Its not so black and white, and its the grey area that should be concerned. It is often these "grey" districts where I hear people say, "oh, its in the wealthy districts, or "good" districts" - that is the area that needs to be more aware.

Your tone is kind of defensive.

ALL areas- regardless of "good" district, diverse, terrible, fabulous, mediocre- ALL need to be aware.

Aren't you doing exactly what you are accusing not "good" districts of doing? You say you "know" none of your kids' friends/ classmates are using- but HOW do you know? Sadly, it's not always obvious until it's too late.

"ALL areas- regardless of "good" district, diverse, terrible, fabulous, mediocre- ALL need to be aware."
- that is EXACTLY the point I am trying to make. THats all I have been saying. In fact, its the exact point I was making in the part you quoted, it can be in ALL districts and this not in mine attitude.

What I SAID in regards to my district is that is exists, that we let our guard down, that it is a KNOWN problem we are actively trying to solution and recognize but that its not necessarily rampant in the districts, no, I DONT KNOW (doesnt mean there isnt, just that I dont know) any classmates that have been affected, I dont. I also said to that point that what I did know was that it seems to effect my area at a later age, post HS.

I said that when you divide it into "good" district vs "diverse" district and put the problem somehwere else, let your guard down in your community bc you think it is someone elses problem, thats when it happens. WHen you look only to the districts labeled "rampant" and assume its a large portion of our student body, thats not the case, its a small portion, but any portion is too big and ignore the fact that it can just as easily be your school next.

My point about not knowing anyone or it being less that 1% of my district in theory if 100 kids are using, is that people have this belief that its RAMPANT here but in fact its less than 1% theoretically if you have 100 kids using. People get hung up on the fact that they have heard its ALL OVER here and that is what they focus on, thinking its our problem, we are the ones with the huge problem, not them.....if they dont move here, or their kids dont go to school here that they are somehow protected from it. You have to see past that, and understand the bigger picture and not just believe its districts where it is "rampant"

Im not defensive, Im frustrated.......To just keep hearing, its in the "good districts" or its not in the "diverse" districts it leaves a huge portion thinking they fall in the safe zone.....NIMBY......until it is. Too many have died, islandwide, it continues to grow - until EVERYBODY recognizes it is in ALL neighborhoods, all walks of life.....we cannot stop this.

Re: Heroin on Long Island

its all over Bucks County where i live. rich suburban kids who get hooked on Oxy contin but get bored with it quick turn to heroin and meth. its in the middle class areas, the low income ares. Pharmacies are robbed all the time for Oxy pills. Its such an epidemic and it affects people every where.

a former coworker of mine lost her daughter (only like 23 or 24 yrs old) to a heroin overdose on xmas eve 2 yrs ago. She left behind a little girl.

So sad, and scary!!

How do we protect our kids? There is only so much we can do to guide them into making the right choices.

It's all over our area as well - since it's fairly inexpensive right now.

It is sad and scary. I've found baggies and needles in our neighborhood and someone a few streets over was arrested as part of a drug ring - but, there are more houses in the town that are "known" drug homes. So sad.

There are certain neighborhoods that are known for having heroin problems. I think the day we start finding needles in the parks, is the day our house goes on the market. Must be a better place , I would hope.

Disgusting, God forbid one of these little kids steps on or picks up a needle. And please stop with the "could be a medical thing". I highly doubt diabetic folks would be so irresponsible.

It's everywhere on LI. Especially in the "good neighborhoods".

100% true and its been like that for a while just not known as much. Heroin was a problem when I was in high school and I graduated in 2000.

my brother died from an overdose a few years ago.

Its a problem I hope goes away but if people keep "ignoring" the issue I don't see it getting better any time soon.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. You are right when you say "ignoring is the issue". For some, Hoping/ thinking a needle on the ground is for medical reasons is flat out ignoring the issue.

I think people are aware of it now more than ever. How can you not be. There are bank/store/gas station robberies almost daily because of it.

Where are you going to go?? As I stated previously, my friends in Merrick were finding it on their playgrounds. It's not like we are living in Wyandanch and we are going to move to Dix Hills-it's there too. I can't even tell you the amount of "diabetic needle" comments I've gotten. People want to turn a blind eye to this and deny its a problem in their community. In my development, we've lost 2 young adults in the last 4 years due to overdoses. Literally 6 houses down from me. But those needles are diabetic needles and the quads are a problem that people are calling the police about. I was literally standing with the police officer explaining how my child almost stabbed herself when she found 10 heroin needles in a cluster and a homeowner come out, flashes his badge and tells the officer how quads are an issue??? It's like wake up and smell the coffee people!!

I live in Putnam County and it is a problem here too, as it also is for Westchester. There is a decent amount of ethnic diversity here though the areas affected are pretty solidly middle class. My neighbor across the street was dealing for a while. DH and I would see cars coming and going frequently and we would joke about someone dealing drugs, then we felt bad for making assumptions. At the time I didn't know the woman next door to them was always finding little baggies in her yard and in the street near her house. The kid was arrested, the house was foreclosed and the rest of the family stayed in the neighborhood. A friend who lives a couple doors down is pretty sure the kid's mom is still dealing. On a good note it seems like law enforcement up here is getting good at busting the dealers.

It's everywhere in the northeast! I live in the capital district of NY and it is a problem here as well. It is also a HUGE problem in Vermont.

Naive question- how do you know it was a heroin needle?
As opposed to any other kind of drug that people shoot?

We call the cops when we find them and the cops told us they were heroin. My 9 year old was riding her bike and found about 10 needles in a bike trail behind our house. I believe we live in the same town as you. Such a shame!

If we do, I live right behind that bike trail- actually my house backs the Sump that part of the bike trail runs against.
I heard of drug use back there, but we are most bothered by the constant, illegal dirt bikes back there and have been working with the police on that....to not much avail, sadly

Yea the quads don't bother me. I've been here 13 years and they've always been here. Heroin needles are a bigger deal IMO.

We literally cannot use our backyard on certain days- the noise is so bad from them that you cannot hear yourself speak.
Neighbors who don't have the sump as a buffer like we do get clouds of dirt kicked up so bad they can't eat outside.
We are actually working with PSE&G now, as they own the property and they have installed cameras, etc.

I don't think anyone on here said the needles were for diabetics. I just read back over the whole thread.

I had asked how do you know it's heroin as opposed to another injectable ILLEGAL drug.
I was just curious how to identify heroin.

Someone did say they thought it could be medicinal.

While I was pregnant and 6 weeks pp I had to inject myself with a blood thinner. When I was all finished, I had multiple containers of needles I had to dispose of and I made so many phone calls - hospital, doctor, town - to try to get a clear answer on how I could dispose of them safely because I would have hated for someone to get hurt. I am sure 99.9% of people in the same boat would do the same.

This happens everywhere and it's one of the reasons I wish we had better mental health supports. I am willing to bet a lot of users need it.

Exactly! In my school districts area there have been so many bank robberies and gas station hold ups that it's scary! And the people holding them up are KIDS....HS and college age junkies! I don't know what the answer is to solve the problem....all I know is that I'm scared to death of it

Im glad they are listening and being proactive!

Yes I'm the neighborhood big mouth. Naturally, I freaked out because it was my kid who almost touched them. I think any parent would have the same reaction. We've been seeing police patrol a lot more down here, so that's good!

I have no idea what other illegal drug gets injected with a needle.

I think most everyone thinks heroin when they see needles laying in the streets and parks. Especially since it's such a problem everywhere on LI.

If you found it, what would your 1st thought have been?

Ok..yeah I've seen that also.
I'm pretty clueless about drugs also.

But I guess it really shouldn't matter which illegal drug it's used for.
Either way it's a user in your park or on your streets leaving the needles around for kids to find.

I'm sure people just automatically associate them with heroin because of the epidemic on LI right now.

Heroin is a huge problem on LI and a lot of other places as well. And it is ALL of LI not one district or type of area. ALL OF IT. It is easy to get, it's cheap and most are addicted after their first time.

A friend of mine from college dedicates himself to helping families of LI and getting their children into rehad for Heronin Addiction. The anoymous stories he posts and the number of people he helps in a week is astounding.

Here is his website if you are interested.
http://www.liheroinhelp.com/

If it something enough people want an education on, he will gladly set up time to come and speak to groups and he is always looking for volunteers to help with phone calls, emails, etc.

In addition to helping these families he is an advocate in trying to get insurance laws changed and treatments covered. It is very scary how bad it is and how unprepared our health care system is to help people.

This whole epidemic boggles my mind and scares the crap out of me. I just don't understand how people ever even start heroin??? I think it's a pretty well known fact that you don't just recreationally do heroine.

I hope police are going after the big drug dealers. That seems to be the obvious answer.

I am now faced with educating my 2 and 4 year olds on what a drug syringe is and to never touch one if they should come across one at a park, on the street, at school, etc. Chat Icon

This all sickens and infuriates me.
