I side with you, J.

I would have been really pissed if someone gave my 2yo DS wine without asking me. I think wine is one of those things that should be cleared with the parent first. I can see how others would disagree, but it would have upset me. Doing it again after you explicitly said no? COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE and there is absolutely no excuse.

I am very particular about language and would have also been pissed about someone dropping the F-bomb in front of my son, but the difference is it was in the heat of the moment of a very infuriating situation where you were 100% in the right and where I think slipping is excusable so as long as my DS didnt start repeating you I would have let it slide. JMO.

Sorry you were put in that position.

Edit: I would have been pissed at the f-bomb being dropped in front of my 2yo who loves to copy people, not that it was at Passover. Although again I would think under the circumstances it was excused.

I would not have been pissed but I am super laid back about things.

You have a right to be upset but I do think dropping the f bomb at Seder dinner was probably a bit much.

I cannot even with this... really? It's NOT about what her DS was given. It's about the fact that his MOM said DON'T do that, and they still did. If this was an allergy issue would you still be saying that cursing was "a bit much"? There's a difference between being laid back enough to give your kid wine (for the record that isn't the part that bothered me) and being completely and totally disrespected as a parent.

If you want to say you are sorry for cursing, you can but it is not necessary. I can't tell you how many times I bit my tongue in a situation like that and I really should not have, so I sort of think you should just let your statement hang out there. Plus, the one time I opened my mouth, my apology meant nothing. I had totally given in by apologizing but I was vilified anyway. I should not have wasted my breath. Let everyone get over it on their own and maybe they will remember who the parent is next time.

I'm too upset to write whole story but at passover dinner a family member gave my almost 2yr old son a sip of passover wine. Everyone thought it was cute bc he wanted more. I bit my tongue and just said please no more. 5 minutes later he did it again before I could stop him and everyone laughed again and I got so upset before I could stop myself I said " its not f'ing funny" the real f bomb. So now everyone is upset at me for cussing during the dinner even though they said I have the right to be upset that its not a big deal and I over reacted. Feedback please. I don't know if I am justified that I wasn't listened to

OMG! OMG! I haven't read the other responses yet but good for you for making your point! I would have done the same exact thing. Your kid, your rules! I probably would've threw a few more curses around, grabbed my kid and stormed out. My heart is racing for you! Really sucks that you and DC had to go through this!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd be furious and so would my husband.

I think cursing was warranted, because being polite was ignored. Sometimes that's the only way to get certain people to listen.

If you felt compelled to apologize, then apologize for offending people with that word, but I'd still hold my ground on what I said and why.

Exactly this! Sometimes being nice gets you nowhere. If nothing else comes out of this situation, at least people will know that you are serious when it comes to your kid. Good job for standing up for yourself and your baby! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Laid back as someone might be about their kids, giving them alcohol and disrespecting your authority as the child's parent are NOT things I would be laid back about. I would have freaked the heck out and I consider myself a laid back parent.

not cool at all

you responded completely appropriately and should not have to apologize for dropping the F bomb. In fact, if you do, it becomes more about you saying something 'wrong' than about the person who ignored your wishes in the first place

i consider us fairly laid back parents also, and i would never give my 2 yr old ds any sip of alcohol or any other drink i don't want him thinking he can have in the future.
he knows that we drink 'mommy and daddy drinks' that he can't have. not cute at all!

ITA. It wouldn't have bothered me but even if it did, I would have never cursed at a family dinner.

I would not be angry that they gave him a sip of wine, but I am more laid back than most when it comes to my kids. But you are his mother and you have every right to day NO WAY. I would have been livid that I was not listened to the first time, regardless of what they were doing.

This.
The sips of wine wouldn't bother me and yes, I am also extremely laid back when it comes to my DD.
What would bother me was them not respecting my wishes.
That would infuriate me.

I agree with this. No one should be giving your child ANYTHING without asking, and once you said no, to go ahead and do it is completely disrespectful! I would have been livid. I would not have cursed, because it's not in my nature in front of my child and family, but I would have been pissed.

FTR, my DD was sitting on DH's lap and staring at the 4th cup of wine with her mouth wide open, trying to drink it. My DH gave her a tiny sip, and I had no problem with it, but would have had a huge problem with anyone doing it against my wishes. The amount that he gave her was barely enough to wet her lips, just to taste. Definitely not going to have any impact on her brain development!

ETA: The kiddush wine is part of a religious ritual, and many kids participate in it with grape juice. My DD rarely drinks juice, but is aware of it and thought that that's what it was anyhow. I would never let her taste any other kind of wine or alcohol.

Re: wwyd? someone gave my 2yr old sips of wine

you are justified about feeling ignored.

however, my experience has been that when it comes to your kids, your rules don't apply to other (especially older generation) relatives.

i started wwIII with my MIL over my DS. she now mostly listens. he spends very friday with her. my new policy is not to ask questions. i know she does things i don't approve of but as long as he's ok, i let it go.

my own father has fights with me weekly over what DS can and cannot have. (i don't appreciate him giving him candy at 8 pm as we are leaving to go home. my dad thinks the candy will not affect his sleep at all. daily argument.)
my dad has told me multiple times, HIS house, HIS rules, my being the mother does not matter in the least.

that's what grandparents (and great aunt, great uncles, etc) do. you can try to fight it. from what i've seen, you'll lose.

The blatant lack of respect for you as a parent trumps any sip of wine he was given. I don't blame you for cursing... dinner table or not it's your child, it's your rules. Period!
