If you think everyone has the same fair shake at a good life, you're wrong.

If you think everyone has the same opportunities, you're wrong.

If you think school systems, housing, assistance and poverty is the same for everyone, you're wrong.

Get off LIF, turn off Fox News and educate yourselves on the world we live in.

Life is what you make of it. Blaming and finger pointing doesn't solve problems and give you a better chance.

Good things come to those who go out and earn them.

You are missing my point. It doesn't work that way in impoverished communities 100% of the time.

If you're invested in this discussion it would really, really benefit you to open your eyes.

Here is where I get confused. So let's say I agree with you

But what does that mean. That crime is all they know bc it's how one could survive That they did what they had to do to make ends meet?

What about every other person living in the area that did not commit crimes and chose another path

I don't think saying get up and get a job is the answer and I don't think saying grow up in these situations and see how your life is,is the answer either

There has to be a medium somewhere. I don't know what it is. But I don't think having zero compassion for someone arrested multiple multiple times makes me blind or wrong

I think that maybe you should try opening your eyes to the fact that you may not have all the answers on this. That there are many sides to every story and plenty of opinions after that.

If you read what I wrote earlier - YES. Even if you come from poverty, you can be a productive member of society. I believe it starts at home. With positive role models as parents or guardians, you have a better chance at knowing right from wrong and knowing that 2 wrongs don't make a right.

I stand by my statement.
If you sit back and wait for what you think should be coming to you, you've got some wait.

Exactly? How do you explain MOST of the community in Baltimore who did not riot, loot and burn their city down? All those hardworking citizens who try their best to better the lives of the people living there. Who work hard to provide for their families and who obey the laws? Why didn't the lead paint, poverty stricken town and terrible injustice by the nation sway them to a life of crime?

The same can be said for you...

You should Turn on Fox News which airs REAL NEWS and open your eyes... Take a look at real statistics... Real crime rates and whose committing them... Don't believe the propaganda you've been fed by your govt to make you more dependent on them...

They need more assistance? How much more do they need? The system IS BROKEN... BUT ITS BECAUSE of people who take advantage of it. Not because it doesn't do enough.

Remember the expression, when you point a finger outward there are 4 more pointing back at you...

i'll tell you why. Because criminals are just that. Criminals. We didn't make them. They made themselves. Criminals have ZERO excuses.

The only criminal I will give an excuse to is the mom who works 3 jobs and still cant afford formula and she gets caught shoplifting from walgreens bc her baby is hungry. Her? Her I'll forgive

I'd like to answer this question. I grew up poor. The kind of poor that has the lights off, hoping the landlord will give us a few months to catch up and eating homemade pancakes and/or pasta for dinner. A LOT.

My family obeyed the law. We had trouble qualifying for government help and what we did get, paid for nothing. Everyone worked their butts off bc they had to. My siblings dropped out of school when my father got sick and couldn't work anymore. They all worked in a factory and made peanuts, but we still had a home to live in and food to eat. One of my siblings got in trouble with the law. Mostly petty stuff and then big time when he got older. He served time and learned his lesson.

There's so much more, but I think you see my point.

There are CHOICES everyone makes. Could the 6 of us as a family just let the landlord try and kick us out and live there rent free? Could my mother have just stopped working and gotten us more money from the government? Yes. She sure could have. But the example shown to us by our parents, NOT BY THE STATE, THE SCHOOLS, THE GOVERNMENT, taught us how to make the right choices. Even though it's hard. Even though it's not fair. Life isn't always fair. But if you choose to live in sh!t, you will never rise above it.

I'm sorry you grew up that way. Good for you that your family got out of it.

However, that is not the case for everyone. Statistics show this. Like a previous poster said, not everyone has the same opportunities. One might go and get a job, but if it's minimum wage, that won't get you out of poverty.

What's really getting me is people are saying "look at his rap sheet, he made poor choices, that's why he's dead". That's not the case.

The problem is people like you not holding the convict accountable for their actions. It is always, well he did it because of A, B, & C. Really??? NO, he did it because that was the CHOICE he made. I don't care if you come from the slums, or Beverly Hills, people are born with enough common sense to make judgement calls.

I went to school where I was white minority, I have seen things go on in bad neighborhoods. I was beyond annoyed when I watched fellow students receive a free education and free books, but rock Jordans, nails done, hair done, dressed to the 9's. Meanwhile I am working 2 jobs and going to school full time. It's a choice people.

I also had someone very close to be become a heroin addict. Scum of the earth, heroin addict. Stealing from old ladies, from family members, dealing the heroin, spent time in jail. etc... His parents kicked him out and He is now a hardworking man living an amazing life. He made the CHOICE to rise above it. He chose to do heroin. He wasn't robbing old ladies because of some tramatic experience in his life. He chose every single thing that happened to him.

Everyone is so coddled today it makes me sick. The world worked so much better when people were accountable for their actions. Their actions were not blamed on circumstances in their life.

And to the poster who said everyones life is equal. No way in hell is a pedophile or rapists life equal to mine. Those pieces of shiit can rot in hell.

I don't think people are saying his rap sheet is the reason hes dead. What they are saying is people are making so many excuses for a criminal. He was a criminal. Did he deserve to Die because of his crimes. No Way! Did he deserve to die bc of the negligence of these officers? No Way! People also brought up the fact that one of these officers may have been mentally unstable and was then saying how the baltimore police dept shouldn't have had him working at the time. I agree. Bringing up the past to show the character of the people that we are discussing is just another way to bring more information to the conversation.

People in this thread and another thread were bringing his record into the conversation. It doesn't mean much in this argument.

I get what you are saying about making choices. I really do. But I think it's worth looking into why poverty and crime happen so much. Why are they making such choices? IMO, it's the only thing they know. It's almost like they are born into a situation where they have no chance. I find that sad.

Then on top of this, there are police, who in this example, abuse their power. There are statistics that the BPD has a high rate of brutality. This spreads among the community and then there is fear and distrust of the police. It just snowballs from there. Is it right? No. Is it an excuse? No. But we can help instead of just saying get a job.

One may have gotten out of poverty on their own, but that doesn't work for everyone. People need social services. This community especially needs services.

It's worth using Baltimore as an example because it is happening all over the country. It keeps happening? The same thing again and again. I don't know the answer, but I definitely have some compassion for what's going on. I am thankful that I'm so fortunate. To be honest, I just did what was available to me. It was available to me. It isn't available to others.

Prosecutors Charge 6 Baltimore Officers in Freddie Gray Death

I think that believing it is easy to rise above poverty and a poor upbringing is ignorant. My cousins grew up in Shirley/Mastic. There was a boy and a girl, several years apart. The boy saw his father get shot down in the driveway by a cop and killed. They both grew up with a drug addicted mother and a father/step-father who was, and still is, a waste of space. My male cousin I have not seen in years and years. He is a drug addict, in and out of rehab and jail. My female cousin is currently 'engaged' to a man who was recently in jail and is living in a trailer with him and another man. Not a regular trailer, mind you, but a landscaping-type trailer with no windows or doors. No electricity or water. My family members, including my own parent, tried to help them. My father gave male cousin a job at his business and rented him an apartment. He had a chance at a good life. Within two months the apartment was destroyed and he was gone. Female cousin lost her mother, has a father who doesn't care about her life and she was also given a ton of help. She couldn't deal with rules and normalcy because she spent her entire life without it. It's amazing to me that female cousin isn't addicted, dead or have a slew of babies with different men. She has been holding a job as a cashier in a Dollar Tree for a few years and she STILL LIVES IN A LANDSCAPING TRAILER.

I also think it's ignorant to think his rap sheet is inconsequential. He's not an upstanding citizen just trying to make ends meet. Along with the multiple drug-related charges (with intent to sell, so he wasn't just addicted), there were charges for burglary and assault on there. Charge after charge, month after month. He was given a second chance, then a third, then a fourth and so on. The cops knew him well, probably.

I believe all of these cops should be held liable and be put away for murder. Because Freddie grey was a victim of circumstance and they were careless with his life.

Both he AND the cops were wrong. Unfortunately- he paid with his life. Now they should, too.

Bringing up the past to show the character of the people that we are discussing is just another way to bring more information to the conversation.

What information does it bring? His rap sheet or past has nothing to do with the way he should be treated in custody. Bringing up his past is just a way of victim blaming and looking for ways to justify the behavior of the officers.

Both he AND the cops were wrong. Unfortunately- he paid with his life. Now they should, too.

The point is that the crimes he committed are not punishable by the death penalty. He didn't live his life in such a way that he deserved to die.

You're right. It's not the case for everyone. But that's because of the choices they made. That is my point. There were others who grew up the same I as did. Dead, Jail and Living on the streets now. CHOICES. I am not to blame for the poor choices of others. Neither is one race over the other.

It's worth looking into

This is an eloquent way of saying what I really don't have time to say.

As I was reading the responses I kept thinking there is a difference between a REASON and an EXCUSE.

If we want to prevent situations like these from happening again, one way to tackle it is to solve the social problems that contribute to being REASONS for these actions (again, NOT EXCUSES.)

I also happen to believe that repeat offenders need harsher sentences.

It's a big problem that should be tackled in many ways.

What information does it bring? His rap sheet or past has nothing to do with the way he should be treated in custody. Bringing up his past is just a way of victim blaming and looking for ways to justify the behavior of the officers.

To me, there was a lot of words being used showing him to be this innocent person in general. The rap sheet shows otherwise.
Was he innocent in this particular circumstance? Yes and no. Yes because he was arrested wrongfully and then later died due to the negligence of the officers. But no because he ran when the cop looked at him. Running from the police is practically an admission of guilt in some way.

What is this? No, this isn't biased at all. The background (Libertarian party sign, Surviving Obama book, etc).

Believe me. I understand being born into a situation that feels impossible to get out of. I have friends, some I consider more like family, from both ends of this. The poorest of poor from bad families and never had a chance, but made it. To people who were born into money and privilege who did nothing with it to wind up living like crap.

I don't think it's the fault of the white race for poor black communities. That's my number one statement. It's just not. At least not anymore.
I blame the lack of guidance. The poor already get help financially. That doesn't seem to be helping the cause. More money isn't he answer. Blaming white privilege isn't the answer. The answer is in the adults. They need to show strength and teach the younger generation how to be a productive member of society. When I saw the older generations lining up between the protesters and police, I felt a sense of pride for them. I was taking to the TV saying see!! These are the men and women who should be leading the positively in the community. These kids look up to drug dealers and criminals bc they have nice stuff. But they should be looking up to the older generation as positive role models.

How to make the connection between that generation and this? I don't know. I hope someone comes up with a way to do it though
