Applying to jobs in NYC when you live on LI

Here's a ? for hiring managers as well as applicants.

I live on LI .. Eastern LI.

I've had a few interviews so far (yay!) but each time, it was brought up that I live on LI. NOT in a "can you be here on time?" way, but in more of a conversational way.

I guess I got to thinking. Do hiring managers etc view a potential candidate differently if they have such a commute? I suppose you may not want to answer publicly, so you can fm me.

Or have any LI applicants felt this way?

Or am I just overthinking things and people commute from all over to nyc?

Thanks !

When I first applied for jobs in NYC no one really cared that I lived on LI. I got calls from NYC recruiters/staffing firms often so I guess they didn't care either.

Where I work, hardly anyone is from NY, so half the managers don't even know where LI is.....

I really wouldn't worry about that....I know we're very limited in what we can and can't talk about and I always try to make conversation where I can to help put people at ease.

I work in operations for a museum and definitely take someone's commute into consideration. However, it depends on the position I'm hiring for.

From my personal job applying history (I live on LI and work in NYC) no one has ever commented on my living on LI.

I don't think you are over thinking it.

When I started with the company I work for now, I was just out of college & living with my parents on LI (eastern Nassau.)

The office was near Penn Station at the time. I showed up a few minutes early for my interview, and the interview was generally going well when I was asked about LI.

I was interview by the department head who was from Brooklyn & viewed all of LI as really far. She asked about the town I was from, and say. "oh, that's far out, right" and I politely said, not really, told her how long it took and then emphasized that the previous summer I worked a few blocks away from this office in a full time temp job & it wasn't a problem.

I did get the job, but I wouldn't be surprised if she told her her boss, "I think should could be a good fit, but she lives on LI.)

I think it is more of a concern in a small company where they aren't used to people from all over, but if you have ever been to Grand Central or Penn Station at rush hour, it is clear that many people commute from CT, Westchester, NJ, & LI.

To be fair, I do have the same concerns when hiring people from NJ, but it wouldn't be the deciding factor.

I don't think of someone's commute when hiring them. I do make it clear that they're expected to be in the office (if the job warrants it).

I live in Suffolk and have commuted to the city for about 15 years.

Knowing how committed you need to be to the job to sustain the stress of the commute - I am certainly cognizant if someone applies who lives east of 110. It doesn't necessarily affect my decision, but it does change my dialogue with the candidate. I can get away with it in a commiserating sort of way (at least I think I can).

Good luck.

I think it depends on how far 'out east' you are...If youre in Speonk then I would probably have some concerns. If you are in Ronkonkoma i'd sympathize with your commute but not hold it against you.

Also, it has nothing to do with LI and LIRR. If an applicant applied to a NYC position and lived in South Jersey or Upstate New York. I'd have the same concerns... I think anything over 2 - 2.5 hours is a bit far.

I live in Stony Brook and when I was applying for teaching jobs in Queens I was asked point blank if the commute was going to be an issue for me because I HAD to be on time for the kids every day.

The funny thing is, I was the furthest away of any teacher and I was never, ever late yet the ones who lived the closest to the school, always were. Chat Icon

I interviewed with a large investment firm , and was asked about the commute. They wanted to know how long the train ride was, what town the train station was in, how long it takes back and forth, etc. they were really hung up on the commute. I think you would know during the interview process if they focus on commute time.

I also worked for a large investment bank and lived on Long Island...and I don't remember them ever asking where I lived? Although I pretty much ate every meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at my desk and took a car service home every night, so I don't know if it mattered. lol

This was over summer and 2 of them wrote down my answers about the commute! After last winter, I'm sure they were worried about people commuting. Could be a matter of cost too, they routinely work very late.

I want to say 20% of my company actually lives in the city. The rest of us commute from LI, upstate, NJ, CT and PA. I was asked more about my commute when applying to jobs on LI.

This is true in my office, too. I'm surprised that so many hiring managers know where all these LI towns are. Maybe it's my industry, but I was consistently the only born and raised New Yorker in every department I've worked in until recently (2 others from Queens). When I moved to LI over the summer and mentioned the town not one person on my team knew where I was talking about....including the 2 from Queens.

I am ALWAYS asked about how my commute to the office is on every single interview. I live on SI, which is notorious for having the most unreliable service to the city.
