Your opinion

Oh please I'm sorry it's a nail salon ! Not a fancy elite spa or the opera! Give me a break.
I agree kids that don't know how to behave shouldn't be at a fancy restaurant or an adult movie (well a kid shouldn't be at an adult movie regardless!).
I've taken both my kids to the nail salon and hair salon many times. Listen I'm not going to bother my mom to watch my kids so I can go get my nails done. To me that's more selfish. I don't use sitters.
And to the person that is going to say well then don't go- well gives a break. Just bc I have kids doesn't mean I can get a manicure once in awhile. And it isn't reality to think a mom will always have a sitter readily available and my DH works long hours and I work weekends so for me- I choose to take my kids with me when I want a manicure.
I don't see it as the end of the world. And I plan accordingly. I bring a bottle or a snack etc.

My DD was always PERFECTLY behaved. To this day. My DS isn't as easy but please I don't let him be disruptive and most of the time it's more stressful for ME than anyone in the salon bc I keep him busy the whole time. So it isn't a "me me me" thing!

ETA- let me clarify- I bring a "bottle" for my 1 year old. Not a bottle of booze to get me thru the experience before I get jumped on! Chat Icon

That is why the nail salon has turned into a place where kids are around instead of a place where moms can go for a break.
There are many things I always brought my kids with me to and then there were things I sacrificed without because I had younger kids.
It is a nail salon, you can do your own nails at home, not something vital to living. lol.

Your opinion

My boys, 4 & 2, have never been with me. To be honest, I usually go with a girlfriend or my SIL and we use it as our catch up time. I consider my kids pretty well behaved but they would be bored out of their minds, and I would prefer to not give them my phone or ipad. But that is my preference, if someone else wants to bring their kid, as long as they are well behaved, more power to ya.

I get what you are saying but it's a nail salon! Not anything more. Nails! and I do my own as well but once in awhile I want a manicure. And just bc I have kids doesn't mean I can't take them and go. Would I take them to a day spa- absolutely not, but a strip mall nail place for 30 min- not the end of the world. But if course everyone has a different opinion. Believe me- I would LOVE my trip to the nail salon to be "me time" but I don't have THAT luxury so let me at least have the "non vital" luxury of getting a professional manicure once in while Chat Icon
And I promise it's more stressful for me than anyone else in there. That I can promise.

Some people don't know the definition of well behaved though and like the woman who had her kids at the nail salon that day, running around while she was ignoring them, or the parents who brought a crying baby into a 9pm movie one time, or the woman on my most recent plane ride that made her kid say mom 12 times before answered him, some people are clueless what well behaved means.

I agree with the OP that there are just some places that are designed not to bring kids. You make sacrifices when you have kids. One of them, IMO is going to a nice restaurant or nail salon or movies when your children are not small infants or older and know how to behave.

A-to-the-MEN.

I'm blown away by what some of my mom friends consider 'well-behaved.' Maybe I'm just overly strict...?

If I need to get nails done and don't have someone to watch my kid - I don't go. I would hate for my kid to be the one that disrupts someone's relaxation time. I know how precious a mom's time is and I wouldn't want my kid to potentially spoil that.

ETA: You know what? We live in such a 'me, me, me' society that people don't think twice about other people. I'm not surprised by the responses on here.

ITA with all of this.

We've taken my now 16m old out to restaurants since she was a newborn. Anytime she starts to fuss or get loud, we remove her until she calms down. DH and I both said before we had kids that we don't want to be the ones whose kids run around and kick and scream and ruin other people's meals. We also are both against using technology to keep our kids behaved. It's getting harder to take her out since she's getting older, so we don't. If we want to go to a movie or to a nice restaurant, we find someone to watch her. If it's not possible for anyone to watch her, we don't go. It's as simple as that.

ETA: if I wanted to have my nails done where a kid is running around and being disruptive, I'd do them at home.

Yep and more and more when you go out, parents do not take kids out of restaurants or church or the library or anyplace that distrupt others.
We didn't go out or on vacation for so many years as it was hard and I don't think others should have to deal with others children when parents think they should. Too many parents are way too lax now and think that everyone else should just deal with it.

i have a 4 yo and a 2 yo and i would NEVER bring them to a nail salon. ever. it would just not be relaxing for me or for anyone else in there. i agree with you, OP. some places like nail salons are for a little me time, and i appreciate having somewhere to go where i won't have to see or hear kids for an hour.

I would love to know where all these relaxing nail salons are. The ones that people say they use as "me" time and kids shouldn't go. I don't go often (it's just gross to me, a fungus fest in my head) but when I have gone, there's always two women yapping to one another, some princess on her cell, the ladies who do the nails are talking and laughing to one another. It's hardly ever what I would call relaxing.

Ps I'm off to go get my eye brows done with my 2 kids in tow. They may or may not have tech devices with them and the place has the word "spa" in it. Wish me luck! I'm doing the world a service so they don't have to deal with my bushy brows. Lol

Re: Your opinion

I'm sorry but this thread is completely ridiculous to me. First I want to point out that manis and pedis at your local nail salon are no longer luxuries. They are things we woman do these days to look presentable and fit in this world. Sad, yes, but, for me in my life it's the truth so I am going to say it. Could I do my own toes? Yes. but they would look like a gross mess.

Also, the local nail salons shouldn't be viewed by anyone as a place to relax. They are always bustling with teens and older people loudly chatting it up and are factories of one rushed mani after another. I could go on and on. IF you were talking about a spa where a mani costs $14 and up that would be a totally different story. Yes, in that case, I would expect that no one would bring their young children there but, that is not what we are talking about here.

So now, all that said, not everyone has the luxury of having a husband or family around to watch their kids and not everyone is comfortable leaving their kids with strangers. If I had somewhere to go where I needed a mani and pedi I would absolutely bring my kids along and see people do it ALL.THE.TIME. I don't judge you for leaving your kid with a stranger to go get a mani - don't judge me for taking my kid with me. If you want to relax - go somewhere that is designed to be an adult only spa haven.

ETA: I wanted add that I never brought my kids to a nail salon except when my DD was old enough to get one with me (which I do more than I should so that I can get my nails done at all). So this response isn't coming from defensiveness just what I observe in reality.

I actually get them for the same reason you posted because it would be sloppy mess if I did it. It's more maintenance for me.

Geez..... I cannot believe how people consider a 30 minute manicure some sort of luxury that I can only "indulge" in if I have secured a baby sitter for.
Absolutely absurd.

Wow so you would forget a vacation during the kiddie years bc you think your kids would be bothersome. that I don't agree with one bit either.
Let's face it I wouldn't take my young children to an adult only resort Chat Icon but the majority of places are kid friendly! I'm sure you could find ONE place that would be kid friendly for a vacation (besides Disney world of course).
When I was a kid we vacationed all the time. Sometimes big vacations sometimes small. But we always had fun, we also learned how to behave and interact.

If I am out , whether vacation, a plane, nail salon, or stop n shop- if I see a kid acting up I don't judge that parent for taking them.... I say thank god at THAT moment in time it's not my child acting up LOL bc we all know we have been there at some time or another.
I think we are all too quick to judge each other.

I don't really care. I have a friend who brings her kids with them. I do not bring my kids with me ever. I either go when DH is home to watch are kids, my mom is around to watch them or during my lunch hour at work. 95% of the time I go when my DH is home to watch them. I also am the parernt who refuses to take my kids food shopping or to any other store. It's a very rare occasion when I do bring them.

I took DD AT 4.5 for the first time to get her nails done. I did not get my done I just let her get her nails done so I can be sure to watch her and she behaves.

I will have to agree with other posters who say kids don't belong in adult movies at 10pm at night. I never understood this get a babysitter or wait till the movie comes out on DVD.

ETA: If a child is old enough to behave and not invariably get bored and loud/wild, then there's no problem. This thread was about little kids incapable of being quiet/patient for very long.

If you bring a small baby or toddler to a salon and they cry or fuss loudly, there's not even a lot you can do in that moment--mid-appointment--is there? So everyone is stuck....and the one I feel worst for is the poor child.

How can it be me me me behavior to expect people to respect the atmosphere that has already been established in a fine restaurant or theater? And why do people feel entitled to inflict their disruptive kids on others just because they don't want to forego or pay for a sitter. That's me me me.

And I love kids. Especially my own. Too much to put them through an inappropriate movie or meal where they will wail or run wild.

It's been a loooong time since i had a mani/pedi. I was 37w pregnant with DD1 and had a groupon for a spa pedi at a regular salon. I went at around 1pm on a Saturday and it was by far the most relaxing experience of my life lol. Not a spa, just a regular old salon. It was glorious. And quiet.

I wish they were still open because I plan on getting a spa pedi when I'm 37w this time around (5 more weeks to go!) and I hope it's just as relaxing and quiet!

Your opinion

I am not a parent yet so I'm not sure how I will do it but I think if my future kid is running around and bothering others, I'd probably cut my services short.

Side story: I was recently waiting for a nail technician at my salon to finish what was probably a 5-year old girl and while she was sitting at the dryer, the girl started crying because she decided she didn't want pink nails anymore, she wanted purple. The mother told the technician and they took off the color and started from scratch. Mind you, there were two women (one being me) waiting for someone to start on them when this happened. Instead of telling her that she chose color and she needed to stick with it, the mother insisted on having the nails changed. I ended up getting taken by someone else but the other person walked out.

They ARE still luxuries to many people, including myself who has a budget. Why should I lose out because others feel entitled to this all the time? I never really have seen that many kids at nail salons though. Maybe because the moms feel the same way I do is that we are looking for a relaxing time off from the kids and hubby lol.

Geez..... I cannot believe how people consider a 30 minute manicure some sort of luxury that I can only "indulge" in if I have secured a baby sitter for.
Absolutely absurd.

Well some of us do. Whenever I have gone, my kids were either in school, camp or my dh watched them.
