Don't know what to do to help my 6 week old
To start does not have a milk protein allergy. He is on similac advanced and takes 4-5 oz 5 times a day.
I would say about half of his feedings are normal but the other half is torture. He has been screaming like he's starving, take a few sips and then scream in pain. I burp him all while he is screaming and usually get a burp out. I give him more bottle and same thing happens after 30 seconds.
He never spits up but you can hear and feel the gurgling in his belly. My heart is breaking. My boy is hungry and cant eat. I'm in tears as I write this. Going to call the ped tmrw to try and get some answers but would love to hear if any of you experienced this and what it was and what worked.

Definitely sounds like silent reflux. My son went through it and we ended up giving him medicine (drawing a blank on the name) twice a day for awhile. It definitely helped. Good luck!

I agree. Def sounds like silent reflux. Both of my girls had it. Emerson was on Zantac and nutramigen and it worked wonders for her. Peyton was on axid and nutramigen and she was a totally different baby.

I am not sure if this will help bc my DD was only on Similac for 3 days, but DD had stomach issues on it and we were told to switch to Similac Sensitive. That seemed to help the last day she needed formula.

Definitely sounds like silent reflux. Both my children have it (DD who is 3.5 months has it now, DS had it when he was that young as well).
We give DD Zantac twice a day and she is on Alimentum. We also use the Playtex Ventaire bottles and keep them up when feeding and after each feeding for 20 minutes or more. DS was the same. It has helped DD tremendously. She is a total different baby from a few months ago...it was worse at 6 weeks.
There is a big growth spurt from 6-8 weeks that just made her a miserable baby :( She cried throughout her feedings and then for two hours after. It was always random...so we never knew how each feeding was going to go.
Zantac takes two weeks for it to truly work but you will see a difference within a day or two. It will get better. Also Alimentum works best for both our kids. We've tried so many different formula as between the both of them...I cringe when I think of all the money we wasted, but it was for a good reason so I guess it really doesn't matter.
Good luck - things start turning after '8 weeks..everything starts to get better.

I wouldn't rush to put him on meds if possible. That should be a last resort unless the ped thinks it's absolutely necessary.
I would also suggest trying a new formula. Now that I know what I know, Enfamil and Similac are just not something I could give a baby in good conscience, but I definitely have a different opinion when it comes to formula. I wish DS could have been BF longer, so if he had to be on formula, I can't trust the other brands.

what's the problem with enfamil/similac? did i miss something? My kids have been on them with zero issues

We loved the ventaire bottles because it prevent air from being swallowed. I also put gas drops in each bottle. And if she still seemed to have trouble I used gripe water. Gentle formula and gas drops were amazing!

i disagree.
Unless you have dealt with a newborn who has had acid reflux, stating that you would not rush to put them on meds is premature.
They are suffering and in a lot of pain.
What do you know about Enafamil and Similiac that could not give them to a baby in good conscience?

I think all babies have a little reflux since their muscles are so immature. We also used the rock n play to keep her upright which I think helped. Upright during feedings... ventair bottles also help with this.

Thank you for all the replies. I am going to start the sensitive formula today, give it a week and if it is still bad go to dr and ask aboit silent reflux. I have no problems with similac formula (advanved or sensitive) so I will not be switching from that unless it is the drs advice. Thank you to those that helped

I had a similar experience with my ds and switched from similac advanced to sensitive and it worked like a charm- no issues since.

Exactly. Watching them take 2 sips and then scream for 30 seconds then take another 2 sips and scream some more all while you know they are starving is horrible to watch and to keep putting them through. Plus my dr. told me that the longer it goes on untreated the longer the medicine will take to work because it will have to heal before it can actually prevent it.

You know whats worse, knowing your child is in agony and you would rather watch that then give the meds that would make them better... No one was suggesting she run out and go get meds. Shes told to talk to her peds..
On top the fact that the longer they suffer with the reflux and its left untreated, it can cause damage to their esophagus and throat.
and thats a cryptic and blanketed statement to say that something is wrong with Similac and Enfamil... Whats wrong with it?

I have personal beliefs about medicating infants unless necessary. And I went through hell with my son, but I knew medication wasn't the answer. I knew that while he may have had symptoms of reflux, that wasn't the problem. I knew that labeling any sort of feeding issue or discomfort as an allergy or reflux is oftentimes unnecessary. And no, I am not a DR, but I did a lot of research into formula when NOTHING helped my son. And I'm not going to apologize for not putting my son on medication - even the ped didn't think that was the problem.
If the OP brings her son to the ped and they think it is acid reflux, then by all means she should follow what her ped thinks is the best course of action. But there is also the possibility that it could be the formula. And there's nothing wrong me suggesting she might try another one, before medication, to see if that clears up the issue.
If Enfamil and Similac work, then don't question it or go by what I say. But if it isn't, then it begs the question of whether or not it is the right formula. I knew it wasn't the right one for DS, I wasn't comfortable with the ingredients and their long term effects.
ETA: I am simply a "last resort" type of person. I wanted to make sure I tried everything I could. My ped also didn't thin it was true reflux, therefore we didn't medicate. If she had said, he absolutely needs it, I would have given it to him.

See if the formula change helps....with my DS we ended up on Alimentum, where he improved. You could try taking him to a pediatric GI.

The combination of similac sensitive, ventair bottles and gas drops before each feedling was the answer for us. Also giving it time helped too. Now at 10 months he hasn't gotten the gas drops in a long time, sometimes their little bodies just have to develop also

When DS was a newborn he was miserable. He ate but screamed ALL day. It was so horrible. We put him on a sensitive formula and it helped a tiny bit. Then we put him on Nutramigen and after a few days he was like a completely different baby. It's so hard to go through but you'll find the right formula for him. I promise this won't last forever.

how are his bowel movements?
Are they very frequent? Does he have diaper rash?
He may need a more broken down formula like alimentum or elecare.
All infants have some form of reflux.
Like I suggested earlier-def. see a pediatric GI

He usually has a bm once every 2 days. Never had a diaper rash. We had his bm tested at dr and it was negative for milk protein allergy
