Can we discuss "Go fund me"

OK I know I'm going to sound like an evil ***** but I'm totally convinced someone is lying about her breast cancer diagnosis just for sympathy to make money.

Every month it's something.

Today actually had the balls to post if every FB friend gave $5 she'd reach her goal of $15k.

I know people use this site for good, and I have given, but people like this....I just can't....and people are giving too!!!

I totally get what you mean. It always seems like its never enough. I have a family member that is just like this. At somepoint, enough is enough.

I also feel that most people, even if they are in tough times aren't coming out like this to basically tell people to give them money.

This is what makes me even more skeptical.

In the past when I've suggested resources to her, she didn't respond or deleted the comment ;).

Go fund me accounts annoy me to no end. They started out as a good thing to help people in need. Now everyone feels entitled and it's pathetic. This week alone I had one to help fund someone's college, another to support a world trip before they get married and another to help pay for a lawyer for their kids DWI hearing. It's ridiculous.

A world trip? Must be nice! Pay for your own world trip!

Their kid's DWI hearing? The kid should be paying for it!

People have NO pride anymore. It is a shame that something started for good has turned into a pity party.
No one plans anything anymore and they expect everyone else to pay their way.

So any people misuse that site. I've seen some real jackasses In the last year or so. One started a page requesting donations to meet her renters insurance deductible, another created one for first/last month deposit on an apartment, another one begging for money simply because she doesn't work (and is a pill head), it's sickening. How is that anyone's fault you don't have a few hundred dollars for your deductible. It's called save your money!!!
In other news, I'm creating a go fund me page to see if I can get my student loans paid off.

I guess I'm lucky, because I have really seen only very few of these requests - and none of them have been for selfish reasons. I would be really pi$$ed off if I saw this kind of thing. Does anyone call these people out on their ridiculous requests? I know I'd want to post some kind of snarky response, but I guess in reality I'd probably never do it

Unless its a serious cause and I have a way to prove the legitimacy of the need I will not donate to them. My mom donated to some woman in a FB group she is on who was crying about her dog dying and how it needed surgery to live. Mom felt bad... sent $50! Two weeks later the creep was posting pics of herself in Paris on vacation! Awful and shameless!

I knew someone who I thought was lying... turned out she really had cancer. I felt really bad... But she beat it, it was not a good diagnosis, stage 4, and she beat it.

Re: Can we discuss "Go fund me"

I had someone on my FB asking for money to pay bills because this person "couldn't work due to a disability". Listen, unless you are a quadriplegic and cant talk/type/answer phones, which clearly she could because she was able to create the go fund me, go get a damn job. Theres no reason she couldn't find an office somewhere to be a secretary or something. Its so annoying. And she would share it every so often, reminding everyone of her eviction date if she didnt meet the goal. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd love to but I feel like that would welcome unnecessary drama into my life.

It's a shame though because I think this site is turning into a subsidy for those who made poor choices in their life and have discovered there are others out there willing enough to finance them.

This is definitely the case with the person in my OP.

Maybe she does have cancer, but she also has 4 kids, all different fathers, poor relationship with family, dead end jobs, etc.

Thats great that she beat Stage 4! My hairdresser was diagnosed w/ Stage 4 lung cancer on April 27th of this year and she started a GoFund me for her medical bills (she had no insurance) and knowing her, I knew she wasn't lying but I am sure other people may have doubted the diagnosis. She passed away 2 days ago in hospice. I am still in shock. Chat Icon Chat Icon

That is so sad! I'm so sorry!!!

Yes, this person is the type of person that ALWAYS had something else going wrong, nothing was ever her fault, she had collection companies calling where she worked (still 2 years after she was let go - she was NOT hired by me), she had a new residence every other month.. it's a very sad situation to start with. So when I saw the Go Fund Me page, I hate to say it, but I assumed it was a lie to get $$ to pay her bills. It's really amazing that she beat it, Stage 4 ovarian cancer!

Oh I can totally understand thinking the worst, I am always the skeptic. The only reason I knew she wasn't lying was because she texted me from the hospital saying she couldnt breathe and a few months ago when she was cutting my hair she was coughing a lot and I told her to see a doctor right away. I went to visit her at NUMC and at hospice and couldn't believe how ill she became in only a week, she was only in hospice for 1.5 days before passing. I am amazed your friend "beat" stage 4 ovarian cancer as cancer is a horribly sneaky disease (I just went through a cancer scare and my only symptoms that prompted surgery were cysts). My hairdresser was told she would be getting chemo and radiation once she was released from NUMC, until a day later when 1 lung collapsed and the doctors could do nothing more. It was awful. I'm shocked honestly, she has a horrible outlook on life, always the poor me story, and in my experience those with that kind of attitude do not normally beat cancer.. She's cancer free for about a year now, so I'm just impressed and shocked. I look at my aunt who had 2 lung cancer tumors removed 5 or 6 years ago, and I cannot believe this woman is still alive. She's got to be on her 9th life at this point...

She might not be cancer free. Stage 4 cancers are very serious. In breast cancer it means the cancer has metastasized - moved on to colonize other spots in the body - and the prognosis is not good, even though the person might be able to live with it for a while and get treatments. I believe that may be true for other cancers as well.

Frankly, if someone posted a GoFundMe for cancer treatment, I would look very carefully for the description of what that person actually says she has, where she is going for treatment and what that treatment might be, and how much it will cost. I had the works a few years ago and can tell you that chemo alone would have cost me about $36,000 without insurance. Add surgery and radiation, plus all the tests required, and extra doctors visits and the cost must have been fortune. Far beyond a GoFundMe campaign.

My darling sister began to invent a cancer after I was going through extensive treatment for breast cancer. I heard she was telling people about hers.

And some years before that she told another sister that she had three weeks to live. That sister was so shocked and upset that she immediately called the doctor they both use, and who she was told was treating sister one, only to be assured that sister one hadn't been in there for ages. It was a complete lie. Why? God only knows.
