What steps do we need to take for an extension for home in Melville?

We bought a home for my parents in Melville last year. We would like to add a bathroom and bedroom to the 1st floor/basement. The house is a split level house and doesn't really have a basement because the main level is up 4 steps from the driveway.

DH and I own the house. It is under our name and we would like to get a contractor to do this the proper way.

Should we find a contractor first?
Will the contractor get the permit?

You will need permits, plans and contractor.

You can go a few different ways. Hire your own designer to do the drawings, hire a contractor who will get someone to do the drawings and file etc.

While each town building dept is slightly different the general process is the same no matter what

Your best (most honest) bet is to hire an architect to draw up your plans - and then take those plans to shop around for your contractor (who will then handle all of the permits, etc)
This way each contractor is giving you an estimate based on the SAME plans , and no one is in anyone's pocket
