Latest studies on vaccine risk (pro-vaccine article)

Thought I'd spice some things up on the boards today...Vaccine Article

Very interesting to see the actual risks for each type (and how rare and minor they are). And that getting multiple vaccines at once can lower risk for leukemia!

Love this Dr's take on food and playdates being more dangerous Chat Icon

So I guess the thousands of parents whose children have been injured by vaccines are imagining things?

By the way, my kids are vaccinated.

I don't think the vaccine debate is so black and white.

Re: Latest studies on vaccine risk (pro-vaccine article)

Best part of the article:

"While it's certainly good to know what the one-in-a-million risks are, if you are going to truly worry about those you should pack your child in a bubble right now -- because the risks of playdates, playgrounds, going to school and taking most medications (as well as eating most foods) are higher. In saying that, I don't mean to sound disrespectful of parents who worry about the rare risks of vaccines. It's just that as a doctor, it's frustrating to me when people only look at vaccines that way, vaccines that could keep their child and others from getting sick, and don't pick apart the risks of everything else in their child's life. And the illnesses vaccines prevent have risks that are much higher than one in a million, an important point that often gets lost."

Yes, I suppose that is exactly what the study is inferring. New week, new study, same results.. the benefit of vaccines to children and society as a whole far outweigh the risks. This doesn't deny that there are cases where children have had adverse affects (perhaps, even as you're saying, thousands) but it's such a small percentage.

Again, I know I won't change anyone's beliefs, just put this out there for anyone seeking some fresh pro-vaccine propaganda. I know I enjoy. Chat Icon

I'd like to add, since I'm still on my soap box, I truly believe the next generation will say to their parents "what?? why didn't people vaccinate? Playboy model? huh?" just like we say "we sat in the front seat as 4 year olds and you left us in the car while you ran into 7-11 for milk?"

Exactly. It isn't saying no one has been injured from vaccinating. It's saying the benefits FAR outweigh the small chance that something might happen.

Exactly. There is a risk with everything. Taking an Advil can have a side effect. Vitamins. ANYTHING.
Walking around, driving, swimming, flying- the list goes on.
Life is full of risks.

Re: Latest studies on vaccine risk (pro-vaccine article)

This, however, does not address any long term negative affects, which would probably be incredibly difficult to pinpoint anyway.

But I think that for many, myself included (although I do vaccinate at a slower pace), the concern is over what all those chemicals are doing to these young bodies. Is it really okay to pump such young infants full of dangerous substances? Does it even matter if you wait a few months or a year? Who knows, but I'd rather wait a little in the hopes that it helps, since as my ped told me it's also extremely rare to even catch one of the diseases that we vaccinate for.

Yes, there's never been a long term study conducted on the health outcomes of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated children as it applies to the current CDC schedule. I find that somewhat troubling. Not sure how feasible it is, but it's still an unknown.

The reason why it is rare for someone to catch those disease is because the majority of the population is vaccinated, which protects the unvaccinated or under-vaccinated (herd immunity). With fewer people getting vaccinated, however, herd immunity is reduced making people more likely to get those diseases.

Re: chemicals, I'm more worried about the American Cheese my DD eats on a semi-regular basis than I am about the 1/8 ounce of preservative she receives in a vial of very VERY beneficial vaccine.

And like someone else said, they're only extremely rare because of herd immunity.

And mumps and whooping cough are at the highest rates in decades. Bc people aren't vaccinating. Diseases are literally coming back.

If a ped told me this I would get a new one. The REASON why it is rare is because our generation is all vaccinated against these diseases. It is really obtuse to say this.

I think that this article was very informative

You will likely NEVER see a long term controlled study of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated children-There is no way an institution review board will give permission for a large scale longitudinal study of unvaccinated children since withholding (or delaying) vaccines is contraindicated by the CDC and AAP.

As for the incidence of the diseases we vaccinate for being low--that is a result of vaccinations as others have stated. All medications have a risk of side effects BUT the benefits often outweigh the side effects.
