Home extension
Have any of you or know someone that ever added an extension to their home? We are looking to do this, hopefully in the near future (possibly next year). We definately cannot start a family in our house the way it is now; it's just not big enough. How much does something like this ususally go for? I know it really depends on the size of the extension, but if I was to add a 2 level extension (having 2 floors), does anyone know of a ballpark figure? I want to know if it is even worth it to do this or if I would have to move altogether. Any help would be appreciated! TIA

Re: Home extension
Kristin, Danielle and I are doing this right now. Depending on what you are looking to spend, be prepared to spend at least $100k. Scott

Thanks thats what I figured. I should have added that We are looking to only have the foundation and frame done. All other work (I.e. electric, heating, air conditioning, putting up walls, insulation, plumbing, etc.) we know people, so we can do a lot of this work ourselves..would that save us a lot? enough to make it worth it, rather than move?

We had a two story addition plus basement added to the side of our house. We had the entire thing contracted out, and it still made sense financially. Between taxes, REA fees, moving company, etc, it would have cost us about $50k just to move. That's not counting the cost of the bigger house, just to physically get up and go to a different address. We like our neighborhood, our neighbors, school district, etc.
Doing a lot of the work yourself will save a ton of $$ (assuming you have the time and energy to do it.... which is why I hired someone to do our house... )
$100k sounds about right for the foundation and shell.

Re: Home extension
I do recommend that you if you are planning to do 2 levels, do them both at the same time. If not, it will end up costing more.
