Pit Bull and play dates?

What are your thoughts on going over someone's house with your 13month dd for a play date and they have a pit bull?!

I know some of them are really sweet, etc etc. But I don't think I I'm comfortable with it. I know dd doesn't even like big dogs like that and I think she would be terrified. Unless maybe they keep the dog in another room. Ugh.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Just curious.

UPDATE: I said something and the dog won't be there tomorrow. Phew. Otherwise I wouldn't have gone.

I wouldn't feel comfortable and wouldn't go. I'm not a big dog person and DH would probably think I was being silly since he grew up with a dog and loves them. I've found since having a DC, I don 't have to justify myself. If I'm uncomfortable, it's not happening. I recently turned down a friend's one year old's birthday at the beach because DH was out of town and I wasn't comfortable going with her myself. I really wanted another pair of eyes and hands, esp since I'm pregnant. DH was urging me to go but I knew it would be tough so we skipped it and when DH returns, we'll take her.

Pit Bull and play dates?

Regardless of the breed, if you are uncomfortable with a dog around your child then tell the host. I have a dog and have no issue putting the dog in a different room when people come over if they are not "dog" people. Personally, even though my dog is super sweet, I'd prefer him to be away from the kids because you never know what could happen when the dog is around unfamiliar people. It has nothing to do with breeds.

I personally wouldn't hesitate to go. BUT we have a dog and DD LOVES all dogs. Saki has knocked DD over a few times and she just laughs and giggles at her.
Given the information you provided, I can understand why you are skeptical. You know your DD and her hesitation around big dogs. Go with your gut!!!

PS. I can't even see you write 13 months... I know it's real but it's just not fair!!! it goes too fast. Chat Icon

I know this may sound judgmental but I would not go. I just have a fear of pitbulls. I know that's an unfair statement and I don't mean to offend anyone, I just would not feel comfortable bringing my daughter to a house with a Pitbull.

Re: Pit Bull and play dates?

No, I would not go unless the dog was crated. It's not even about them biting, any dog can jump up and knock a little guy down, or scratch. Plus sometimes children are aggressive towards dogs, and the dogs react.

I wouldn't go. All dogs make me a little nervous, Pitt bulls especially make me incredibly nervous.

I would pass or recommend meeting somewhere. Recently a friend of our family's daughter was attacked by her friends pit bull. She's lucky to be alive and had to have multiple surgeries.

Re: Pit Bull and play dates?

i owned a pitbull when i was younger.
my mother was pregnant when i was 12. my parents were very worried after hearing horror stories about pitbulls. they were very worried when my brother was born, and honestly- best babysitter i have ever seen.

the torture my brother put that poor dog through. pulled on her tail, her mouth, even her tongue. climbed all over her. she just quietly sat there and let him do whatever. when he was an infant, before baby monitors, if he woke up and my mom did not hear him, she would run and get her. literally ran back and forth between the crib and wherever my mother was to come check on him. even when he wasn't crying.

i get why you would be afraid. something i always found to be true: it's not the dog you should be afraid of, it's how the owner raised/trained them. dogs follow their masters. if you have a "bad" human, you'll have a "bad" dog and vice versa.

Pit Bull and play dates?

I would go, I don't see what a Pit has anything to do with it.If I see a big dog I ask if it's friendly regardless of size and even then I still have my kid stay away until I can asses the demeanor of the dog.

We had a big boxer who all the kids in my family would stay away from and a little terror Chihuahua who all the kids would try to pet. This little ***** bit every one of the kids.

My point is I don't trust any animals because I don't know how they were raised but it won't stop me from visiting a house.

If you don't go then don't go because it's a dog not because a pit.

A tiny dog can attack also and is just as likely to do so.

In reality pit bulls are very good with kids and great family dogs unlike other breeds

I don't understand why people take issue- the Op is uncomfortable with Pit Bulls around her kid. This isn't about pit bill discrimination, if the OP is uncomfortable, she shouldn't go.

I happen to feel the same way. I don't care if that's unfair to Pitt bulls or their owners, I do not allow my kids near them or other dogs that could rip their faces off.

Re: Pit Bull and play dates?

I have a pit bull that my daughter literally lays on top of to watch TV, has tea parties with, dresses up, etc. But it's my dog, so it's different. When I have children at my house, the dogs are gated in another part of the house, regardless of the parents comfort level. The breed doesn't matter, to me, a dog is an animal and you just never know. Better safe than sorry. I trust my pit bull much more than my "friendly breed" dog.

Friends have a collie that I won't even let her pet because it's so nasty. I do exactly what you did, voice my concern and no one has ever had an issue keeping their dog separated from the children.

As much as I hate breed discrimination, you can't put your children in a situation you are not comfortable with. As a pit bull owner, I can understand that while a pit may not be more likely to bite than other breeds (they were originally bred as nannies for small children while parents were away from the home), if they do bite, it's going to do a lot more damage than a small dog, as any large dog would.

Agree with this! I have 2 pit bulls and I lock them in another room when we have company. Whether there are children coming over or not. I have family that wont put their dogs in another room when my children come over knowing i do not like their dogs in my kids faces. Anything can happen. My child can pull on a tail or an ear and that dog can snap. But they think their dog is the best and would never hurt a fly. Needless to say we do not go there often.

this. don't go because you are afraid of the dog not because its a pit bull. we have one and he is the sweetest (and annoying ... he whines like the biggest baby when people come in) dog.

I cant stand when people/companies discriminate against a breed. ANY dog can be vicious.

I keep my dogs away or outside when people are over just because they are annoying and don't stop bothering everyone.

Re: Pit Bull and play dates?

I agree with the other posters - go because you are afraid of the dog not bc it's a pit. I have three pitbulls and they have never attacked anyone. When people come over I usually put them outside or in their crates - not because their pits - but because they tend to jump and can knock someone over. My dad has a border collie and has attacked people on numerous occasions. If you're that uncomfortable you can always ask her to put the dog away while you are there.

Re: Pit Bull and play dates?

I don't get the "don't go b/c you're afraid of the dog, not b/c it's a Pit Bull" thing .........

I have an 8 lb Yorkie. I am totally and completely aware of the fact that my dog is equally capable of biting/attacking anyone as any dog, any breed, any ANIMAL -

HOWEVER, although I love dogs, and love big dogs, I'm STILL nervous around a dog that is capable of biting through my arm if he DOES bite, as opposed to the dog that weighs 8 lbs .........

I would avoid telling your friend you doin't want to to go b/f of the dog. People get very offended and upset - Why don't you suggest she come to your house, or meet at a park, etc instead?

Thank you.

I told my friend dd is afraid of big dogs, which is true. She said the dog wouldn't be there today so don't worry. She completely understood and wasn't offended at all, but by this post I can see how people are easily offended.

Pit Bull and play dates?

For me, personally, if a friend was coming over for a play date and asked me to lock up my dog, I would either say we could meet somewhere else, or they could play in my kid's bedroom, where the dog doesn't go. I wouldn't lock up my dog...I don't for any guests. I wouldn't be mad. I know some people are afraid of dogs for whatever reason. But I won't "punish" my dog for someone else's fear either.

I don't think it's a punishment, it's just being considerate of the people you welcome into your home. I think a good dog/cat owner wouldn't have a problem putting their dog elsewhere in the home if it meant that their guests felt more comfortable. I've had to do it with my own dog and she's a harmless mushball but I've had family/friends over that have dog issues for one reason or another and I'm considerate of that.

I deplore cats, I've NEVER had a good experience with one, and my friend has a particularly cranky, bratty cat and I've had to ask her to keep the cat away from me when I'm over and she didn't have any problem with it. I was especially leery of the cat when my DD was a baby and I just felt better knowing the cat was in another room.

I think if you ask someone nicely and explain your issue most people will be accommodating and considerate in the situation.

That is ridiculous. It's not punishing your dog. It's making your guests feel comfortable. Dogs are animals, not humans.

Pit Bull and play dates?

I feel like the oddest mom. LOL I never think about this stuff.
My family cousins all have pitbulls We just go. They say they are safe and well trained. Do I keep an eye on her, of course. She was terrified of that dog which oddly made the dog even MORE anxious to play with AJ.

The dog kept trying so hard that the owner told her "pillow" and she walked off all defeated and sat on her pillow. I felt so bad. AJ was surprised. It took a lil time but she finally got comfortable around the dog (by time I mean within the hour). These days she totally forgets the dog is there and only jumps when the dog barks or tries to put her paws on AJ.

I think AJ likes dogs from a distance. LOL

If I went to a play date or whatever and a dog was unruly I'd hold AJ or put her up high and subtly ask if the dog could go to another room.

So far though, no such need.

REGARDLESS of breed.

She's flipped at a blood hound and a wiener dog! a dog is just a dog. All have teeth and nails and all can cause injury. All are fast, all are able to get to a kid if they wanted to. All dogs are also trainable and capable of being good dogs as much as bad.
