I wasn't sure where to post this

has anyone experienced depression linked to pms?

I wouldn't even say depressed but I've noticed that I get very moody, easily agitated, and just sad. its directly related to that time of the month because I don't have these symptoms any other time.

This never happened to me before but only when I started getting my period again after having my DS.

how do you deal with this? treatment? I plan on speaking to my gyno but wanted to see what others thought. thanks.

Re: depression related to pms

YES!
I swear I have PMDD since having DD.
I get so depressed, so irritiable, so cranky a few days before my period.
I cry at the drop of a hat.
I pick fights.
Everything seems so much bigger than it is.
I feel awful.
I feel sad and just so down.

Then the day I get my period, it is like a weight is lifted. I literally feel like a new person. Like a veil comes off.
It's insane.

I am not a fan of hormonal treatments or drugs of any kind. I am looking into vitamins (certain B's are supposed to help) and other natural things.

Google PMDD and they list out the different treatment options- both medical and natural

this is exactly how I feel! your described it perfectly. I find that everything my DH does pisses me off so I'm constantly picking fights. its horrible. but then I just snap out of it when I get my period.

I am also not a fan of taking any drugs. I'm always afraid of side effects. I will do some research and ask my doc about what vitamins to take. Let me know if you find a cure! I hate this!

yes, but I go through phases it would ebb and flow. At time I thought I could just rip someone's head off. Like while food shopping if someone was in my personal space...I wanted to take them down lol and thought I had the power to lol

Last Friday I actually worked from home because I just could not bring myself to get up, dressed and deal with seeing people. It was that bad.
I spent the day in BED, with my laptop, crying on and off. Just lying there crying. Like a nutcase.
I was doing a conference call and almost lost it twice while speaking. I had to really concentrate to not burst into tears in the middle of the call.

So I feel ya.

How is the St John's Wort? Have you taken it long enough to see any results?

ok it's good to know I'm not alone. I really cannot deal with this every month.

I think I'm going to eat ice cream tonight to try and get me through this.

And wine helps too! Just a glass though. Too much has the opposite effect!

I've been going through the same thing and it got much worse after having my daughter. Really bad. I tried really hard not to take medication but I do take Ativan when I need to. I probably only use it about once or twice a month. Other than that, exercise helps and I'm trying to learn more about how nutrition plays into it all.

Any side effects from Ativan? Does it make you loopy or foggy at all?

This was ME!!!!! I finally went and saw my Dr and he told me that he sees it very often in women in their 30's, especially after having children. It's hormonal. It's like the hormonal swing we have in our monthly cycle is stuck in one spot and never swings back up.

He prescribed me 50mg of Zoloft. I was VERY leery of this as I am not one to take anything either. But it worked...like a charm. I started off by cutting the pills in half the first week or so and then went up to the whole pill (it's the tiniest little thing). I've had absolutely no side effects. Have felt like myself again.

I've been on it for about a year and a half now.

No, I don't have any either, and I've had this too. Not every month, but some months. It's gotten 100x worse between like ages 31-33. Can't wait to see what the rest of my thirties has in store.

I'm on a pretty low dose, never went beyond 5mg. It makes me feel calm and relaxed. Definitely doesn't make me loopy. I get a little tired but since I feel calmer I'm able to get going and get on with the day. I know that doesn't make sense but it just takes away that awful feeling. I was concerned about feeling totally out of it, especially if I'm by myself with my daughter, but I guess because I'm on a low dose I really feel ok with it.
Honestly, I only saw a doctor and went the medication route because my husband was really concerned. I think because it definitely got worse as I got older too.

This was me but before I had a child. After pregnancy the whole period thing was a million times better. However these past few months I feel it all creeping back. Including bloating, sore boobs and cramps are getting worse too.

There were times where I swear to god my husband almost got stabbed. Like I am not kidding. I've contemplated if stabbing him was worth the risk of jail or if maybe I could get off on an insanity plea.

This is me 100%. DH will even notice it now because of how I'm acting. It's like everything he says and does bothers me and sometimes it's so irrational. Ugh, it's the worst.

Re: depression related to pms

I had this problem too! It really started to get bad after I turned 40.
My doctor said it happens a lot when women get closer to peri menopause.

He recommended that I take 10 mg of sarafem(prozac) in the two weeks leading up to my period.

It has worked so well! I take it from cycle day 15 until I get my period, and stop the day I start my period.

The other two weeks of the month I don't take it.

No more mood swings, anxiety and crying o ER little things. No more food cravings the week before my period, either!

No side effects, except that I cannot drink alcohol during the time I take it. I get a bad headache. But, if I drink during the other two weeks, it is fine.

Life changer!!

I've been like that since I was 16. I went on a birth control pill with mild hormones and was fine until I went off to have my son. I'm back on the pill trying to get my hormones back in line.

Re: depression related to pms

I'm crazy exactly one week before period, even paranoid 'every one hates me' feelings

I asked Dr about meds but he said I Definetely would not lose weight on them and I'm obese. Is that true?

This thread reminded of Gia Allemand. She must've had a severe form of this. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/gia-allemand-mom-blames-bachelor-star-menstrual-cycle-suicide-article-1.1452221

I'm not alone, thank you all for coming out of the woodwork! I'm 39, and esp after DS was born, it was like Watch Out! Only, it starts about 10 days before my period Chat Icon poor Dh, he doesn't deserve it. I cried at a commercial, at the Wanna Build A Snowman song and a picture of my inlaws at the grand Ole Opry! I couldn't get out of bed on Thursday.
I don't mind taking drugs for it. This can't keep happening month after month...
