If we live in a country where you are innocent until proven guilty, I guess that's not the case for police officers.

And to generalize that all police are bad is just as ignorant.

The system failed him? Really... The system that provides welfare, food stamps, housing and now health insurance. So people can hang out and not have ANY motivation to get a job because they get a hand out. The system failed him? No the system fails people who bother to get an education and bust their asses to go to work everyday and watch 50% of their paycheck gone to taxes before they even get it in their pocket...

So Im sorry Im SOOO sick of hearing how the system failed.

I have never been shot at or beaten or mistreated by cops because when Im pulled over. I pull over. I listen to the officer. I respect them. I don't run from them. I RESPECT THEM.

Are there bad officers? Absolutely! I don't disagree with that. BUT that doesn't give anyone the right to generalize ALL. And the same goes for the black race. A few bad does not mean all are bad. BUT give me a break with Freddie Grey was a poor innocent man. He was a career criminal. PERIOD. It does change everything. It does not mean that he deserved to die, he does not. NO ONE DOES. BUT it does change the way officers are going to react to him. Do you know how many criminals that get arrested try to get out of getting booked by saying they are hurt? or their wrists hurt, the cuffs are too tight. I need a hospital. They play it up if they think people are watching.
And now everyone has a phone to video tape them.
Do you know what it feels like to go out on the streets to protect people that hate you? to get paid dirt $? Then be told YOUR the problem. People who videotape things and take it out of context.

how about look at the statistics for black on black crime? In any city including Baltimore... IT FAR FAR FAR OUTWEIGHS the # of people killed by cops. Where are the riots? Where is the outrage? In the city of Baltimore look at what those people did to their own community? Their community that is so poor... They destroyed small businesses of people that live in their own community. They destroyed a brand new senior center that was built to help the elderly of their own community. The CVS that provides medicine to the people of their community.

Bringing up the past to show the character of the people that we are discussing is just another way to bring more information to the conversation.

What information does it bring? His rap sheet or past has nothing to do with the way he should be treated in custody. Bringing up his past is just a way of victim blaming and looking for ways to justify the behavior of the officers.

To me, there was a lot of words being used showing him to be this innocent person in general. The rap sheet shows otherwise.
Was he innocent in this particular circumstance? Yes and no. Yes because he was arrested wrongfully and then later died due to the negligence of the officers. But no because he ran when the cop looked at him. Running from the police is practically an admission of guilt in some way.

I believe that running from police is not an admission of guilt in Maryland. I read that somewhere, but the law is not clear. I'll have to read up on that.

But one thing is that he was falsely arrested. That knife on him was legal in Maryland. False arrest is a felony, I think.

He was falsely arrested. That seems to be the truth. Though I don't know what happened after they chased him. Did he resist them then? If so, that could be the reason for the arrest.
I will say that it looks as though the evidence is pointing to the fact that their negligence is what caused his injury which then caused his death. Because of that, I do believe in the charges brought up against the officers in this case. I have to wonder what the punishment is for this though? And what will the people be happy with as a punishment. That's what scares me about it. Unless they fry, I don't see everyone being happy and what will happen then?

Thank you for clearing up that about Fox & Friends...

And for the record, I have watched Fox news before. Chat Icon Mainly to try and see the mindset of the other side of things. But I then like to do research after to see if what they have said is true. They are not fair and balanced, and a lot of their "facts" are not facts.

I even do that when I read other news sources (NYT, NPR, BBC, Al Jeezera, Spiegel, Guardian, etc.). I stick to ones that give me the facts after I fact check.

Both he AND the cops were wrong. Unfortunately- he paid with his life. Now they should, too.

The point is that the crimes he committed are not punishable by the death penalty. He didn't live his life in such a way that he deserved to die.

No- I never said he did. He was a repeat drug dealer who ran from the cops- which was why I said he was wrong. I absolutely do NOT believe he deserved to die, which is why I said UNFORTUNATELY- he paid with his life. AND so should the 'officers'.

the us Supreme Court has ruled on this, so it would be law in md too. Running from police can be used as a factor in deciding to make an arrest.

With all these case about cops brutality or how cops are handling things something is very clear some cops need to be trained better/differently.

Are all cops bad no but not all of them are good.

I don't care what the criminal was doing, don't care what rap sheet they had, where they lived, I don't care if they ran etc. none of that should matter and be used to justify someone dying by cops when it wasn't necessary.

Absolutely!!!!!! Agree completely. I hate when i see "black lives matter". It seems as though black lives only matter when killed by white men or cops. I hate that black people killed by other black people does not get people this heated. This has to stop. ALL lives matter. PERIOD. On a side note, the thing that really kills me about this case is we have NO IDEA what actually happened yet. The people protesting in Baltimore have 100% decided that these cops are guilty of murder without knowing FACTS! There are SO many unanswered questions here. It seems obvious that there was some poor judgement used here, but until I hear all the facts I will stick with the way our country is supposed to run and say they are innocent until PROVEN guilty, not the other way around. I am honestly sick about what is happening and see no end in sight. All I want to hear now is plans to move forward and improve relationships.

You're right. It's not the case for everyone. But that's because of the choices they made. That is my point. There were others who grew up the same I as did. Dead, Jail and Living on the streets now. CHOICES. I am not to blame for the poor choices of others. Neither is one race over the other.

I don't think people are saying his rap sheet is the reason hes dead. What they are saying is people are making so many excuses for a criminal. He was a criminal. Did he deserve to Die because of his crimes. No Way! Did he deserve to die bc of the negligence of these officers? No Way! People also brought up the fact that one of these officers may have been mentally unstable and was then saying how the baltimore police dept shouldn't have had him working at the time. I agree. Bringing up the past to show the character of the people that we are discussing is just another way to bring more information to the conversation.

People in this thread and another thread were bringing his record into the conversation. It doesn't mean much in this argument.

I get what you are saying about making choices. I really do. But I think it's worth looking into why poverty and crime happen so much. Why are they making such choices? IMO, it's the only thing they know. It's almost like they are born into a situation where they have no chance. I find that sad.

Then on top of this, there are police, who in this example, abuse their power. There are statistics that the BPD has a high rate of brutality. This spreads among the community and then there is fear and distrust of the police. It just snowballs from there. Is it right? No. Is it an excuse? No. But we can help instead of just saying get a job.

One may have gotten out of poverty on their own, but that doesn't work for everyone. People need social services. This community especially needs services.

It's worth using Baltimore as an example because it is happening all over the country. It keeps happening? The same thing again and again. I don't know the answer, but I definitely have some compassion for what's going on. I am thankful that I'm so fortunate. To be honest, I just did what was available to me. It was available to me. It isn't available to others.

...

This time it cost a mans life, I am sorry for him, but his wrap sheet is beyond ridiculous. It is sad to say, and this doesn't justify anything at all, but a man with a wrap sheet like that is going to wind up dead somehow, or a lifer in prison.

...

So excuse me if I don't have as much remorse for a career criminal, because if he lived his life like a regular citizen, he would be alive today.

And how could he have lived his life like a regular citizen? He grew up in a home with lead paint chipping off the walls. His school had drinking fountains he couldn't drink out of because of lead pipes, and so many other factors. Why is this happening? Saying well he could have lived his life like a regular citizen is really easy, and quite ignorant, for us to say because of where we come from.

The system failed him, and is still failing the neighbourhood.

FWIW there are many sides to this issue and there is no doubt that this young man made poor choices.

I wanted to quote the person who first questioned how the system failed him but I can't find the post.

The system doesn't always mean mean food stamps and such.

I want to share an example of how the system fails people. (If anyone cares lol.)

I say this at certain personal risk but I've decided I don't really care anymore.

I am a high school teacher in a lower income area in Brooklyn. While I have many good students, I also have many who are headed down a similar path to that of this young man Freddy Grey. I've been here at my school almost 4 years and I've seen it all – drugs left in my room, shootings outside my window, etc. Not every day, but often enough. We have students who show up rarely or never because "they just didn't feel like coming to school."

My principal constantly implores us to pass students who have done little to no work. My colleagues and I have literally been told "find a way to pass them". If not enough students graduate from our school we risk getting shut down, which costs the faculty, especially the principal, prestige among other things. As a result, our principal bases a LOT on our class passage rate, from our evaluation, to tenure, to his treatment of us as individuals. Ultimately not pushing enough students through could cost a lot of us our livelihoods.

My point is that educators at all levels are rewarded for pushing students through the system - or punished for not - which teaches many students that there is no need to take personal responsibility and that they do not have to do real work to succeed in life. I have talked to many colleagues in similar situations and this seems to be the case in many schools with a large minority population.

Some teachers play this game to the fullest extent while others like me will not. Yes, I have passed some students that I probably shouldn't have, but I refused to pass the ones who have literally done no work, and I just found out that, for the second year in a row, my "low" passage rate will once AGAIN have cost me tenure. But I like sleeping at night, because I have no desire to send young men and women out into the world with a massive sense of entitlement.

So this is where the "system" comes in. It does not hold people responsible enough. To be clear I am not talking about Freddy Grey here. I have no idea if the system "pushed him through". I am speaking in general. We need reform in a lot of areas.

AGAIN, NOT an excuse. A reason. If we want to make things better, let's reform the system to give people the BEST possible circumstances in which to make better choices.

JennP- thanks for sharing. I hope people get the points you are trying to make as you expressed them well. My experience is similar to yours. I worked in the South Bronx for 16 years, in a low income neighborhood middle school.

It's very easy to make assumptions about people who live in these neighborhoods, especially the ones who turn to crime. But it's way more complicated that that. It's easy to say, as people have said on this site many times, "well, they should just get jobs," and 'they should stay in school' etc, etc.

But when you're a young person with no real role models, when you look back at your family and largely see people on welfare and/or in low-paying, menial jobs, it's hard to aspire to something else, especially when you're in a school like the one Jenn described, or the one I worked in which was similar. It's a rare kid who can work his or her way out- but I have to say, nearly every kid I taught who became successful had at least one parent who put everything else aside to push and support that child.

The pull of the street is very strong. I saw lots of kids over the years- nice kids- get sucked into crime and worse. When your school sucks and your neighborhood's a hole and the building you live in is basically a dump, and you see the drug dealer or pimp with a nice car offering you something, what do you think is going to stand out? Like Jenn, I am not pointing these things out to make excuses for people- but it's easy to look at judge from afar especially if you never spent much time in an inner city neighborhood which I bet most of you haven't. Poverty is a huge factor in many of these debates we have had- and from reading lots of these comments it's way more easier to judge and bash instead of think about the backstory.

Re: Prosecutors Charge 6 Baltimore Officers in Freddie Gray Death

What can be done then? A big issue I imagine is the lack of good role model aka "father". Because the reality for many is that they don't have "fathers" in their picture, their mothers have babies with men they are not married to, will never see again, are trouble, etc. So how does that cycle get broken?

What can be done then? A big issue I imagine is the lack of good role model aka "father". Because the reality for many is that they don't have "fathers" in their picture, their mothers have babies with men they are not married to, will never see again, are trouble, etc. So how does that cycle get broken?

I agree how does it get broken? When you go into these inner city neighborhoods, they weren't always like that. At one time, they were nice neighborhoods. And I agree that a strong father figure would probably make somewhat of a difference.

Maybe these celebrities that promote fckng hoes, and beamers, and grills should focus more on their failing youth. Maybe these celebrities that glorify drug dealing, and guns, and gang violence, should focus on their people, and trying to get them to see work hard play harder.

The good role models that are out there for them are not glorified. The rappers promoting filth and waste are. So maybe people should be taking a stand against them.

Agreed. WHY are the Al Sharpton's of the world only outspoken when a white man has done something to a black person? Why are they not focusing on why so many of these children are not growing up with fathers and positive role models? Why are they not out there trying to empower people to take control of their lives and become upstanding citizens?

Yes, of course there are some "dirty cops" out there and that needs to be addressed for sure but I think at this point, it is honestly a smoke screen for the real problems in these areas that nobody knows how to fix or is brave enough to discuss publicly.

The ONLY thing I hope and pray that comes out of this travesty is that dialogue can begin to start making some positive changes in this country. No more name calling and blaming. We have enough worries of people outside this country hating & wanting to harm us. We need to truly become the UNITED States of America. One can only hope Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree the system is broken.

I used to have a different opinion on welfare.

And then I worked everyday in a high crime school district with families and students. Many in welfare.

I had to sit there and listen to adults telling me they didn't have to work. They are On Welfare. That they get more with disability and welfare checks than getting up every morning and getting a job.

And then I have to work with school refusers convincing them to go to school so they can have a good life for themselves. While they see their adult caretakers having a pretty good life from their perspective.

I had to work with parents who refused better school placements for their kids because they would have to pay 5.00 a week for their lunch, and they could get free lunch in their home school so that was why they based their school choice. Because they were "on welfare and couldn't afford it".

When my husband was laid off, I probably couldn't afford the 5.00 weekly either, but I also couldn't afford weekly manicures, tablets for every family member, getting my hair done weekly, and matching sneakers for every single one of my son's designer outfits. And we went 2 weeks in the winter without oil. But we still made too much to qualify for services.

I left work everyday last year very bitter about the welfare system. I am not blaming the ones who received it. Not completely. They are part of the broken system and they are getting what they can out of it. But the career criminals, the cop issues, all of this isn't going to end any time soon. And that is truly heart breaking.
