Giuliana Rancic: I Know I'm Too Thin

For months, she's stayed mum on the subject of her body, but now, Giuliana Rancic, who says the firestorm of attention has "gotten out of hand," is finally speaking out.

The E! News anchor's slim appearance at the Jan. 11 Golden Globes sent the Internet abuzz with rumors of eating disorders – and worse.

"Some people were saying, 'The cancer is probably back,' " Rancic, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and underwent a double mastectomy that year, tells PEOPLE. "And they were accusing me of every eating disorder. I thought to myself, 'God, if someone really thought I had an eating disorder, what a horrible way to approach it.' "

Thankfully, Rancic, 40, is healthy, though she says the cancer-suppressing medication she has been taking since 2012 has had an effect on her body.

"I started noticing that I was eating a lot, but not gaining weight at all," Rancic says. "I was concerned."

Her oncologist, Dr. Dev Paul of Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers in Denver, Colorado, informed her that the drug, which can alter metabolism, could cause weight loss.

"It's really hurtful," says Rancic of the attention, adding that she had hoped criticism about her appearance would quiet down on its own. "I'm sorry that some people think I'm disgustingly skinny, as they put it, but there's nothing I can do. I'm lucky that I even have the type of cancer that reacts to the medicine."

When it comes to her appetite, "I eat more than any of my friends," she says. "I eat a very robust, healthy, balanced diet and dessert almost every night. I'm not hiding from anything."

Though the mom of son Duke, 2½ (with husband Bill), admits that the physical change has been difficult to bear.

"I look in the mirror and it's hard for me," she admits. "I am really thin. I want to look fit and beautiful and sexy, and I can't."

Speaking out now, Rancic, whose memoir, Going Off Script, hits shelves April 7, hopes the tides will turn.

"I never want my weight to distract people from what I do," she says. "But it is becoming a distraction, [whenever] I wear something sleeveless, show my arms, my back."

In fact, Rancic says a major publication was interested in featuring her but backed out, telling her she was "too skinny."

"That was really hurtful," she says. "I thought, 'Wow, I'm on cancer medication. I'm doing the best that I can.' "

Despite the public backlash, that mindset has served Rancic well.

"I refuse to be broken [by what people say]," she says. "I have so many beautiful things in my life."

And this is why people need to stfu and stop commenting in other peoples bodies. You never know what's causing their gains or losses.

I don't believe her. I hate to say it but I don't. When she was on The View a few years ago (prior to taking any cancer medication, before she had cancer) she said that her doctor told her to gain 5 pounds to help with her chances of getting pregnant and this was extremely hard for her because she wants to fit into a sample size for work. She said that if Rachel Zoe didn't have to gain weight to get pregnant, she shouldn't have to. Eventually she begrudgingly put on the 5 pounds and still couldn't get pregnant, she said. If she was unhappy with how skinny she was, she wouldn't showcase it with sleeveless tops and tight clothing all the time. I think she's been getting so much flack lately she had to come up with a reason other than the truth...which, in my opinion, is that she has an eating disorder.

This makes me feel sad. I always felt she was too thin, but I understand genetics. I have cancer in my family. I have the short genes. and the big thigh genes. No matter how much I exercise or how much or how little I eat- there is only so much you can do to change your body. So much of it is totally out of your control. People should try to be more positive... about everything. We'd be a happier society.

Ironic how she has a book coming out in a week and she now has something to say.

I think she has an eating disorder and this is all a perfect PR timed announcement. A few years ago she blamed it on a super fast metabolism.

I have a very hard time believing this. She has ALWAYS been super super thin bordering sickly looking. Even way before she got cancer.

Well, no one really is to judge. If she has a eating disorder; I'm sure her family/her husband would have intervened already. We dont know her eating habits every day. It could just very well be that she does eat a lot and her body simply burns it off.

I actually think she looks healthier than Kelly Ripa who is equally as thin.

I feel bad for her no matter what the reason is for her weight loss. I don't understand how people can say they think she has an eating disorder just by looking at pictures of her. we don't know anything about how she lives, her health, etc.

No idea if it's true or not. And maybe its a little bit of both.
I just had that she's choosing now to address it. Because it makes it look and sound like she using it as a plug for her book.

This is absurd and scientifically untrue. She is likely taking tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor, neither of which cause weight loss. And if, on the off chance, it did she'd be grade 3/4 anorexia and her treatment would be switched.

I don't like when public figures discuss unfounded medical issues. Granted, she's no Jenny McCarthy or Suzanne Somers but now countless women with breast cancer will call their doctors in fear that their treatment will make them sickly thin. Some might stop taking it, some will refuse to take it, all because this birdbrain is blaming her eating disorder on something that she feels will gain her more sympathy.

and didn't she outwardly admit that her Dr. told her to put ON some weight when she was trying to get PG and she just 'couldn't bring herself to do it' b/c she wanted to fit into a certain dress or something?

No - sorry.

I'm SURE there plenty of people going through treatments who have extremely negative reactions to their medications, and suffer every single day - TRULY - I don't believe, for one second that she's that skinny b/c of her medication.
Only b/c she has ALWAYS been that way - and TRIED to be that way -

I feel horrible that she had cancer and has to be on meds to keep it away.
And it is possible that those meds do cause weight loss.
But she looked like this BEFORE she was even sick.
And she LOVED looking like that. She wanted to look like that. She even admitted it.
So I doubt she is crying over the fact that the meds are keeping her thin, if that is, in fact, the case.

I don't think she was as skinny before as she is now

Yes she has always been skinny but I think she was heavier before

And the whole 5 lb thing for pregnancy is not the missing key to get pregnant when you are dealing with infertility

And I know I am biased bc I like her. I always have

But plenty of other celebs and models and whoever are thin like her and she always gets he shit end of the stick

People rip her to shreds and glorify others
