Edited with Update: blood in stool...milk allergy
So, my 6 week old twins have had blood in their stool since Tuesday. We are assuming it's a milk protein allergy as they have all the other symptoms: loose and foul smelling stools, spit up, gas, etc. Ped. Put them on Nutramigen Thursday morning. There is still blood in the diaper and in one baby, it seems to be getting worse. This baby also has not finished a bottle since the formula change (will only take 2 oz. As opposed to typical 4 oz.)
How long does it take to see a change in stools on Nutramigen? It's been almost 3 days now. Is the milk based formula still in their system or is this formula not agreeing with them?
UPDATE: Okay, we're on Day 6 with Nutramigen. Gas seems much better in one baby, There is still blood in their stools and their stomachs looks bloated to me. Ped. said on Friday (when I called) that the blood can be there for a few weeks after the switch. However, there stools are still extremely loose and foul smelling. Is that still normal? How long does it take for the stools to physically change? I am calling again tomorrow to see what the ped. recommends.

It can take up to 2-3 weeks for the intestines to heal from an allergy. Try and wait it out a little bit more, if no difference in a week, you may have to go to Elecare or another prescription formula. We went through 5 before we found Elecare...

This, exactly. Stomach takes a little while to heal. But don't wait toooo long. We ended up on neocate, she was a different baby about 2 weeks after the switch.

blood in stool...milk allergy
My ped gave it about 4 days and then switched DS to neocate. I don't know if they take other factors into account (he cried all the time and they saw him in the office like that). He had the reflux pretty bad also.
Eta Nutramigen is still milk based I believe. It's just broken down more. My DS is almost 3 and still cannot have cows milk.

I think it can take longer- at least a week and a half. Some babies need Elecare which is super hypoallergenic.
