Dire need of pacifier help!!

DD just turned 2, and she is more attached than ever to her pacifier. Any ideas on how to start eliminating it? She's speech delayed, so it's really important this happens. I don't care if she has it when she sleeps, but she needs to get it out of her mouth during the day.

When I take it away, she screams inconsolably (even if I hide it while she's eating), has made herself throw up more than once. Cutting the tip didn't work. Thoughts? Ideas? Advice? Tia!

Dire need of pacifier help!!

DD was a friggen addict too. It was out of hand honestly. As soon as she turned 3, we said that's it! I prepared her for a week or so, telling her we would be giving all her paci's to the babies at daycare.
I brought out a shoe box one afternoon, and asked her "are you ready to give them to the babies, they really need them, not big girls like you". She surprisingly said yes, gathered them up and we sealed the box. And that was it, just like that. It was very surprising that she was so agreeable.
Would your dd understand doing all that, or is she still too young?

Snip it! My dd was the biggest pacifier addict ever! We kept telling her she was going to get too big and her binkys would break. One day I snipped the end off and let her find it. She put it in her mouth and it fell right out. She said "oh no my binky's broken" and threw it in the garbage. She asked a few times but I kept reminding her that she was too big and the pacifiers were broken.

Eta: my dd was 2.5 when we took it away

Re: Dire need of pacifier help!!

My DD is going to be 2 and is speech delayed also. I wouldn't say she is addicted to it but I am trying to have her use it less and less. Thankfully, when she is distracted me something she doesn't realize she doesn't have it. Can you give her some thing else to distract her when she gets upset for it?
Our speech therapist said it's ok for her to have it if she needs to be soothed. She told us to set a timer and when the timer goes off, to take it away, not sure if my daughter will understand that but it's worth a shot.

I had to do it cold turkey. When DS was two he started chewing on them to the point where it became dangerous. It was one day of hell and then he was fine.

Ughh, idk, going through this with DD as well. She still sleeps with it but if she's really upset she asks for it.

Dire need of pacifier help!!

DS turned 2 in August and I have the same problem. He is extremely attached. We tried snipping it, we tried cold turkey, nothing worked. My SIL is pregnant and due in July. I'm going to tell him in June we have to start getting ready to give all his binky's to the baby and hope it works. He throws huge fits if he can't find his binky.

Re: Dire need of pacifier help!!

Thanks for all the support. Today, every time she wanted something (even if it was me to play with her, or to get her a toy she couldn't reach, etc.) I told her not until she put the paci down. It seemed to work pretty well. I will continue this tomorrow and see how it goes.

2 days ago, right after I listed this question, we were in the diner, and the father of a toddler randomly came up to us and went on and on about how my kid has a paci still, and how he go his kids off of them by 7 mos. I was so irritated!

This! My sister's DD was just as attached as yours. I told her about snipping it and she wasn't sure it was a great idea. I went ahead and snipped one of them (her DH encouraged me to try it) and I gave it to her. She tried to put it in her mouth then examined it and said "binky broken". We all just went with it and were like oh no it's broken. She kept saying fix it, fix it. My sister stuck with it and it was a tough few nights but she felt better by saying it was broken rather than just taking it from her. Funny thing is she completely broke the habit months ago but asked Santa for a new binky because hers broke. Lol! Can't blame the kid for trying.

Whyyyy do strangers feel the need to do this? DS had a paci until just a few months ago, right when he reached 2.5. When he was a little over a year, maybe 16 months, I had a woman tell me I should have taken it away when he was a baby. Um, who asked you?

I don't have much advice because I saw you said cutting off the tip didn't work and that's what I did. I would maybe try and get her to use it less and less so that it's only for when she's sleeping and then try to cut off the tip again and tell her it's broken. GL! It's not easy!

Dire need of pacifier help!!

We cut it off, took it away cold turkey. Nothing worked. She would just cry and not sleep.
She is only 2 sono gave it back. Clearly she isn't ready. I'll try again in a few months

Dire need of pacifier help!!

My ds is 3. It had been driving dh crazy that he still had his binky. I had taken it away briefly when he turned 2 but then he got sick and I felt bad and gave it back. Well, we went to Vermont for Christmas and on our second day, my moms dog got hold of the only binky I brought and chewed it up. I considered buying a new one but then realized what a blessing this was and decided to tough it out. He cried for it the first night, but it has now been 9 days and we are home and binky-free!! He hasn't even asked for it since that first day.
