Anyone's child every had the molluscum virus?

How long did it last? Did you do anything that seemed to help curb it or get rid of it?

DD got her first bump a few months ago, which turned to two, and then a whole bunch were starting before we knew what it was. Now that the weather is warm, I stress about the fact that I can't keep it covered (most are on her belly but she has a few on her arm). Did you worry about taking your child to activities or playdates and the possibility of spreading it? Her ped basically just said not to worry about it but of course if someone caught it from her I would feel terrible.

DD got it when she was about 18 months. What a PIA virus!!!!!! They would come and go for at least 6 months. It took like a good 6 months before I didn't see any of them any more. I use to put apple cider vinegar on them. Not sure if it helped a lot but I think they would disappear faster.

Someone I know had to get them burned off her kids. It's highly contagious, I believe all of her kids ended up with it. I would not take her to play play places until it's gone.

My ds had and it was a pain! We would think it was gone and another would pop up. Probably lasted around 6 months. One got infected and we went to the derm and they prescribed a cream that sped along the drying up.

YES and it is SUCH A PAIN!!!!!!

our little guy has had it since AUGUST!!! started with a bump or 2-- pediatrician said dont worry about it , it will go away on its own, theres nothing much you can do about it anyway.....

so now he has several.

we've read that you can burn them off, and that there is an over the counter cream but that it burns when you apply it, and we also read about apple cider vinegar, which seems to sting. We've been putting the vinegar on a cotton ball and scotch taping the band aid to his skin. ghetto, yes, but my 4 year old refuses to let me use band aids.

The vinegar definitely dries them out but im sure it stings at least a little.

And supposedly, water makes them 'breed' more.... so our little guy has only had super fast baths with No water in the tub; just the handheld to wash his hair, and only use a washcloth on his face, hands and feet, to reduce the chance of them breaking onto the washcloth and spreading.

Laundry constantly- i used to have him wear a shirt maybe twice a week, but now i just throw everything in the wash at the end of every day

So annoying

because the bumps are under his arm and a little bit on his torso, its not noticeable. im pretty sure that its only contagious if you scratch them and then share, which he cant do because of where they are.

good luck with getting rid of it - its so annoying- i wish we read about the vinegar when there was only a few bumps back in august....

OMG! I never even heard of it until my son got it last year. None of my other two caught it. ACtually my daughter had a few bumps on her but they went away fairly quickly. Our Dr told us is was bug bites so i thought i had bed bugs or something, i was freaking out. It wasn't until my friends daughter was diagnosed with it that i looked it up and realized that was exactly what my son had. It took about 2 months for his to go away.

My DD has it. She's had it for over year. They're mostly on her back. Like a PP said, it started with just 3, then another (DH said maybe they're like rings on a tree since she went from 3yo to 4 when we first saw it ). Now she has over 20! The ped said not to worry unless she gets more than 20, so I brought her to a derm when they got to be more. Derm said to do nothing. Said the treatment to get rid of them would be too tough for her, as she'd have to remain perfectly still to do it...which is NOT happening with her. He said they will eventually go away, but could take up to 2 years! I've noticed that some of them have gone away as others have surfaced. I was not told to limit her baths. And DD#1 bathes with her all the time and she has never gotten it. BUT, the night before Easter, one got infected (I guess it lifted a bit and bacteria got in under it) and we ended up having to be admitted to the hospital for IV antibiotics. It was SO BAD!!! She was in so much pain from it. So now, I'm super diligent about checking them and covering them if they lift a bit. I can't wait til its gone. I'm very worried about the summer, since I won't be able to keep it all covered with a onesie.

ETA: somebody told me to try putting black nail polish on each one to try to get rid of them. Haven't done this yet, but am getting close to trying it.

My daughter's lasted about a year. She started with a few around Easter last year. Over the winter it got really bad. Mostly on her upper arms, inner legs and tush. Some were really gross. They'd look really bad before they would dry up. They finally went away this past April!!!

If it makes you feel better - I am a family of 5 and no one else got them (well my husband who bathes her every day has 1-2 on his arm that may be but we aren't 100% it is that and he won't see a dr.) I know so many people who's kids have it - not much you can do! My dr said leave them alone as things/creams/ etc can make it worse. I did read apple cider vinegar helps dry them up but I never tried it.

Thanks everyone. I'll cover them when she's going to be around other kids with short sleeves. It's just annoying that not even the first one she got is going away yet. Definitely giving the apple cider vinegar a try though. DH just used that on something on the bottom of his foot and it worked great. Hopefully it helps move things along.
