If people would stop listening to their idiot doctors on parenting advice, there would be a lot more INSTINCTIVE, attached parenting and less detached, selfish parenting. Why is your baby's (general, directed at no one in particular) needs for comfort, closeness and food completely disregarded at night? Why is it that parents feel they can just flip a switch and your parenting duties are done at bedtime? I will never understand this. There are studies that it produces long term psychological damage in some infants. Also, it is proven that CIO creates a huge surge in stress hormones, that stick around even hours after baby falls asleep. IF IT FEELS WRONG, IT IS WRONG! And if your baby screamng for comfort and food doesn't feel wrong to you, I think that's just crazy and sick.
Honestly, this response is so uncalled for. I know you weren't directing this specifically to me, but I found it offensive. I didn't go to my doctor for parenting advice. I spoke to him because I am a paranoid FTM and I was concerned that the constant interrupted sleep wasn't good for my son. Also, I don't think anyone believes that parenting ends at bedtime- at least I don't. However, just because a person becomes a mom does not mean that they stopped being a wife or even a person with their own needs. I honestly don't think I could do CIO and I believe those studies that discuss the harmful effects, but there are also numerous studies that attribute lack of sleep to a higher risk of maternal depression and marital troubles. We all want what is best for our babies and many of us first timers are clueless and in need of support and advice. There is a way to offer that advice without calling people names or judging people who may agree with you.

And although I really didn't have the stomach for full on CIO (and hence didn't sleep for almost a year), my doctor is most certainly not an IDIOT. Way to generalize. Nor am I a selfish parent for needing some sanity in my life.

Maybe organicmama is just a bit flustered like I am, when our parenting choices are questioned by pediatricians and we are treated like we are damaging our children. I was admonished by my pediatrician for co-sleeping, not crying it out and told that there's no nutritive value in extended breastfeeding. Not to mention the judgment I get from others when I tell them I practice any of the above.
The bottom line is none of us want to harm our kids and only want what's best for them.

Re: When you disagree on C.I.O.
Nobody should be judged!
I am so sick of the I do my parenting this way so it's the best movement
All I see everywhere is why this is best and parent like this and don't do that and so on and so on
The respect you deserve for not wanting to CIO or co sleep or attachment parenting.well the mom who does the opposite deserves the same respect
And that comment was not respectful

I agree with what you said and your ped is wrong for making you feel that way
But the other end gets judgement too for not breast feeding or for CIO
And her response was full of it
There were many who said CIO was not for them, nobody went where she went

When you disagree on C.I.O.
they're only babies for a little while. Soon they'll be too big to want snuggles and moving out. Do what's in your heart.

So you don't want to be judged and I'm sure Organicmama doesn't but it was She was so ready to judge others on here. If you don't want to be judged please refrain from judging others.
Personally I do not care one bit what someone does with their child. Feed formula and processed food or feed them BM and organic , sleep with them let them sleep in the crib from, hold them 24 hrs a day or let them cry I could care less just don't judge others.

lmaooo gina i am aligned with lcherian, my previous ped absolutely judged me and derided me for my attachment-like parenting decisions so i do hold some contempt for him and other peds like him. also i think this whole thing with the jassey brothers is bringing up more crap. but on the internet, i prefer to state what worked for our family and open it up for discussion.

Oh please. This group is the most hypocritical group of women I've ever seen in my life. Don't judge? I've seen it from almost every single one of you women (the regular, vocal posters of LIF especially. I've seen it on the FHF, parenting, celebrity board, relationships. I don't care what you feed your child, where they sleep, what they wear, but I will absolutely judge someone that let's their kid scream until they puke all over themselves, ams then put them back in their crib for more, or if they are doing something I deem extremely harmful or scarring to a child. I'm judged by everyone because I choose to practice AP, I EBF, extended RF, co-sleep, etc. as for the pediatrician comment, do your research on how to parent. Listen to your gut. Pediatricians are MEDICAL DOCTORS. What makes them the authority on parenting?

2 wrongs don't make a right... unless you think they do in which case, we disagree again.

I've actually never heard of the extinction method - just did a quick Google... looks like a newer method and it doesn't look like it would be for me. That being said American Academy of Sleep Medicine said all methods of "sleep training" are great as long as there is consitancy.
Lets educate... not judge (I'm looking at you OrganicMama!).

Lets educate... not judge (I'm looking at you OrganicMama!). Yes, what I think organicmama was referring to is the extinction CIO method where you let the baby cry with out comfort until he or she stops. The Ferber method is a gradual extinction method where you provide comfort while letting the child cry in incremental time periods

Yes, many people practice the method of just letting the kid cry with no comfort. This is what I've had many "well meaning" friends and family recommend to me. "It only took us 3 nights. The first she cried for an hour, the second 45 mins, the 3rd was 15 mins,, the 4th she didn't even bother".

I DON'T VACCINATE MY KIDS.
Let's see who doesn't pass judgement on that.
Like I said, hypocrites.
My point is, when someone feels another person is doing something harmful to a child, it's normal to judge. It just happens. At least I own it.

Funny story, in my early days of motherhood, our pediatrician shared with us her success with "flown blown let them scream" method. She went on about how it took hours the first night and how the children threw up ect...my husband started asking her more questions and the Dr. answered them, she then added "not my business but I can tell your wife may divorce you before she ever allows this method to be applied to your son, don't say I didn't warn you." I'm glad she was able to read my body language so well!

FTR - that is not how CIO works... take your own advice and do some research. Actually, that is exactly how many people practice CIO, extinction style.
Lets educate... not judge (I'm looking at you OrganicMama!).
I DON'T VACCINATE MY KIDS.
Let's see who doesn't pass judgement on that.
Like I said, hypocrites.
Oh the horror! Worst... mom... ever!
Are your kids happy, healthy and well-cared for? Then that's all that matters... all road lead to Rome. Different paths are different, not wrong.

I'm sorry if I ever judged
I didn't know commenting that Kanye west wears too much leather is equal to your style of parenting is wrong
