I think a Go Fund Me is ok for people I personally know that need help. For example, someone I know going through chemo, tons of doctor's appointments, taking supplements that are not covered by insurance. That adds up & I know it's legitimate.
I'm not giving money to someone for their kid's college, their pet's food or surgery, their IF treatments, towards their wedding & whatever else.
Not only do I not have the extra money (because I just paid for my dog's surgery co-pays & I had pet insurance) but because I think half of this crap is a scam or something that someone should have been responsible enough to plan ahead.

where was she the past 18 yrs ..did she just wake up and be like "oh shit my kid has to go to college."
I dont mind go fund mes for me medical help or some sort of traumatic family emergency. but college, vacations, dream houses, no effing way.

I dont mind go fund mes for me medical help or some sort of traumatic family emergency. but college, vacations, dream houses, no effing way.
Its not even college. Its a special music program in the city. The kid is still in HS. He can get a perfectly good education and get involved in all the free music programs in the district. But she wants him to go to the one in the city and he would be so devastated if he couldn't go.
That is life IMO. I wanted to study abroad in college and my parents couldn't afford the extra expense so I didn't get to do it. We all had disappointment and we turned out fine.

This will sound obnoxious, but who are these friends that are asking for $$ to fund a boob job or a vacation? I would probably just delete someone like that.
I have given a few times, and mostly for families with major medical needs. In those cases, the person benefitting didn't even set up the page, a friend or family member did.

No friends of mine! But I've seen GFM pages for those things either in groups or elsewhere on the Internet.

i have one set up for a student of mine and we raised a lot of money for her family! she is confined to a wheelchair and there is no assistance for them to buy a handicapped van. people really came together.. donations were from $10 and up and we raised over 20K. i think if you know it's legit and want to help, then it's great.
I gave. Were they able to get the van? I hope so.

As for funerals, in my family so many relatives have no savings, yet when one dies, their kids, who have no money, want a huge funeral and expect the rest of the family to pay for it. Worse, even when we do pay for it, I have caught them telling people that we are too cheap to pay for the funeral. 
After the last one, which cost the rest of us $12,000, plus a donated plot worth $4,000, and catering for a lovely gathering afterwards, I put my foot down and announced that I no longer will help to fund funerals. I will donate towards a cremation. A collective sigh of relief went up from those who are always asked to contribute and we intend to stick to our guns.
If people won't buy insurance, and won't save, I see no reason that the rest of us have to pitch in our money.
