My almost 9 yo DD wants a sewing machine for her bday. She is asking for a "toy" one that she has seen commercials for (pink etc). I want to get her a "real" one instead. I always wanted to learn how to sew as well. Any recommendations on a basic model for a beginner/child her age?

Just want to add/ask if there are machines out there that are easy to use for someone who is self-teaching?

Singer makes a "real", yet kid-friendly sewing machine. It comes in pink, purple or blue, I think. I think Kmart sells them. It's called the Singer Simple Sewing Machine. Might want to check it out... Let me see if I can figure out how to attach a link, lol...

I would not get a kid's sewing machine.

I prefer the Brother brand. I would not get super simple, as she will want to grow with it. I recommend the Brother Project Runway machines. They are great. Many different digital stitches, easy needle threading and bobbin winding. I've had mine for several years.

My daughter's sewing school camp uses the Brother basic (non digital), and hundreds of girls sew there in the Summer and throughout the year, and they really hold up.

I just got a Brother from Costco - very similar to the Project Runway models. It was the best deal I found and I think it may even be on sale now. I researched a lot before buying and from what I read, Singer is not what it used to be. I sewed when I was younger but haven't for years so I wanted a machine that would be easy.

Re: Sewing machine

I have my own children's handmade clothing line, Sewing Seeds and just got my daughter this Janome. I do agree with the recommendations for Brother. I learned on a Brother cS6000i and it was great.

For those who might be interested, I will be offering children's (and adult!) sewing lessons and birthday parties beginning in early 2015.

I wish I could rent a sewing machine.

I have a project I'd like to complete and it would take just a day. I don't want to buy one for just 4 hours of sewing.

I checked Rent-A-Center but no luck.

Call Sew Chateau or Little Miss Sew It All. They both teach sewing classes, so they might let you rent one.
