People Magazine
I saw this on the news this morning and went to the people magazine home page. I intend to copy the names of all of our NY voting members of the house and senate on my Facebook page today and will encourage my friends to write a letter and to share the contact details. I heard a newscaster say this morning that surveys have shown that elected officials pay more attention to written letters than they do to phone calls or mass protests. I don't know if this is true or not but I intend to write and see what happens.
I want to know what their feelings are on gun control and the issue of gun licenses. I want to know what they feel about sentencing people who have a gun license and have firearms in their house but do not keep them locked up and they end up in the hands of someone who does harm - sometimes this is a child that does not know what they are doing and ends up taking another life completely by accident. I Want to know why despite all the mass murders in this country that we do nothing. It didn't touch our families so we move on. I am horrified that we have all become so numb to this. This past college shooting got top billing in the news department for the first day - maybe even half a day then it was downgraded and a hurricane became the lead story. How can this not paralyze us as a nation?
Please consider writing to your elected representatives and sharing this list on your social media pages.
Enough is enough.

Sentencing people who own guns but don't keep them locked up? Sorry. That's insane.

From how I read it, is that she wasn't saying that everybody who owns a gun and doesn't properly lock it up should be arrested. She said if that gun gets into the wrong hands and kills someone. It could be considered negligence and those actions caused someone's death.
Similiar to how parents can go to jail if their kid has a party and people drink. And said kids leave and go out and drive and kill someone or themselves. It's negligence that results in death.

Re: Call to Action - From People Magazine
Yes!! I believe that gun owners need to be responsible and if they have a licensed fire arm it should be locked up -what is insane about that? An 11 year old child picked a firearm up in his house last week and killed his playmate - this would not have happened it if was locked up. Why not lock it up? What is the problem with this? Why are we all acting like we live in the wild west? If you are a gun owner then responsibility should come along with this. If there are no consequences for your actions then no change will come. I think most legal gun owners would see nothing wrong with having their firearms locked up.

Well, for one thing, if you have a gun for home protection its unlikely that the intruder is going to wait a sec for you to get your gun out of the safe...
and second... sorry kids, Crazies and Criminals are going to get their guns regardless of how much everyone wants to regulate gun control.

Agreed.
The focus needs to be on increased mental health services.
Guns don't kill people....people kill people.
Criminals are not obtaining their guns legally.
Let's focus on securing our schools, increasing access to screening and mental health services.
Should their be screening to see if you're eligible for a gun -- yes, but I don't think this is the true issue.

Re: Call to Action - From People Magazine
"If people don't have guns then they cannot kill mass amounts of people". Right or wrong?
The oregon shooter had 14 guns in his possession. I can tell you as a parent I would not feel comfortable having my child and most certainly my child who had "issues" having access to this amount of firearms.

Did anyone SEE this story?????
*if* this gun was not locked up properly (I don't know the facts) The parents deserve to go jail.
I am not against guns, per-se, but how does ANYONE not lock a gun up properly???? (again, not saying these parents didn't, just in general).
Boy kills 8 year old neighbor because she wont let him see her new puppy.

Because the 11-year old that shot his 8-year old next door neighbor because she wouldn't show him her puppy should have been in the care of mental health professionals? No, his FATHER left his shotgun out. Now the child is going to be charged with MURDER. Will his father be charged? No. How does that make sense??

I completely agree. I'm so sick of hearing "people kill people", we have a mental health problem (we do), 2nd amendment, etc. Those are all a distraction to the issue. Deal with the gun issue.
The facts are facts. Statistics have proven that more guns=more gun deaths.
Taking them all away won't work either (although it did work in Australia), but something needs to be done.

It DOESN"T make sense but none of this makes sense. Everyone is so caught up on their "rights" that they cannot see straight.
Its complete BS that I have to drop my kids off at school every day wondering if that is the last I will see of them and I think this EVERY SINGLE FRICKIN day since newtown CT and it pisses me off that we are still here...still doing nothing but you know what maybe one day your school will be the school that is hit up by this "recluse, strange, no one knew him" CHILD or young adult with his massive collection of firearms and maybe when your child is murdered at the age of 6 whilst sitting at their school desk then maybe just maybe you will start to see sense and realize that change needs to happen and NOW.
This incenses me

This conversation makes my blood boil, and I never interject into political conversations on these boards.
Gun owners need to be responsible-- period!
I grew up in a home with guns. My father was on the job. He made sure there was never any curiosity when it came to them.
He would answer any questions we had. He would let us hold them. He taught us gun safety. We knew it was locked up and we were never to touch it.
Perfect example of a responsible gun owner.

Yes, true. But if there are fewer guns and more regulations, there will be fewer mass shootings.
Take a look at statistics:
In Australia there was a mass shooting in Tasmania. The government banned guns. Gun violence went down considerably.
Switzerland had a few mass shootings. Switzerland is a country with a lot of guns because of the compulsory military service. They tightened regulations up. After the military it is not so easy to keep your gun.
There are a few Finnish statistics, but I don't know them off hand.
But, no, we are so concerned about our own rights. There have been 250+ mass shootings this year. That's crazy.

Unfortunately there are already too many guns out there, so I think it would be too little, too late. For example, we own 6 firearms. What would the gov't do? Confiscate some of them? I don't think so.
ETA - And also, do I think an 8 year old who thinks the appropriate reaction to not being able to see a puppy is to kill the puppy owner is mentally ill? Yes, I do.

Firearms should be locked in a gun safe and ammunition in a separate locked up secure gun safe. What's so difficult about this?

Can I ask you "penny4yourthoughts" do you keep your firearms locked up? Do you have children in your home that would have easy access to any of your 6 firearms? You dont have to answer but I am curious. Thanks.

I HATE this argument, b/c WTF is the point of HAVING a gun for home protection? "Hey wait armed intruder... I just have to go over here and retrieve my gun from the safe and then load it... just give me 3 minutes."
So silly.

And I have seen plenty of responsible gun owners that completely agree with you--they are not the problem. If you aren't responsible enough to lock them up and keep them out of your 11-year old's hands, you aren't responsible enough to have one.
The argument that you can't get it out fast enough if you have an intruder is ridiculous. So it's better to leave it out in the open and hope that your kids won't get curious and you'll get to it faster than the intruder will? Come on.

Happy to answer.
We don't have children yet. When we do, we will keep them secure of course, especially when we are not at home, but I'm not going to tell you that overnight my DH won't have a loaded handgun in his nightstand. Thats the whole point of HAVING them for home protection.

I disagree. I think the 8 year old lived in a home that showed no respect or fear for firearms. I think this his parents didn't instill the importance of never touching the firearm and also their due diligence in keeping the firearm locked up. We are not talking a baseball bat here - we are talking something that with one pull of a trigger can take a life and did. This child was acting impulsively - he was mad and he used a gun that should never have been in his hands. His parents should be sentenced for negligence.

I think that even if the 8 year old took a baseball bat to his neighbor's head over such a stupid issue it would demonstrate mental illness. Sounds like a bit of a sociopath in the works.

Re: Call to Action - From People Magazine
With no disrespect but you dont have kids so you dont understand that kids have tempers like adults do...kids are spontaneous and act out in an instance...I have seen kids beat the crap out of each other at this age - especially boys as they are physical - they are not mentally ill...they are kids with frustrations and sometimes belt punch and kick out of frustration - they should NEVER have the power to pull a trigger. Never. And your thoughts on this might change once you become a parent. Would you be comfortable sending your child to a house of a friend for a playdate if you knew there was an unlocked firearm in the house that a child could access? I guarantee you 100% your thoughts will change on this once you become a parent.
