Re: Mother's day problems

Since my mom passed away before we were married, usually every mothers day we do something with DH family (and his sister's MIL) -go to either his parents or sisters house or we go to a park/nursery or something for a picnic and to pick out plants (I don't garden but MIL/SIL and SIL's MIL do.)

Mother's day problems

We do brunch with my MIL so I can have the rest of the day to myself. My mom is in FL so I don't see her.

Re: Mother's day problems

Having lost my own mom recently I want to just do my own thing but it's not fair to DH so we go out with his family. It helps that I love my MIL so it's not a big deal.

Christmas is another story. We spend it with my ILs and my husband's sister's in-laws. My family ALWAYS gets shafted. I want to host so I can invite EVERYONE. Her in-laws, my family, in-laws' in-laws, etc. Sorry for the hijack.

Mother's day problems

nope - we never see MIL. we attempted to make plans with her a few years ago and she said sure come over for a bbq (she didnt want to drive to us) so we did. well it ended up meaning we picked up all the groceries, DH did the bbq-ing, and us cleaning up. the next year we invited her over and she declined (not wanting to drive again) when she told us to go to her, we declined. ever since then we never include her for mothers day.

we celebrate with my mother on saturday and on sunday is my day with dh and the LO

Re: Mother's day problems

haha nope no problems
I will remind my hubby to call his mother and she's always good about saying "Tell Veronica happy mother's day too" and they will talk for 5-10mins then done.

My mother, last mother's day gift I gave her was over 2 decades ago. See no reason to change that.

When my father was alive, I'd call my step mother for a hot second and feign something came up to get off the phone. I'll probably drop the whore a voicemail just so she can't boil about how ungrateful I am blah blah. Ironically, cause I KNOW she won't expect me to. She HATES I'm the most mindful of the set. She finds it insulting that I am always first to call. Love it!

Me? I'm not my husband's mother. I got myself a guitar case and capo for my own mother's day present.

I hate holidays that put so much pressure on family. Can't we just be glad to be with each other and happy?

I for some unknown strange and crazy reason always want mother's day to be about being a Mom, not about taking a break from being mom or being appreciated for it.

I am a FMTW. I want a day in a year when I can finally do whatever I want as a mom with my kiddo. THAT is what mother's day is for me. That day we can eat ice cream together, giggle, paint each other's nails, let her do my hair, go to her favorite park... just be Mommy and Me.

Re: Mother's day problems

Not really, as much as I would love to be with my mom and sister on Mother's Day, we alternate Mother's day and Father's day every year. It works out.

Re: Mother's day problems

Yes.... and last year, my first mothers day was a mess and I ended up in tears that night. So this year I told DH, I want to see his mom and my mom and I didn't want to host after last years disaster and since it was mothers day and I am a mom, I want to have dinner with my family and we would do breakfast with his (and BIL and SIL offered to host or else MIL would have). My sister invited his family to join us as well, so the ball is in their court with that, but they will likely decline.

I wanted to be fair but I also wanted to not be stressed.

Re: Mother's day problems

We are planning on seeing MIL friday for dinner, just I'll see my mom on sat (DH works) & we'll spend 1/2 of Sunday ourselves (DH will have to work again other 1/2 of sunday).

Can you do something like that instead of trying to make everyone happy Sunday?

We celebrate with my family (brunch at my extended family's house) and MIL comes. For Father's Day, we do the same - A BBQ at my parent's house and FIL comes.

Mother's day problems

We always see both my mom and my MIL for Mother's Day. Sometimes we'll do lunch with my mom then dinner with MIL, and other times (like this year, for example), we'look all be together. When my grandma is up for it, she comes too some years. Personally, I can't imagine not seeing my mom for Mother's Day, and I would never expect my husband not to see his mom. As long as they are living, I want to celebrate with them. If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be a mother to my 3 amazing children.

Re: Mother's day problems

I'm not looking forward to it. I'd love for it to be a day alone with my DH and DS but was suckered into family stuff at my parents house that day. Ultimately someone in my family will end up arguing and the day will be ruined. Chat Icon

Mother's day problems

We are celebrating everyone at once. DH is an only child and my sister is not married so it makes it easy.

Mother's day problems

No, because I have no choice but to go to my in laws. (My mom lives far away). I hate it, but I have no choice.
...though to be fair, we spend father's day w/DH's relatives too and he hates that as well!
