Speech at 14 months?

My daughter is 14 mos. and I'm concerned about her expressive language. She seems to understand a lot of what we say, but she doesn't say much other than the occasional "mama" "dada". Mostly she will babble some random sounds.

What should I be expecting at this point?

I have 14 month old twins and they seem the same as your daughter. I was wondering if they should say more as well.

My youngest was not saying much at 14 months. Now at 21 months she is using 3/4 word sentences.

Thank you for the replies. Makes me feel a little bit better. Everyone I talk to seems to think I expect too much from her for her age. Lol

my DD only said Mama, Dada and Elmo at that age and very inconsistently. Now at 2 she doesn't stop talking LOL. I think you LO is fine.

I work in the field of developmental disabilities. At this point 14 months is normal if by 16 months she has not added more to her vocabulary I would bring it up to her doctor. She should be at around 50 words or so (give or take) in her vocabulary by 18 months. If you are concerned the biggest tip for developing vocabulary that I can give at this age is read- read 3 books (or the same story 3 times aloud) through the day morning/ evening etc- this WILL add to the vocabulary and she will eventually pick it up. Or music or audio books are great too just for listening. I wouldn't be concerned yet though.

As long as she's comprehending what you say, I think at this age you're alright. If it hasn't changed in a few months, I would bring it up to your ped.

DS will be 14 months next week and only says HI! Dada. Mama. and makes different sounds to indicate things (truck sounds, dog sounds, grunting and pointing towards Cheerios). I'm not concerned at all, I think this is developmentally appropriate?

Totally normal. My DD was about the same at that age. She *maybe* had 5 words or so. By 18 months, she had a lot of words and now at 24 months, she's speaks in 3-5 word sentences.

That's how my dd was. At 18 months she def had only 5-10 words. But she could understand everything I said to her. And then it happened... At 23 months, she essentially had a word explosion and her vocab increased soooo much. Now at 25m, she is stringing together 4-5 word sentences

Basically, don't worry at 14m. It's very early!!!

DD is 16 months and at her 15 month check up I brought up that she really wasn't talking much but that she understands what you say. The doctor said at this age their receptive language is more important than expressive and some babies are just late talkers. I spoke to a few speech therapists from work and they said the same. She still doesn't say many words but babbles like crazy and totally understands what you say. We will see by 18 months what happens.

DS#1 said only mama at 17 months. I had him tested at 18m and they told me he was fine. He is now 5 and never stops talking. I would not worry at 14m.

My 13 month old doesnt really say anything. He says "ca" for cat and some other approximations I dont even count. He does however understand everything we say so im not concerned. My older son was similar and now he doesnt stop talking.

At that age my DS really didn't say more than mama, dada, baba and babbling. He's 19 months now and many more words and is able to express himself better.

My one DD was the say way. She started saying more words at about 15/16 mo. Now at 20 mo, she has a ton of words and understands everything. I never really worried about her b/c she understood things.
