Kindergarten Lunch and Snack Ideas for a Picky Eater

Any ideas I may not be thinking of?
She would eat sun butter sandwiches every day if I let her.
Won't eat cheese and is so/so on cold cuts.

Kindergarten Lunch and Snack Ideas for a Picky Eater

I bought a Thermos to send DS with some "hot" foods some days (mac and cheese and nuggets mainly).

Re: Kindergarten Lunch and Snack Ideas for a Picky Eater

My DD is a picky eater too. I'm going to start with fruit, a cheese stick and a yogurt squeezie since that's her staple lunch. LOL. I'm hoping when she sees other kids eating sandwiches and stuff she'll get more adventurous. I may try nutela sandwiches and see how it goes. I bought her Uncrustable sandwiches but she's not sold on them yet. Maybe try those though. They have a few different types.

I plan on packing DS cold cuts and cheese sticks (his staple lunch), yogurt, peanut butter and jelly or Nutella. For hot foods I will probably do mac n cheese, chicken nuggets, soup, and pasta with butter. He will always have fruit and/or carrots or cucumbers and a small dessert.

Re: Kindergarten Lunch and Snack Ideas for a Picky Eater

My son lived on PB&J or Nutella sandwiches -
I also packed him yogurt, apple slices and PB - once in awhile I'd do Chicken Nuggets in the thermos. He isn't a big cheese stick/cheese sandwich/or coldcut eater.
Banannas and apples are usually the fruit that actually gets eaten and doesn't come back home in the lunchbox so I go with those.

If the school lunch was something he liked I let him buy, and he was allowed a bagel once a week.

it's hard b/c you WANT to think that if you pack them something healthy and that's their only option they will eat it - but, at least w/ my kid, it didn't work that way Chat Icon

Its hard because our school requests no peanut or tree nuts so that eliminates a staple pbj.

We do cream cheese and jelly on ritz crackers or mini bagel, sometimes cold cuts

love this- lol

I'm on the same boat though- my little guy is starting kindergarten and he's become so picky

Maybe warmed pasta , chicken nuggets, sometimes soup in a thermos
Pbj , cheese sandwiches, mini bagels , rolled up cold cuts and cheese

Common theme here is some sort of cheese item and carbs lol

Re: Kindergarten Lunch and Snack Ideas for a Picky Eater

Can someone explain how to do the hot foods in the thermos? It would be great if I could do Mac n cheese or soup for my DS. I've never had to do lunch for my kids at school before, but 1st grade is full day and I'm afraid he's going to starve, bc he only eats pbj sandwich lol

They sell thermos that are short and wide- perfect for eating right out of.
I'd just put it in there in the AM, hot, and send them with a plastic spoon or fork.

Thank you! I had no idea it would stay warm. I figured it was like my coffee mug and would be cold in an hour, so I had to do something weird to keep it warm lol. Thanks, I'm going to give it a try!

I would give her what she likes even if it's the same thing everyday to start.

According to my almost 5 year old the food is NOT hot when eats it a few hours later.

I have tried to send in hot food because my picky eater won't eat food if it isn't piping hot Chat Icon , so I bought a thermos to send it in.

The first time, I boiled hot water and put it inside of the thermos to heat the inside up (I read this trick somewhere). Let it stay in there with the cover on for about 15 minutes while I finished getting ready. Then I put the reheated pasta (I heated it on the stove top because I again read the microwave will not get it to the ideal temp to stay hot long enough) and covered it up nicey nice. I was excited that this was going to be making his lunches so much easier since he won't eat anything besides cream cheese or hummus.

It came home half eaten - I asked what happened and he said it wasn't hot. Chat Icon

I've tried a few other times, but from what he tells me the food isn't hot - its cold. Again, my DS likes his food piping, so this could be the reason it is not working for us. I really wish he would accept this, because I hate making lunches for him...lol

Agreed.

Also, at my DC's school if they want hot lunch but don't have $ they will not turn them away. My DC won't do it, but I found this reassuring when he went to K because he wouldn't be hungry

Yeah, my DS says it's not hot either. I stopped giving him hot stuff towards the end of the year because of this.

He mostly does sandwiches (bologna, turkey, or salami).

Ive sent the thermos with soup and beef stew and my son said its always still hot. I heat it to the point of boiling before I put it in.

Re: Kindergarten Lunch and Snack Ideas for a Picky Eater

I am assuming you put ice packs in with the lunch box to keep the sandwiches cool until lunch?
