket so technically, the 1st year you won't see the savings as it will be deducted from your taxes.

While it is free to file, etc.. i was ok with my lawyer doing the leg work and paying 1/2 of what i was saved. I only owed him 450 so not as bad as a hit with 1400.

Sorry...there is nothing you can do as you signed a contract.

If you don't have a copy the agreement you signed request one from the company that sent you the bill. I wouldn't pay it without researching exactly what it is.

Re: STAR question

Wait. Is this a tax reduction bill? Is the bill in your name? Did you sign off on the tax reduction paper work or was it your previous owner? If it was the previous owner you are not responsible to pay that. We had a similar issue. I basically told them you do not have my signature on any paper work, I'm not paying anything. The old owner was 100% responsible

Re: STAR question

There was another post regarding this scam. Thought the most recent post said not to pay. Government agency looking into the company. Try searching.

STAR question

Gina, I am glad you are doing something about this. I would call Newsday since it is Long Island based and go from there. This is BS and the company that did this to you and others should not get away with this!

Re: STAR question

Please be careful. I saw in the other thread you want to go to his address. This guy and the people he works with obviously have no conscience and could be dangerous. It's a bad idea to try to confront people like this.

Also, please disregard anyone saying you don't have to pay just because it's a known scam. That government website is just warning you not to fall for it. They aren't saying you don't have to pay if you already signed the contract. The company can take you to court for not paying. I would seek the advice of a real attorney.

I feel bad you fell for this scam. It's been around a long time and it's been on the news a bunch of times. This guy wouldn't be in business anymore if people would read contracts before signing them. Even if the contract looks like an official form, that is all the more reason to read all the fine print.

That sucks. Im sorry. I honestly don't get how this legal. If it wasn't for a posting awhile back and for fact that I threw a paper in a drawer to do later I would have shelled out money for paperwork I can get for free.

STAR question

Can someone explain this like I'm 5?

So when I had applied for star, I just filled out some forms and handed it over to the town. I got approved. That was it.

I never had to pay a fee.

I know you can try to have someone value your property to lower your taxes, and if they do, you owe them a cut of the winnings. I also know you can try to do this yourself.

So what's the scam that they do? I'm curious.

This "company" sends letters that are so ambiguous that you think they are legitimate forms from the town you live in; so people fill them out thinking they are doing the right thing, but it's actually a company handing over the forms to the town and they in turn collect a fee for doing so from the homeowner.

It's basically a company that files the papers for you and charges a "fee" of one year of STAR savings. The paperwork makes you feel like it's from the town itself, but its not. It is very deceiving. And you sign them that commits you to pay the "fee".
