NICU moms, donor breast milk?

Anyone have any experience or knowledge about using donor breast milk?
My son was born 8 weeks premature. He is in NICU.
I am pumping. But at the rate they are increasing his feedings, he will surpass my supply.
The doctors mentioned using donated breast milk. They said formula wouldn't be the best option. I have not had time to research all this yet.
It apparently goes thru rigorous testing and is ultra pasteurized.
Any one have any experience with this?

The only donor bm i know of is getting it through friends or through Eats of Feets or Human Milk for Human Babies, so it is not pasteurized. From what I understand, there is no donor bank in NY. What do the doctors recommend? I know many NICUs prefer that it is pasteurized.

eta from a quick google search i found one bank that is allowed to accept/give out donations in ny but i'd check with your nicu first to make sure it is reputable.

Is there any hope of increasing your supply or will that still not be enough? My supply was established by this point but I found oatmeal to be helpful in boosting my production. There are other things that can help too but I'm not familiar with them and not sure this is realistic given your situation. I have also only seen websites with unpasteurized milk. Good luck and hope your son is doing well.

I am sorry that you are having a hard time :( I am surprised to hear the hospital is taking a hard line on breast milk. I had 34 weekers and no way was I producing enough bm...they took what I had and supplemented and everyone thrived. Sorry that doesn't really answer your q. Good luck and hope the donor route works out!

I am surprised too. DS was born at 28 weeks and although they encouraged pumping and BM, I was never able to produce enough. He was on formula from the beginning and got BM only intermittently.
I looked into donor BM then but was unable to find anything. But this was almost 3 years ago.

I didn't use donated BM - but I donated it. It was a rigorous process - there were blood tests on a regular basis and I had to get paperwork filled out not only by my doctor but also my DD's doctor. The analyzed any medications I was taking - and wouldn't use the milk if I was taking anything. Even the pre-natal vitamins which I continued to take had to be analyzed. It was incredibly strict in terms of how the milk was stored, what temperature it had to be, what the dates were that I pumpled - along with my daughter's age - so they could match it up (apparently milk changes depending on the age of your baby). It actually was A LOT of work to be able to donate it. I don't think all donation places are the same though - but I imagine at a hospital they are only taking it from very screened sources.

ETA: My DD was born at 32 weeks, 5 days. Sounds like your litle one is eating well - and that's a great sign!

I had a 32 weeker & like others produced what I could. When I could not keep up with his increasing feedings, they supplemented with formula & filled in with the bm when I gave more.

I agree I was a 34 seeker and he was small which is why they induced me early .. I'm surprised and angry a doctor would say that. You don't need this added stress right now. Breasts milk is great but so is formula. I know nothing about donor breast milk.

Good luck to you and congrats on the little one

Re: NICU moms, donor breast milk?

I just gave birth to 28w twins. I pumped for 2 months and once I could not keep up they supplemented with donor milk until closer to discharge when they weighed more and then they moved to formula. I only did a little research. My twins were very very tiny and all I read the risk of NEC infection was so much less when getting breast milk so based on that and trusting the nicu doctors I did it. Pm me any questions. The hospital handles it all- u do not need to find the donor milk banka

I would definitely give donor milk over formula. Breastmilk is like medication for premature infants because their gut is immature and puts them at higher risk for infection. I would continue to pump and supplement with donor milk as needed.
Make sure you do lots of skin to skin/kangaroo care and pump next to your baby! Also make sure you're eating/drinking enough and taking care of yourself.
Good luck! Hope his NICU stay is quick and uneventful.

To donate to a hospital they do every test imaginable. I would 100% do it.

My daughter was 8 weeks premature as well. My supply wasn't great to start and it was never enough. We supplemented with Neosure and they never suggested that I do anything else. My supply did increase when she came home and was nursing. Good luck
