Flying Question
Last time I flew with my son he was 18 months and we treated him as a lap infant. I know it is not recommended to check your carseat, but I am flying alone with him this time, and it's only a one way flight (my parents will bring us back.) With flying alone I can't imagine, carrying all of that stuff and wrangling him. If I check the carseat, he can sit in a regular seat right?

I would check the carseat. We have checked them a few times and all was good.

Yes he can sit in a regular seat. If you want him to be strapped in better, look into a CARES harness. I think they have to be about 25 lbs to use it.

Flying Question
I have always checked my car seat and it has been fine. I have had him in the seat with the lap belt since he turned 2. He has always been fine.

Yes, they will be fine on a normal, uneventful flight. Which fortunately most are.
But in the event of severe turbulence your child will be much safer in a more secure harness. A small body can be flung out of their seat pretty easily.

Thanks everyone! This is a last minute decision (just a flight from here to Baltimore). My car needs to be serviced and we don't have time before the trip. I will look into that harness too. I will be a wreck regardless

If you have to check your car seat, I think you're better off gate checking it if possible. I've seen videos of handlers just tossing car seats onto the conveyor belt and while they look fine, they were actually damaged.
Is it possible to buy a cheap car seat at your destination?

I know, it's our spare seat, but still I know... I'll look into that too.
