I can't believe how sensitive people are getting over this topic. I LOVE animals! Especially dogs, but if I don't feel comfortable around a big dog, small yappy dog, etc... yes, I would ask a friend if they could put the dog in another room. My LO comes first.
Something can happen. Not just looking out for my LO, but for the animal as well. My IL's dog bit my son once. He was a baby and sitting up at the time just flapping his arms around and babbling. Their dog (who isn't a big dog) just freaked a bit and bit him. He wasn't doing anything to the dog. I do watch my children and make sure they won't hurt animals, but I'm looking out for both the animal and my child. I don't want to sit at a playdate the entire time on top of my kid to make sure he doesn't grab the dog or the dog come to him and growl.
Yes, your animal is your family. I get it, but you don't take them out in public for everything. They can get locked in the house, a room or a crate for a time. You obviously don't do that to your children.
Maybe all your friends and family members are fine with the dogs now in your life, but your child will one day meet a new friend that could have a fear of dogs. Are you not going to allow your LO to have their friend over bc of this?
I don't think I'm being sensitive. It's not even that I'm offended. It's just the way my house works. I don't crate my dog, ever.don't even have a crate. If my kid wanted a friend over and their friend was scared of dogs, they could easily play in her bedroom or in the play room, where the dog doesn't usually go. I guess the way my house is set up there are plenty of places that my dog just doesn't really go, but I'm not going to lock him out of the areas that he's most comfortable. So if they wanted to watch a movie, sorry, my dog will likely be on the couch. They could watch in my bedroom or on an ipad. I guess all of this is to say there is always a solution. If you're scared of dogs, tell the host you're scared and let him/her come up with a solution that you are comfortable with, but don't expect to dictate the way it is handled if you want to go over.
I get it. Believe me I understand. I had a small older dog that was getting blind. He was sweet, but as he got older he was starting to bite if he didn't know the smell or felt threatened when he wasn't. I had to put him in another room when people were over.
I am just saying I am just as concerned about the animal as the child bc kids who aren't around animals don't know how to behave around them. They can hurt the dog not meaning to and the dog could react bc he felt threatened.

I would not hesitate to go.
Pitbulls are wonderful animals - like all animals.
A family member had one growing up that I was very close with. She was a warm, loving, and beautiful dog.

I love my dogs but would never get offended if someone wanted them away. But it doesn't come to that, I would never leave my dog out for a playdate bc I know many are uncomfortable with dogs (and also my dogs actually can't be trusted).
My dogs are destructive when locked up and hate it, may bark, but leaving them out just isn't an option. I don't care pit or small dog, it must be kept in mind that many are just not comfortable around dogs.
