sleeping with a pacifier

Did anyone see the bit on the news monday about babies falling asleep with pacifiers? They say it lowers the risk of SIDS, although they aren't sure why.

So this leads me to ask - do you put your baby to sleep with a pacifier? Would you be more inclined to now that they say it lowers the SIDS rate?

Re: sleeping with a pacifier

We must be onb the same wave length, I just saw that yesterday too!!! I am now trying to force the pacifier on the baby at night although he hates it and spits it out once he is in deep sleep. My 2nd born still has one at 2 1/2 years old abd I swore NO PACIFIER for my son, but know I want him to take it!! With my first born she never took a pacifier, but I also NEVE worried about SIDS, funny how now at baby #3 I'm so nervous about it.

I only used the pacifier for naps and at night and I took it away at 3 months. After hearing this I think with the next one I will do the same.

Apparently the reason why pacifiers lessen the risk of SIDS is because with a pacifier, the baby doesn't fully fall asleep, because it sends a trigger to the infant to s u ck, rather than to lull his/herself into a deep sleep, which at times cause an infant to stop breathing for periods of time, which can cause SIDS.

Does that make sense?

editted to fix the word s u c k

Re: sleeping with a pacifier

We used to sooth Jared with a pacifier but then when he fell asleep, I would pop it out of his mouth. That thing was bigger than his face when he was born.

Re: sleeping with a pacifier

I hate the pacifier, my sister gives them to her kids and my niece is almost 3 and she still uses it. I just think it looks silly, and Ive heard it doesnt make there teeth come in right. I also heard about SIDS on the news and using the pacifier but that is just one step u can do to prevent it, theres many more....JMO Chat Icon

I used to put Jake to sleep with the pacifier but eventually he didn't need it anymore. He was able to soothe himself. Now we only use it on occasion. I'm not going to get him hooked on it if he doesn't need it or want it because it may help prevent SIDS. If he still wanted it, then yes, fine.

Amber does too..although I agree with the comments about it looking silly on older kids. There was a kid this weekend at Target who had to be over 3 and she had it in her mouth. Ummn, not my thing.

Re: sleeping with a pacifier

My son had one till he was about 2 and broke the habit pretty easily. My daughter never took one and then she had thrush so they were a no no. Truthfully, I dont think I'd push it with a baby who doesn't want one. Good Lord I remember those middle of the night cries where I was crawling around searching for the "mitty" (as he called it) when it fell behind the crib.

Emily never took to the pacifier. I tried when she was smaller, but she had no interest.

Re: sleeping with a pacifier

Juliette didn;t want it when she was younger, but now she takes it at night and naps. I don't mind it at all. If I had a choice between thumb and pacifier, I would take pacifier anyday because you can always get rid of the habit. I know peoples in their 20''s who secretly **** their thumb at night!!!! (seriously!!!)
