Mom's who commute to NYC

I commute from LI to Harlem via LIRR and the subway everyday for the last 12 years. I only hated it towards the end of my pregnancy (but that was mostly due to people on the subway not offering me a seat). I get annoyed by crowded trains, rude people, etc... But I hate driving on highways, etc... And this is a lot easier for me.

I love working in NYC. I live on a great train line though and it only takes me 35 minutes to get to Penn.

I wouldn't say I love the LIRR, but when it's running smoothly, I don'tbmind it. I've come to appreciate my downtime on the train, I read, I day dream, I make lists...

Besides the money (and the fact that my job doesnt exist on LI) I just like getting into the city and interacting with people who are not from LI. I find it refreshing.

it all depends on you really -
I don't mind it at all ........but I LOVE what the city brings.
I love the energy of the city, I love having to be formally dressed for work, I love my walk to from the office every day through the city. -

The ONLY plus I can see to working on Long Island is possibly being able to get to my kids sooner in case of an emergency - because honestly, unless I work 5 miles from my house, I'd have at least a 45 min commute sitting in traffic from Massapequa ......so I'd have to drag my kids out of bed around the same time anyway (I take a 7:15 train now and get into the office at 8:30)
I would take the LIRR over driving to work, sitting in LI traffic ANY day!

If you're 'eh' about the city in general, then it will probably be a chore for you. Most of my friends/family hate it. I really don't mind it at all -

Personally I found it exhausting, and worse if you have small children waiting for you at home. The commuting seems like such a waste of time, especially coming home. Are you working now? If so I would skip. If not working and need a job, then of course go on interview.

I used to work in the city a few years ago, before I had DS. Jobs do pay more in NYC, but it would be a longer day for me... even though it does take me 40 min to drive to work. I would have a 12 plus hour day factoring in commute when I worked in the city... (would take a 6:56am train to the city in the AM, home by 7:15ish in the evening). Now with my commute its more like 10 hours (leave around 8, home by 545). I don't know that I'd be able to do it now, but if the money is a factor then that is something to consider. Good luck!

I commuted to the city before I had DS. I took the train from Wantagh... I'd catch a 7:20 train and get to work about 8:30 on a good day, but I worked downtown. Leaving work at about 5:30, I'd be lucky to catch the 6:05, but usually it was the 6:20. No matter what, I was out of the house for 12-13 hours per day.

I found a job near home and now am out of the house from about 8:30-5:45 daily. Yes, money is more in the city - but for me, it wasn't enough of a difference to justify 3 extra hours away from DS everyday.

I'd go on the interview, especially if I needed a new job - but just really think of how a typical day will be with your commute.

I commute from Bellmore to east 42nd Street and I hate (almost) every second of it.

If I could get by on an LI salary I would but that's not possible right now so I'm stuck.

I would trade my time commuting for time home with the family any day.

It's a lot to consider. GL!

I commute by car 1 1/2 each way! Ughhhh I HATE IT!!! So think of me to remind urself that it could be worse lol! I work in a terrible part of BK, but I make decent pay and it pays the bills. Good luck on ur interview!! U get used to the commute.
