Food From China

I am trying to avoid eating food from China.

I recently found out that the frozen fish and the apple juice (Apple & Eve of all brands!!) that I give my DD comes from China Chat Icon I obviously won't be buying those again.

So many foods do not list where they come from and/are produced. I have no idea about my chicken and many other products. Even apple and eve lists the ingredients on some boxes but other boxes do not state where they are sourcing it from.

Is there anywhere I could find a list of brands that use China?

Any helpful links or information would be greatly appreciated.

Well, there are a lot of reasons. But a main concern is safety. Food that comes from China has been proven to be tainted, contaminated, poisoned... however you want to put it. There have been many food inspectors and chefs from the US who have gone to China and said they literally threw up observing the conditions and seeing the so called "food". It is a well known fact that much of the fish that comes from China is fed human poop! Raw sewage. Which is worse than animal feces. They have said it is grossly handled, have no standards and well, do you want abnormal things in your food like metal, bacteria, etc.

Here is one article from CNN that I am pasting below:

Almost half of Chinese food-processing plants fail to meet internationally acceptable standards, new figures suggest. Quality control specialist AsiaInspection said 48% of the "several thousand" inspections, audits and tests it conducted in China last year failed to meet the requirements stipulated by some of its clients -- Western food trading companies and retailers.

"There are horror stories, obviously," Mathieu Labasse, AsiaInspection's vice president told CNN by phone. "We find factories that just have no basic idea about hygiene standards. People that handle the food, they have no gloves, nothing."

Labasse said there was a host of reasons for the failings. In some cases, laboratory tests found abnormal levels of pesticides, antibiotics, heavy metals, bacteria or viruses that could put consumers at risk.

Other transgressions included mislabeling packaging, abnormal coloring and odors, bruising and, in the case of seafood, adding water to make the fish appear to weigh more than it does.

China has experienced a string of stomach-churning food scandals in recent years.

The most high-profile recent case involved a U.S.-owned meat factory operating in China that was accused of selling out-of-date and tainted meat to clients including McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC and Pizza Hut chains.

"We see awareness growing but we don't see on the ground a concrete improvement yet -- it will come," Labasse said.

Labasse said the extremely fragmented nature of China's food chain -- the country has 500,000 food production and processing companies, 70% of which have fewer than 10 employees -- made it very difficult for authorities to control and foreign buyers to understand.

"Companies like McDonald's or KFC are dealing with their suppliers at arm's length. So they know well the people they communicate with on a daily basis but they don't know what's going on behind the scenes," said Labasse.

Re: Food From China

And here is an article (cut, not the full article) from the NY Times.

HONG KONG — There’s mercury in the baby formula. Cabbages are sprayed with formaldehyde. Gelatin capsules for pills, tens of millions of them, are laced with chromium. Used cooking oil is scooped out of gutters for recycling, right along with the sewage.

Accounts of dubious or unsafe food in China are as mesmerizing as they are disturbing — “artificial green peas,” grilled kebabs made from cat meat, contaminated chives, chlorine showing up in soft drinks.

There have been stories of imitation soy sauce made from hair clippings, ink and paraffin being used to dress up cheap noodles, and pork buns so loaded with bacteria that they glow in the dark.

A new investigation by the Chinese magazine Caixin has found that “these publicized food safety scandals represent only a fraction of unsafe food production practices. Hundreds of chemical food additives are pumped into products that Chinese people consume every day.”

I am looking for valid information, please don't turn this thread into a carvel #2 thread. I am not judging anyone for eating food from China. I just want resources to avoid it. Keep the drama on the other thread!

For apple juice, the Nature's Promise brand always says from Turkey. So if you want to try that one instead. Not sure about other brands like BJ's or the Target one but it usually is stamped on there.

I know right. When I called the juice company about it (sourced from: USA, Bolivia & China) I asked why couldn't they do solely US & Bolivia, why did they have to add in China? Can they please stop that? She laughed at me and said she understood and that they get that request a lot. But why is it continuing? And more food companies are going that route. It doesn't make sense.

Re: Food From China

Green Giant vegetables come from China and Smithfield Meat... haven't been able to find good information on other brands. I guess I just have to be more diligent about reading the packages. Except a lot of times the packages are lying or omitting things from us anyway.

The United States also has “country of origin” rules, which require that a label indicate when a product was made or processed in another country. But the rules are complicated. They are overseen by two different federal agencies – Customs and Border Protection or the U.S. Department of Agriculture – depending on the product. And a product has to undergo a “substantial transformation” in another country to require a label that says it comes from there. Peanuts harvested in the United States but sent to China for roasting wouldn’t require a mention on the label because the item doesn’t change into a different product, Scott said.

Smithfield meats still come from the US, although the company is owned by the Chinese.
For now, meat from China is not allowed to be imported into the US.

The distinction there is crazy, but also, do peanuts really have to go all the way to China to be roasted?

I also find it strange that apple juice comes form other countries, when we grow so many apples here.
