Random- anyone in nyc very late last night

and had to take the lirr home? My friend called me this morning so upset bc her Dh got home at 5:00am (he was out with friends and she figured he would be home by 1:00 or 2:00am the latest). Plus he never called or texted but when he got home he said there were no trains running and the first one available was at 4:29am. and that he sat in Penn for a couple of hours waiting. I checked the schedule for her and it looks like their are plenty of trains that run between the hours of around 1:00 and 4:00am. She's thinking he's lying so I was just curious if anyone knows about this? Thanks!

It depends on which branch he was on. I know that there are sometimes long lapses late at night.

Yup depends on the line, I know for Babylon there's a 2-something train and then there isn't another one till after 5am.

She can easily check the train schedule online.

However I know if you miss the 2:30 train (or somewhere around there) on the Port Jeff line you're basically screwed for 2 hours.

Wow, if she thinks he's lying I'd be concerned about what other issues are going on.

He doesn't go out anymore really, but DH has plenty of stories from when he was younger and missing the last train.

Plus isn't there construction and such on some weekends?

If he got to Penn after 1:55 there's a very good chance that he had to wait. I've missed the last train on my line plenty of times and ended up taking a cab home because the next train won't be until after 4.

However, it doesn't excuse the fact that he didn't call or text her to let her know what was going on. I hope for your friend that he isn't lying and everything works out!

I get the alerts. There were not any issues so he is either lying or got caught in the time period where there are the large gaps in the schedule.

If you checked the schedule online then I think you know your answer. Yes, there are gaps in trains but usually between 1-3am. I would think he was lying.

I always make sure to get to the station around 1-130 bc otherwise you can be stuck there til 4. And that last train before the gap is always mobbed and full of drunks. Hate it!

I haven't been out late in the city in years but I do remember there being a BIG gap if you missed the Babylon train. I don't remember the exact times but it was something like if you missed the 2am train there wasn't another until 5am or so. I missed that 2am on several occasions and was SO upset to be sitting in Penn waiting when all I wanted to do was climb into my bed!

He very well may not be lying but I'd be very curious as to why he wouldn't call or text her to say what happened.

If the train he took was at 4:29 and he got home at 5, than he is close enough to take a cab home....

What station was he going to? I know for huntington if you miss a 1 something the next train is usually a 4 something. Could totally be true.

I have missed that last train. Waiting at Penn until the morning is no fun, but somehow as a teenager/college student you made due.

When I lived in Queens and rode the Port Washington line I recall missing a train and deciding to take the subway (which luckily was an option for me) because there was a really long wait till the next one ran. I don't recall exact times but I know the train I missed was after midnight. So it's possible.

Trains are few and far between during those hours, but I would have expected a text letting me know he had just missed the train and the next one is not for a couple of hours.

So true about the PW line. My friend who lived there missed her train and would have been stuck at Penn for over 2 hours til the next one. She took the Babylon line with us and we drove her to PW.

if he missed the train he should have sent a text or called. From past experience with an ex, he never "missed the train."
however, the schedule is online and she can check it
