Our gigantic son - anyone else in the same boat?!!

Our son is huge - not really "chubby" or "baby fat" because he is SO long. So, he weighs a lot but because he is so tall it really merits the weight.

He is seven months old. He weighs 28.5 lbs. and is 34 inches long!

I have friends with two and three year olds who are this size

So, I'm wondering - am I alone? Anyone have a long and lean or just overall very large baby? Also, it's hard because the stuff that is ideal for his age, he either weighs too much for or is too tall for. The stuff that fits his size, he's too young for developmentally. So, he's in a quagmire! I can't find him a walker or a swing or anything like that because the max weight I have seen is 25 lbs. Then, the stuff that would work for him size-wise, he would need to be walking for.

I mean, he's just seven months old so clearly cannot walk and it's an undertaking lifting and carrying him! It's just ironic because I was the littlest thing pregnant - barely showed, only put on fifteen pounds and he weighed 7 lbs. 2 oz. at birth. People used to say all the time wow is everything OK? You are so tiny and wow only seven pounds, he's a peanut - meanwhile, he's GINORMOUS now!!!! It's just so ironic!! I can't get over it! The pediatrician actually called med school students in to see how "off the chart" his height is. He was born at just under 21 inches long and is now 34 -- so he grew 13 inches in freaking seven months!!!!

Any suggestions on walkers?? Any type of swing or activity apparatus that can support him?? Right now the only thing he has is an excersaucer that he is really too tall for

I need ideas - this poor baby wants to do things!

You have a BIG baby! My kid was also off the charts (how can someone be over 100%, I have to ask???), but not that big!
I struggled with the same issues, but as he was a little smaller, not quite as badly. At that age, I still put him in the exersaucer, even though he was too big for it (I figured the weight restriction was probably an under estimate). He didn't spend that much time in it. He was too big for jumpers, and I didn't have a swing.
He spend quite a bit of time on the floor. Not sure if your son would like that (my older DS decidedly did not!) He also sat in the baby bjorn bouncer-- both my kid and yours exceed the weight limit, but the manufacturer says "It is not dangerous to exceed the recommended maximum weight for a position, but the bouncing function will not work as well." so I went with it. They have toy bars for it.
How about some good toys for the high chair? Like the ones that suction cup themselves to the tray?
Meanwhile, hang in there! He will be walking before you know it.

This is expensive, but might be worth it. I'm sure you can sell it on craigslist or a buy/sell group after to recoup some of the cost.

First of all, your son is adorable! But yes he is the same height as my 2 1/2 DS. LOL

Have you tried the Baby Einstein Jumperoo? My DS was always too small for that, even at the lowest setting.

I have a different issue, I had an average height 22 month old who didnt walk. He was also too tall for most walkers. I used the Melissa and Doug shopping cart as a push toy:walker. Its sturdy and the wheels pivot and his PTs actually thought it was great. It moves faster than a typical push toy, but if you use it on carpet or a play mat that slows it down.

Eta or you can weigh it down by putting weights in te basket part. That's what we did. My son is 34 inches tall and it's the perfect height for him. It on the mielissa and Doug website.

I would stick with the exersaucer for now. It will help build his leg strength.

My son was very large, and never really used the walker. My daughter used it for a little while. But even when she was using it, it seemed too low to the ground and her legs were bent.

I agree with the pp about getting suction toys for the high chair. It will keep him contained and busy.

As for the clothes, don't stress about the size (doesn't seem like you are, just surprised!!). Anyone who has a big child knows that the size is just a number and to buy what fits! My kids could never wear those snug fit cotton pajamas from Carters, and some brands of regular clothes are just cut too slim for them. And hello Stride Rite! They are the only good store that sells W and XW shoes!!

Im on the opposite end, my son is so darn tiny. Im hoping one day for a growth spurt.

I have 2 of those....still today at 6 and 3 when people ask their age I get...OMG they are big for their age. They no longer have baby fat but they are taller than the average kid their age.

The weight thing is hard, DS1 was 30lbs at 1yo and 40lbs at 2yo. He did FINALLY slow down as he is about 57lbs at 6yo. But it used to kill my back.

We used a basic walker from BRU, its like 30 and it white with a blue bear pattern on the seat. He LOVED it. DS2 used a jumperoo that I borrrowed from a friend.

I was lucky because both my boys walked at 10-11 months so I got a break!

ETA: I just looked my oldest Ds was 31inches at 11months so your DS is even taller.

Both of my kids were big babies, but the younger one slimmed out a lot once he started walking. He's 20 months old and tall and long (33 inches and weighs 32 lbs). There is nothing wrong with a big baby unless theres a risk of obesity. He'll stretch out! Enjoy your chunky monkey!

He's huge and so cute!!! Get a foam playmat for the floor and rotate him between the highchair, exersaucer, playmat and the fisher price infant to toddler rocker. I wouldn't even bother with a walker or jumperoo at this point. Keep him on the floor and work on all the gross motor development mile stones that will be coming in shortly. Before you know it he will be transitioning from seated positions and laying down and getting into quadruped, crawling and pulling up to stand.

Do you have a music table or a musical gym? You can adjust it so he can sit and play with it and when he gets older he can stand and play with it.

No help because my 3 year old DD was just 36 inches tall! LOL However like the others I had to chime in because he is just sooo cute.

I'm in the exact opposite situation. I was just actually looking up growth charts and was getting upset about how small my DD is.

I wish my DD was bigger, but I can see your frustration. Hopefully you can find some cool toys for him!

Yes, DD is tall and lean. I lost weight PG, she was born 6 lbs 11 oz and now at almost 3 people are always assuming she's 5. Even my ped reminds me at her appointments to make sure people know she's only 2 because they will expect more from her than she's capable.

He's cute ! Here is another idea, same as a pp but maybe a teeny bit cheaper.

My son only used a jumperoo and walker each for max two weeks. He outgrew height for both. But it slowed down after a bit.

That is something I can definitely understand! At 6 months DS was 21lbs and 28 inches. He's 7 months now and I can't help but wonder how much he weighs now.

My DS spends a lot of time on the floor. He's been army crawling since 5 months and really enjoys exploring and playing on the floor. I just can't carry him a lot bc he's heavy! I feel bad sometimes bc I don't carry him more but I'm not exactly big either and so my arms really feel it.

Your DS should eventually start to level off. My 1st DS was similar in size to my 2nd DS and his growth started slowinig down his 3rd year. Now he's 90th %ile weight and height is 80th.
