Stairs question/any pediatric PTs?
As a disclaimer one of my children has cp so I am a bit if a milestone nut when it comes to my other kids. I have a 25.5 month old (24 adjusted) and was just wondering if he was where he was supposed to be. He has been on target for everything and at 2 can jump, run, get up through half kneel, climb playground ladders. But while he is capable of climbing the stairs with one hand on the rail (slowly) or even climbing an entire flight with no hands if he is holding something, he seems to prefer walking up with two hands on the rail or putting his hands briefly on each stair in front of him. He is shorter than average do t know if that has anything to do with it. Because he is a preemie he is seen by a developmental ped every 6 months who evaluate for muscle tone and as far as I know everything is fine.
Am I being totally crazy? Looking for reassurance :) I know at this age they are supposed to navigate stairs independent which I would presume to mean without support. Thanks!

My DD is exactly the same age and also still puts her hands on the step in front of her, unless she's holding my hand or if I remind her to use the railing. Even then, it's a struggle for her. She can do the step in front of our house independently though. She also doesn't jump with both feet off the floor, and the PT at my school said that's okay until 2 1/2 years. I'm interested in the responses to this thread though, because I have a few mild PT and OT concerns, but I don't think DD will qualify for EI.

Thanks for responding - makes me feel better. It's so weird cause yesterday he was holding a toy he didn't want to give up and he walked up about ten stairs without any support. Then today he was using both hands on the rail, or on the step in front of him. I wish I could get my innocence back because I am sure I would have thought nothing of this years ago!

Stairs question/any pediatric PTs?
DD is 27 months and just tested out of PT. I remember she got the full 2 points for stairs on her eval which I was surprised by bc she struggles to go up holding the rail. She's especially shaky going down and if there's nothing to hold she gets creative crawling down looking like she's about to fall on her head. It sounds like your LO is doing more than fine.
We were at the playground recently with a friend and her daughter who is a month or two younger than mine and runs circles around DD. I was a little surprised to see her use her hands going up the steps at stairs. I asked bc it's an area where I can't tell how behind DD is and she said it's still a struggle for them too. It made me feel a little better and just goes to show that every kid is different with when they master each skill.

Thanks so much, makes me feel much better. I feel like i really don't see very many 24 months old who are totally proficient at stair climbing. I am surprised that that is apparently typical? But anyway thanks so much :)

Sometimes I think it just has to do with the child's own comfort level and sense of stability, and then it also becomes habit. My daughter has been going down the steps holding on to the railing since she was 16 months, when most kids are backing down, yet she still hasn't mastered going up. I truly think it's habit and comfort that makes her touch the step in front of her. She is up and down just about everything on the big playground though, so I know she has the strength to do it when she wants.
