Vacuum sealed meat

Is this still good?

I bought some vacuum sealed steak a few weeks ago. It's not a DIY vacuum seal job; it was done at the manufacturing plant. The use-by date says it can stay in the Fridge until August 22nd. I put it in the freezer last week and then defrosted it on Monday. I don't feel like cooking it tonight, and I probably won't get around to cooking it until at least Sunday or Monday.

Can I put it back in the freezer? Can it stay in my fridge until Sunday / Monday despite being frozen beforehand?

I wouldn't put it back in the freezer but I think in the fridge it will be fine.

I wouldn't cook it that late - once it's been defrosted I give it 24 hours or the garbage.

Re: Vacuum sealed meat

I'd try to cook it by Friday the latest. I mean it's defrosted by now so I wouldn't try to refreeze it, but I don't know that I'd feel comfortable cooking it after it being thawed for a full week. Vacuum sealed or not.

That's what's throwing me off. The meat has not been exposed to air.

I'm not sure if I can cook it by Friday. I have a package of chicken thighs that is 90% frozen that should be defrosted for my Friday meal.

Maybe I'll grill up the steak tomorrow and then use it for steak sandwiches for the weekend. That should work, right?

I've had factory sealed meat stay fresh a week in the fridge. If it started changing color then I would discard it. Factory sealed stays fresh longer then just plastic wrapped meats at the grocery store. I guess I am just in the minority but as long as it doesn't start changing color I would use it.

I agree and will add that I usually go by smell.
You can tell right away if meat has turned just by the smell

Well, they smelled perfectly fine when I opened them. I put them in a marinade and will cook them up tomorrow. DH will eat it for dinner as I am out with colleagues tomorrow. I'll see if he gets sick Chat Icon and then eat steak sandwiches / salads (BTW, thanks for the idea, Msissy!)

I would hold onto it until you are able to cook it. When you are ready to cook and open the package if there is an unusual smell or color or anything that seems off, then I would toss it. But until then don't toss it if you haven't opened it.

That's what I was thinking- cook it up and save it for salads and sandwiches and stuff.

Trust me you will not want to use that meat
Professionally vacuum sealed included

We had once take n meat out of the freezer - professionally vacuum sealed too-and left in in fridge for 4 days - when I tell you it stunk- and I spoke to my cousin who is a chef she said hell no

My dad who is just a really good cook- laughed at me.

It smelled fine. It's marinating now and will be cooked tonight.

For the future, if you defrost in the fridge, you can refreeze.
