Re: How much food..updated

I don't think that is enough. I would do a full tray of chicken nuggets and a full try of fries. Look on line at party menus to see how much food they estimate for fifty adults. Are the kids mostly 1 year olds or are they older?

How much food..updated

I called the place I was going to get some of the food from, and he suggested 2 six foot heroes, a tray of salad, and three trays of food (2 pastas and one meat).

Eta:

7 kids are under 4
13 range from 5-13

12 feet of heroes sounds like way too much. And of course the place wants to sell more food - but how much leftovers do you want? They say a full tray feeds like 15 people - it's really like 30.

I don't want any leftovers haha. Dh and I don't really eat a ton of this type of food.

I'm so confused haha. I don't want to waste a ton of food, but I don't want to run out. Yet here people are saying so much more than what the restaurant said..

It depends on how people eat, but they don't fill the trays as much as they used to. You usually get a layer and a half if you are lucky. It's never filled to the top anymore like it used to be. I really don't think a tray that says it feeds 15 will feed 30, but that's just my opinion.

We had a party recently with 60 people (a bunch of young kids , a few older kids and adults). We had 2 six foot heroes (one Italian and one American),2 large trays of sausage and peppers , 3 large trays of chicken parm, two 1/2 trays of meatballs, and a large tray of penne ala vodka. We also had a sheetcake and cookies. I expected and wanted leftovers so I ordered extra, plus I was afraid of running low on food, ( my biggest fear). But I have to tell you that there were not as many leftovers as you would have expected from so much food.I think that the place you called sounds about accurate.

I would say 2 6 foot heros. 1 tray of penne ala vodka, maybe a baked ziti tray, 1 tray of some sort of chicken for adults, 1 tray of chicken nuggets/fingers for kids and skip the fries. However,... I am notorious for not wanting to run out of food and somehow never wind up with that much left over!

I work in catering and when using my company to cater my own events, we get a lot more per person per tray. I guess it's different than a pizzeria or deli. But you're right that the trays just aren't filled like they used to be (which is also why I think a lot of those places are a rip off for what you get).

Get some containers from the dollar store & give people leftovers to take home. You don't have to make take out containers for 40 people, but toward the end, who ever is left, probably your close family anyway, you can always get rid of the left overs that way.

Re: How much food..updated

Even if you don't want left overs, I would plan to have too much rather than not enough! Thats just embarassing, and rude. I would not add another hero, and add another tray of food. We had 40 ppl and had more trays than that 2 heros AND 5 pizzas and the only thing we had left was some hero 1/2 a pizza and 1/2 a tray of pasta left. We had 4 full trays (2 pasta 2 other)

Dds first bday is coming up, and we're having it at our house.

It seems as if we'll have about 20 kids (between 1-13), and 40 adults.

would this be better?

1 six foot hero
1 tray penne vodka
1 tray lasagna
1 tray green salad
1 tray roasted veggies
1 tray sausage and peppers
1 tray chicken fingers
1/2 tray fries

I plan on making everything except the hero/sausage peppers, and I'm picking the chicken and fries up from Costco..

So it would be 6 1/2 trays and a 6 foot hero. There will also be desserts..

Honestly, it all depends on how the people you're inviting eat. Do you have a lot of appetizers they will be snacking on before the food goes out? That will help. If not, you need to have enough for the big eaters to get seconds.

What I do is make more of the cheaper stuff.
Scratch the Lasagna and go with Baked Ziti. Easier and Cheaper. I Make it in 1/2 trays. Put 2 out. If it goes fast, replace with one. You can always freeze the rest for another time. It wont go to waste. You can even add Ground Beef in there for another "Meat" Dish.

Salad doesn't count as food lol It's a nice size, but I wouldn't count it into the dinner

6 foot hero won't be enough for everyone. Will everyone take a piece? no. But what about the 20th guy on the line for food and he goes to grab some sandwich and its gone? I'd either do 2 6ft heros OR scratch it all together for another tray of food. You can do an eggplant parm, or chicken francese, etc. See where i'm going with this?

You can also add ellios pizzas cut into strips for the kids too. They like that a lot and its cheap.

Better to have too much food then not enough. But like i said in the beginning... it all depends on your crowd. My people can EAT.

Re: How much food..updated

I make a ton of carb sides when I'm having a party.

This helps a lot and they are cheap....pasta salad, cous cous, potato salad....also if family offer to bring something, have them make a food dish.

My ILs always make a big tray of wings to set out as an appetizer and someone will make guac and some other dip. Cheese and crackers are inexpensive too if you just go to Target or buy on sale your basic cheddar and Swiss.

lol I guess my family and friends are just huge eaters because we order what you did for about 20ish people and have almost nothing left. Glad it worked out for you. Too much food is always better than not enough!
