Keeping toddler from falling off couch?

My DD is finally tall enough to squirm up onto the couch. She does know how to get down, but she keeps standing & rolling around on the couch. She would have fallen many times if I wasn't there to stop it. We are trying to teach her to just sit. How do you keep LO's off the couch or keep them from getting hurt?

If they sit nicely they can stay. If they are running, they are taken off with a warning of a time out. If they go back up and run they get a timeout. They still do it but not as much. I'm diligent with time outs for it b/c they fall off ALL the time.

We didn't. He fell off a bunch of time. Never got more than a bump.

I just always told her over and over that we sit down when we're on the couch. And I sat right next to her Chat Icon Chat Icon
Don't get me wrong, she jumps on the couch, climbs on it, etc. But, 9 out of 10 times, she'll sit right down.

This
A huge pet peeve of mine is when kids come to my house and run jump etc on my couch! My 9 year old nephew does it all the time ...I can be sitting on it and he wi run behind you etc it drives me InSANE
I teach my kids a couch is for sitting or laying
If they can't follow that hey have to get off!
It takes work in the beginning but worth it in the end

OMG Id shove him off lol

My kids fall face first off the couch often. We have a sectional and they misjudge the bend. Or they wrestle on it. Or stand on it to rip my blinds and curtains down. LOL They never learn.

Thanks everyone. We are trying to teach her to only sit or lay down. It's hard for her to resist standing though. DD fell today trying to get up. She only made it half way and tumbled off. It didn't deter her though. Thirty seconds of cuddles and she was trying to climb up again.

We taight him to slide off on his belly. We have a room that is one step down so we had to teach him this to get down the step. Now he applies it to the couch and (grrrr) when he climbs the train table and wants to get down

I'm trying to teach dd this. She's getting it now. I also agree with if they sit they can stay if not off they go. We've had plenty of bumps and bruises from the couch and she still doesn't sit all the time. It is getting better but it takes time.
