1st birthday gift
How much do you spend for a 1st birthday? My husband's cousin is having her child's 1st birthday. At the baptism I gave them a nice sized check but it was at a place and both my DH and I attended. We have only seen the child 1 other time since then and this party is at the house and DH can't come due to work.

1st birthday gift
I don't think matters how much or little you spend on a gift, no one will really know how much you spent. I don't believe in spending a set amount on any age. For a one year old they will play with the gift a few times and move on, imo if you spent $5 who is going to know. To answer your question a $10-15 dollar gift would be just fine IMO. I know everyone else will say $50-100...
I would buy a book or two.

Give what you are comfortable with. I would probably give a gift in the $30-$50 range, I would probably give $50 if cash.

We just had dds about 2 months ago, and the majority of gifts were in the 20-50 range, with a few who spent more

That's about the average I spend as well. Actually for big birthdays , such as this, I sometimes go over. But $50 is the norm in my circle

Yes, really. The OP asked what WE would gift and that's what I would. Obviously everyone will have different opinions. My son has SO many toys AND books already - any new toy I get him now he plays with for 5 minutes and that's it. At least with $ she can put it into his savings or college fund. Again, it's just my opinion.

Re: 1st birthday gift
I don't know, I don't like the idea of giving money for a baby's birthday. I'd probably get an outfit and small toy and send it along with someone who is attending if possible.

in all honesty I really don't care what people give its each persons choice, I just think its crazy for a 1 yr old. I think in general on this site the way people talk about tipping and gift giving is crazy.
I think for a child under a certain ago no need to spend or give 50 +. What does a child have to look forward to if they are given these amounts at an early age. Just my thought. Kid get some much and they use very little of it.
No one has to or will on this agree with me and that's ok :)

Re: 1st birthday gift
For my DD 1st birthday. We got mostly cash and gift cards. I also give cash at the 1st bday. We took the money and put it into her own savings account. We also have a CD with money for her also. Any holiday or birthday gift they get that is cash we deposit it. Both my girls have a nice savings building already. :) They will receive the money after the graduate high school.

Baptisms are generally for children under 1 year old and, at least in my circles, cash gifts of 50+ is very typical. Its more about the occasion than age of the child. Many people view 1st birthdays as a special/ milestone birthday thus choose to give larger/more expensive gifts for the 1st birthday.
That being said, we had most people give us gifts in the 200- 250 dollar range for our child's baptism but a couple of people who gave us 25 dollars. It all depends on your cultures and circles that you travel in.
To the OP- we did pretty big 1st bday partys for our kids and with the exception of very close family the largest gift we got was about $50- so hat would be a generous gift, if you are not that close and recently gave a generous christening gift, I say you can get a gift in the 20-30 range. I love the idea of a personalized book or 1st bday frame (check out personalizationmall.com). Or a gift card for $25 for barnes and noble with a small book.

I agree. I view 1 as a big birthday, whereas 2,3 etc may not be as much depending on relationship

1st birthday gift
I didn't mean to start a war over the price of gifts. For me it is hard because this isn't a person I am close to or see all the time. DH saw her all the time growing up but as a adults we only see on holidays or special occasions. Thanks for all those who answered. I think I am going get a board book and then stick 40 in a card.

If it's just you and at the house, then between $40 and $50.
