Why does my 13 month old still wake up at night?

It's not a HUGE deal, but it is frustrating that nearly every night my almost 13 month old wakes to to nurse and has done so her whole life, obviously. I kind of thought by 1 she would have stopped. My DD 1 slept through the night much earlier than this. I've tried just going in with the pacifier, soothing without nursing, even crying it out, but eventually her crying wins out and I just nurse. When I do, it's easy and she nurses for 10 minutes or less and goes right back to sleep. At this point I don't think I even have much milk to give her, and she may just want to nurse for the comfort of it. Am I going to be doing this til she's in kindergarten? Any thoughts on why this is happening and how I can get her to sleep straight through? I don't want to deny her the comfort she wants but I also don't want to keep waking up at night

I'd try CIO without going in. At 13 months she definitely doesn't need the milk at night.

There was just a similar post by someone else. I found that once I stopped nursing during the day (I pumped and bottle fed) it was almost that day, she slept thru the night. the doctor said to soothe her but not touch her during the night and get her back to sleep but that took me over an hour and a half and still didn't work. the next day no nursing, just bottles, and she slept thru the night. thinking back to my older daughter, she slept thru the night when I stopped nursing also.

are you still nursing during the day?

Its habit. And you have to break the habit. Personally I would do CIO. It should only take a few nights.

STTN is a developmental milestone and shes not there yet. You can do CIO, but don't have to! You only need to break the habit if you want it to end. Chat Icon

It doesn't sound like its bothering you as much as you "think" she should be STTN

My situation was a little different because I pulled DD into bed with me when she woke up and you may not want to start that. She also did not use a pacifier too often so i was really able to take advantage of that. At 13 months I spent about three nights pulling her into bed and snuggling with her while giving her the pacifier. She wined for about 10 minutes the first night, maybe 3 minutes the next night, and after that she was fine.

We had the same issue with DD I had to hold strong and u fight the urge to give in and nurse. It was definitely for comfort. I think we did the rubbing on the back no nurse then just CIO. It was about three days and it got better but I have to say she is 2 now and she still gets up in the night for comfort or just to check we are still around. Good luck its hard.

My DD will be 1 on Monday and she still wakes in the middle of the nigth sometimes. I have found that if DH goes in to soothe her she will go back to sleep right away. If I go in, she wants to nurse. But like you said, it usually only takes 10 min and then she's sound asleep again. Some nights its more exhausting than others, but CIO is not for me, so I deal with it. She'll eventually outgrow it.
