Early Intervention - 9 mo's, Gross Motor Skills. What to Expect?
My DS is not crawling or pulling himself up. He will roll, but only from stomach to back...and will not roll all over the room. Doc said I should call EI to get him evaluated. I called this morning and my call went to voicemail.
Do you know how long it typically takes to get an appt? What should I expect when they come? And ultimately, did you feel this helped your DC?

Yes this was us. Starting at 4mos ped said dd had a flat spot on her head. She was such a sleeper and hated tummy time so I took her to a private pt who suggested an evaluation w the state. They evaluated her just shy of 9mos and she qualified. She had 6mos of treatment and it helped so much! She learned to crawl a few days shy of 11mos which kept her in the "normal" range. 5 weeks later she was walking! She learned so much, little things like the proper way to get down off a couch or bed. I really think the exercises gave her confidence (she's not the most adventurous little girl) and at 22mos she's great! I lovedddd the pt, and she loved him too. It was fun for her. She had pt 2x a week. Once w me at our house and that other day at daycare. I think she would have figured it all out on her own eventually but this helped her do everything the "right" way. Early Intervention - 9 mo's, Gross Motor Skills. What to Expect?
DD qualified at 13 months and just tested out a year later. It helped her a ton! She wasn't rolling (although she had a little when she was younger), didn't push up on all fours or crawl, didn't pull up or get to sitting without help but she would sit or cruise all day once you helped her get in position. They got straight to the root of why she wasn't progressing and after one session she could get up to sitting from her belly. A few months later she was getting up and down on her own and walking. We did twice a week for the first 6 months and then once a week plus a mommy and me group which she loved and helped a ton.
We're in suffolk. We got the appointment quickly, went to the county office to fill out paperwork (I think in nassau they come to you for that) and then maybe a week later she had her evaluation. We had a PT come along with a special ed teacher who tested other areas. They gave me tips right then to start doing and told me she would qualify. We went back to the county office after another week or so to write out her plan and go over everything. I think her therapy started two weeks after that. GL!

Thank you! When she was 9 mo's were you concerned about the crawling, getting into sitting position, etc? My doc wants me to call EI now, but some other people have given me the opinion to wait until 11 months to see if he progresses on his own. Im going to call now, but just wondering what your thought was on that.

I don't think at 9 months I was that concerned. DD was just weird in that she was advanced at some things and behind with others. She could sit unassisted before 5 months, stood early, cruised at 9 months, but there were a lot of pieces missing some of which I didn't even realize. By a year I was concerned but the ped actually wanted me to wait another 3 months to evaluate and I did it anyway. I think they had a hard time grasping what she did/didn't do. They see her cruising around the office but not all the things she couldn't do. Even on their checklists she often didn't score too low but when she was first evaluated she was at the first percentile so clearly the checklists weren't providing a good picture.
If you have her evaluated now and she doesn't qualify, at least you can get some info on how she's doing and ask for tips on what you can do to help her on your own. You can always reevaluate in six months and if you really push, they will do it sooner from what I was told at the county.

One more thought, since DD was a little older, they really had a tough time teaching her to crawl. I do wish I'd started sooner and that she hadn't skipped crawling almost completely. I always read that it's not a big deal to skip crawling but once we started with the therapist, she told me that not crawling can lead to fine motor difficulties down the road. They don't develop the strong hand muscles they should and that's something I definitely worry about.

my DS has been getting PT for gross motor delays since about 4 months old. he had (and still does) a flat head, always laid on his back, didn't roll, didn't play with objects the way he should've been, etc. i honestly can't say enough about how great the PT has been for him! he is now almost 11 months old and he started crawling at 9 months and a few weeks later started pulling up. he is constantly in motion now (and getting into trouble lol). he just started trying to cruise and i wouldn't be surprised if he walked in a couple of months.
once your LO is evaluated and qualified for services, your coordinator will have 30 days to get services in place (it's usually much less than this). i found the process a bit tedious in the beginning but it's been totally worth it to see my son's progress. good luck and feel free to FM me if you ever want to chat!
