UPDATE BELOW *** Possible new job
I actually had an interview this morning. I saw a job opening and sent my resume. It's 10 minutes from my house , bigger practice, off-shoot to the specialty I'm dealing with now, lots of room for growth. Similar salary, similar vacation, but 401K which I don't have now.... I'm fairly certain I got the job, they asked if I wanted to give notice, but there was no firm offer, so I said I would wait until we discussed further - they suggested I come in for a half our or hour one day to observe the system a little (which makes sense). I liked the doctor, he was very friendly, and I like the philosophy he has. The salary isn't amazing, again, it really wouldn't be an increase from what I am making now, but the practice is growing, and if I can make sure more $$ comes in, then I can definitely negotiate a higher rate. Plus, it's 10 minutes away from my house, good hours (8-5 or 9-6 with an hour lunch). It would also be an expansion for me, I'd definitely be learning some new things, which would be great. They also reiterated a few times about them being able to be flexible since I am a mom of a young infant, and how "they've been there", so they understand. I described how DH and I handled the 1 day so far that DS was sick and had to stay home from school, and it was acknowledged as a good and easy way to work it out. I've been with my practice a few years, and I really like the doctor, but as I've said here, there are things that I just don't like, things that have made me very frustrated. I have to think about this... Just posting to get it out there.

Get the new place to offer you more $ and go to your current boss and tell them I'm being offered more elsewhere with flexibility. Only do that if and when you are prepared for your current employer to decline. GET MORE MONEY NOW! You are valuable wherever you go and deserve more than what you're getting. Don't let these places low ball you.

Be very careful if you try something like this...I did this and my old job gave me the raise I wanted - matched my offer. I really liked the job so I stayed. As soon as they found my replacement and trained the person, I was let go...and I thought I had a great relationship with the owner. It came down to he didn't want to pay and because he was in a lurch he paid me more while he had to and then went with someone cheaper...didn't matter how good a worker I was or how good our relationship was - totally sucked. I am in a much bigger company now and happier - but I wanted to throw this out there because I don't want you to get burned like I did. The original poster said to do this only if you are prepared to be declined. Good advice and I would add only if you don't want to stay. Good luck!!

Yeah, I wouldn't do this. There's also a work/life balance that this new opportunity could offer. I've seen this tactic NOT work (and I've seen it work) but it's not something I would be willing to wager.

That's awesome, I would do it for the commute alone! I am on maternity leave and went yesterday to visit my job, to show my coworkers the baby and I forgot how much my commute sucks lol
