I agree the system is broken.

I used to have a different opinion on welfare.

And then I worked everyday in a high crime school district with families and students. Many in welfare.

I had to sit there and listen to adults telling me they didn't have to work. They are On Welfare. That they get more with disability and welfare checks than getting up every morning and getting a job.

And then I have to work with school refusers convincing them to go to school so they can have a good life for themselves. While they see their adult caretakers having a pretty good life from their perspective.

I had to work with parents who refused better school placements for their kids because they would have to pay 5.00 a week for their lunch, and they could get free lunch in their home school so that was why they based their school choice. Because they were "on welfare and couldn't afford it".

When my husband was laid off, I probably couldn't afford the 5.00 weekly either, but I also couldn't afford weekly manicures, tablets for every family member, getting my hair done weekly, and matching sneakers for every single one of my son's designer outfits. And we went 2 weeks in the winter without oil. But we still made too much to qualify for services.

I left work everyday last year very bitter about the welfare system. I am not blaming the ones who received it. Not completely. They are part of the broken system and they are getting what they can out of it. But the career criminals, the cop issues, all of this isn't going to end any time soon. And that is truly heart breaking.

Sad. The sense of entitlement disturbs me. Getting something for nothing. It sadly feels to me like this country is becoming half workers and half takers. This case has really brought so many things to light and I hope they aren't swept under the rug now that the protests have quieted down.

Re: Prosecutors Charge 6 Baltimore Officers in Freddie Gray Death

I was talking to my boyfriend, a police lieutenant, who served our beautiful country as a marine, active duty for six years... And he gets a little worked up about how people bash police *sometimes* but, for the most part, he's so calm about it.

Watching TV about Baltimore and even Ferguson before it gets me up to a MILLION. And then to see something like PO Moore's death and the massacres of officers like the two NYPD in late December not getting nearly as much coverage bothers me so much. Tonight I finally said to him, how do you not get MORE upset?!

He has such a way about him Chat Icon he turns to me, looks up from his book, sighs, and goes:

Like Nicholson said in A Few Good Men, "I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of protection I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it."

Re: Prosecutors Charge 6 Baltimore Officers in Freddie Gray Death

Sigh. I, for the most part, feel that most people in this thread are not bashing the police. I think we have a right to question what went on with the police and Freddie Gray. I don't think that's bashing. I just refuse to follow something blindly. I think it is our right to question something if we feel it isn't right.

I'm sorry that you are angry that it is not getting more coverage. It really is a tragedy. He was so young and the act was so senseless.

That being said, I understand your anger. I'm angry, too. I'm angry that this whole ordeal is happening again. I'm angry that people are so nonchalant about it. I'm also angry how the media portrayed it. There have been peaceful protests, but it wasn't shown. No one listened. Not that it makes it right to riot, but people listened.

This isn't the first time for riots. Look at the history of riots (Boston Tea Party, the Haymarket affair, Stonewall riots, tons of women's riots, including one so we could vote and many more) and, sadly, they get results. You have an angry group of people with a history of having their rights denied. Something is going to snap eventually. It's just human nature, unfortunately.

I'm sorry, but it's my right to question things. It doesn't mean I'm bashing anything.

This whole thread is going around and around in circles. I'm so surprised by some responses, too.

Thank you for posting this! It angers me so much that if you question actions of a cop you are labeled as a cop hater/basher on this site. As if sympathizing with this young man and saying these cops are wrong means I am happy with the death of officer Moore or that I hate cops. I think not questioning police officers and automatically blaming Freddie Gray is exactly what people are saying is messed up with this system.

Also the comments people are making in terms of these neighborhoods are really sickening and ignorant. It's not so easy as just saying everyone has a choice and they can just get out. My mother literally killed herself trying to get out. So unless you really know the struggles then quite honesty I think people should really stfu. Yes everyone has a choice not to do crime or become a criminal, that I agree with but its hard to break the cycle. Trust me I know, my sister and I broke that cycle. But a lot of our friends did not.

I will never come on here and say blankets statements about being a police officer or what their families go through. However, they are human beings that are capable of making a mistake. It's too many deaths on both sides and something has to change.

This statement makes me feel ill.

It is our right at citizens to question the actions of our police, who are after all public servants. They are not above questioning and this mindset is frankly frightening.

That quote is very disconcerting.

So, because the police protect us, we should just shut up and not question anything they do?

I agree as well. It's what prompted me to write the above. I saw it this morning on my commute to work. I literally felt sick.

so wait cause the cops protect us we should never question them and everything they do is 100% right?

So that cop in SC who shot that running (if you want to call that running) suspect in the back numerous times, then what seem to plant evidence on him should have never be questioned and we should have all just accepted he did was ok???!!!

the ignorance, racism, and the way people think in general in this thread, on FB, and in our society its disturbing and sad.

just because I think some cops are bad and shouldn't be cops doesn't mean I hate all cops. I feel horrible for PO Moore he didn't deserve that at all.

Also I am sick of hearing who gets coverage and why. IMO things get covered when people make a big enough deal about it and the media wants to cover it. seems like anything that get lots of attention is because people are forcing it out there in the media.

I have not seen that movie in many years but wasn't Nicholson's character arrested for his role in a Marine's death? I somehow don't find it a good quote for showing support for law enforcement.

I really believe the vast majority of officers are in the job with good intentions but there are always a few who want to abuse their authority and/or are inept. I don't get why people can't seem to separate the two and seem to attibute deaths like Freddy Gray's to his actions. He was not a saint but he did not deserve what he got, whether it was from negligence or intent.

I didn't like that quote from a few good men and I also didn't like a few comments on this thread about black kids not having fathers and role models and such.

Plenty of white kids who are disrespectful and have dead beat fathers. All teens idolize artists and their possessions , not just black kids. And people in general need to wake up and see that other kids (white ones too!!) are disrespectful of police.

It's a young generational issue. I don't think it's a black kid issue, as so many alluded to here.

Wow some of you are really just LOOKING for a fight aren't you? If you read her comment BEFORE the quote it was how does HE not get upset about what is happening! It's HIS perspective to keep him going. Here's a thought why don't you guys go volunteer in an inner city? A soup kitchen? A school? For the Police Department? Make the change you want to see. My guess is there will be a million reasons why you can't or won't or how it's not my job blah blah blah. When YOU are in trouble or need help don't even bother calling the police then......call someone in a poverty stricken minority area to help you. This is just fing disgusting. You all are 100% blameless in life. Never did ANYTHING that could have harmed someone? Never drove while tips?, Never used your cell while driving? Never broke a company policy? T+It happened, they were wrong. YOU were not there. YOU do NOT know what happened. Heck I doubt the officers don't even know exactly wtf happened. Way to be judge and jury after you all cry how dare the police do that. We hold them to a higher standard blah blah blah. Guess what those uniforms DO NOT come with capes. They do NOT come with the ability to see the future. They DO NOT make them imortal or free of mistakes. You are asking for perfection from people! How dare you sit on your computer and type about how awful these cops were and then go back to YOUR job and make a mistake or need help. It's gross.

Exactly.

And really? Like it, don't like it, love it... whatever. I couldn't care less.

And if it makes someone feel ill that's fine. Anyone else's opinion of my boyfriend or me means, honestly, less than nothing to me.

Until you have been shot at like he has, don't even.

There's no point in even answering you.

Why don't you take your fight and do some good with it -- go fight for our country.

There's the issue - as an example.

While everyone needs to respect law and we should teach our kids to do so, cops and supporters need to stop the mentality of "question me? Then go **** yourself and now you're our enemy, too."

It's gonna be a never ending cycle until BOTH sides have an open and honest discussion on matters.

And you make posts all the time that are rude and snarky for no reason at all. My post about how I feel about the Mayor echoes how MANY people feel. What difference does that make?

Again, you just want to fight.

Proves my point.

Did it, for many, many years. Lots of people volunteer in those communities and teach in those schools. Have you? If you have done what you're telling others to do you'll see that it's way more complicated than showing up to volunteer a few times a week. It would be more helpful to admit that no one has the answers and bad cops don't help.
