Re: What is an appropriate wedding gift?

I have not been to a wedding in a really long time, but my standard was always $75 - $100 per person attending.

I consult my list to see what they gave me! Generally I give in the $200-$250 range.

Re: What is an appropriate wedding gift?

I wish some of you came to my wedding. I got married a few years ago and most couples gave me $100-$200. I don't think anyone gave us over $200. $200 was our highest gifter if I remember correctly. Most were $100-$150 per couple. When we go to weddings we give $150-$200 based on how close we are to them.

My standard is $300 for the 2 of us, $500 if either of us are in the wedding party.

Same here. And we've given more to really close friends.

This. 300-500 for 2 of us.

Same more like $100 pp.

Thank God I don't go to weddings now. I wouldn't be able to afford it and would feel dumb not giving the appropriate amount that people have posted.

99% of the people I know IRL give $100 per person attending as a base and then more for close friends/family.

Same here! Except I got $50 from a few couples and zero dollars from one!

I usually give $200. More if it's my best friend or very close family.

What is an appropriate wedding gift?

We give $250--$300.

Side note: I got married for the first time in 2010 and then again this year and for my 2nd, we received a lot less per couple on average, closer to $150/couple (and we didn't get gifts from about 20% of the wedding). Some have said it's because it was my 2nd marriage but I didn't have a lot of the same people at both weddings (and those people that were at both did give gifts). It may also have been because most of our wedding was from DH's side and were from outside NYC. It may have also been because it was a more "casual" wedding but the funny part is that this wedding cost more than my first one!

* ADDED new question and please dont quote..What is an appropriate wedding gift?

so DH and I thought 300 was what we could give. But now a comment was made by our inner circle that the venue and taste is cause for more than that... she getting married at the Rockleigh... DH says Im crazy and feels what we agreed on is enough.. now I am feeling some type of way...

Now I have an another question - I am having my makeup and hair done at the hotel we are staying at. What do I tip her..YIKES!

I have been to the Rockleigh. It's a nice venue but I would still give my standard gift. I don't consider the venue when making that decision.

As for the stylist, I would tip 20%

What is an appropriate wedding gift?

I find it astonishing that people pay to go to other people's weddings. Makes no sense. In my experience, the family or couple pays for the wedding and invites others to celebrate with them as their guests. People should scale their weddings appropriately for what they can afford, not expect others to pay for it or those attending are not guests, but customers paying their own way. I truly do not understand. It simply doesn't happen among any of my friends or people I know and would be considered rude in the extreme.

DO NOT GIVE MORE BASED ON THE VENUE!!!!!!!!!

If you were thinking $300, then that's a GREAT number. Its what you think is appropriate and what you can afford.

DO NOT TRY TO COVER YOUR "plate".

Give what you can afford and not based on the venue.

Yeah. THIS. I got married at Flowerfield. I loved the venue. NEVER ONCE did I walk in there and go - omg I want this place because it is X a head and that means that my guests will think along those lines and give more Chat Icon LMAO! I thought, I love this place! It didn't matter what my guests gave me!

And for other weddings I have been to - I went to one where it was $50 a head. Then, another where it was $450 a head. I certainly wasn't only going to give Bride A $100 and the bride who had an expensive wedding $900!! I mean, you just can't figure. And who knows what people pay! It all depends on season, weekday, availability, choices, etc. You'll go crazy! LOL!

*Additonal question added - What is an appropriate wedding gift?

Anyone read the article in Sunday's New York Times on how out of control and expensive some pre-wedding celebrations have been getting? It talks about how some brides simply expect their friends to spend crazy amounts of money to go to far flung events with them pre the main event.

The people interviewed talk about the painful cost of being expected to going on trips to be with the bride and having to pick and choose between their friends weddings as they can't afford to go to them all because of these almost mandatory events. While they mention giving wedding gifts, but they never do so in terms of giving the bride money or having to covering the cost of plates at the wedding itself. Why? Because it's not a universal custom.

*Additonal question added - What is an appropriate wedding gift?

So the wedding is over. Thank God... I left the gift to DH and he gave more than we agreed because hes special. I appreciate it - the bride is really my friend and he inherited the relationship and he didn't have to do that... I did tip the MUA 20% and probably would have given more because she was FAB! Thanks ladies for all the advice...
