Your opinion on these products

Hi all,

Would love some practical opinions on these items and whether they are needed and why.

1. A rocker/glider chair
2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby
3. rocker/swing for baby
4. diaper genie type of thing

Don't really have friends with kids, so we asked two people in the store.
One person said that #2 is needed but not #3, the other said #3 is needed not #2, lol.

As for #4, we live in an apartment, so the trash chute is down the hall. not sure if its needed

As for #1, we were thinking of just using the bed or couch to feed.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Your opinion on these products

My son LOVED his swing…..it was the best thing we had……this is also the same for the Fisher Price R & P….if i didn't have this…we wouldn't have slept bc of his reflux.

I got a glider/rocker for myself, i used it sometimes….I kept it for my 2nd…so it will go in his room!

I have a diaper genie bc my garbage goes out every other day. It works really well with the smell, as long as you keep up with it.

My son had a bouncer…but used it when he was a little older…

I would say the glider and the bouncer are the two things u really don't need to have….

Definitely a swing. A glider is awesome and my preferred spot to nurse. A seat is nice as another option to put the baby, but not necessary. I never used my diaper genie and actually returned it. Esecially if you plan to breast feed, breast milk poopie diapers hardly smell bad. I just throw them in my regular garbage that goes out every night

1. A rocker/glider chair

If you have the room for it I would get one. It will save your back!! There will be times when you need to hold them for awhile and need it to be quiet and dark or whatever. Having a comfortable place to sit and hold baby helps both of you.

2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby
I use this the most for DD who is 3 months. We also used this for DS.

3. rocker/swing for baby
Neither of my children liked the swing. DS screamed when we put him in it. I tried with DD a few weeks back and she too was not having it. Mine was brand new and never used more than a day between 2 kids...lol

4. diaper genie type of thing
I am NOT a fan of diaper pails. I think its so gross to keep poop diapers lingering around in a pail until its full. Why anyone thinks this is fine is beyond me..lol

That said I live in an apartment as well and we just throw the diapers in shopping bags down the shoot after changing.

Re: Your opinion on these products

We lived in an apt with a trash chute down the hall until DS was 10 months. We registered for a diaper genie but then returned it after my shower. We didnt need it. We had a small simplehuman garbage can for pee diapers and ran poop diapers out to the chute immediately. I was also breastfeeding so DS diapers didnt smell bad until we started solids.

We had a fisherprice snugabunny swing which we bought after a lot of research. I was hesitant to get such a large item when we lived in an apt but it was well worth it for us, DS loved it and it helped calm him down. Make sure you get one that plugs in!

We didnt have a bouncer/vibrating thing and didnt think we needed one. We tried to limit ourselves to just the essentials. We did have a rock n play sleeper which we used a lot although we didnt have DS sleep in it.

Glider we LOVE! I drove myself and my loved ones absolutely nuts obsessing over which one to get and ended up custom-ordering the one I wanted in white wood to match our furniture and in a pale yellow fabric to match DS nursery. Initially I thought it was a waste of money because I didnt use it that much (I would nurse DS on our couch), but I started using it regularly around 4-5 months (DH wanted to reclaim our common area which was where our only TV was and we started a more established nighttime routine) and we still use it all the time at 2.5+ years. I would nurse in it at night, we read books in it at night still, and its soooo comfortable and I love the ottoman it came with. Worth every penny, even in the custom colors Chat Icon

Your opinion on these products

1. A rocker/glider chair: I bought a chair from ikea for DD room. I use it a lot. It is where I do a lot of her feedings.
2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby: not essential early on- I got the tiny love 3 in 1 rocker napper- It has 3 positions and the chair can be used up to 40 lbs.
3. rocker/swing for baby- I have the snugabunny swing and DD really likes it. The swing often soothes her.
4. diaper genie type of thing- I am not a fan of fancy diaper pails. The idea of keeping all those dirty diapers around bothers me. DD is breastfed and her diapers do not smell bad.

Re: Your opinion on these products

1. Rocker/glider: I use it sometimes, but I find our recliner sofa more comfortable with her.

2. bouncer/vibrating thing: yes, but we bought the cheapest one (bc it was the smallest) I use it to drag into the bathroom with me so I can shower. I also put it in the kitchen when I am making dinner. Its great to have to have a moblie place to set her down while I do something.

3. swing: We didn't get one immediately. We decided to wait and judge when she was here if she might like it. She loves being rocked and bounced in the little chair, so we borrowed one from my SIL and she loves it. Gives me a break from holding her all day.

4. diaper genie: we mostly cloth diaper, so not relevant, but even when we use disposables, she is ebf, so her poop doesn't smell that bad

Re: Your opinion on these products

here are my thoughts:

1. A rocker/glider chair - if you have the space for one, get it
i would nurse dd there (and also bottle feed her once i stopped bf-ing). i keep it in her room. i thought we could feed her on the couch, but when you have people over (esp if you are bfing) its nice to have a quiet place to go and nurse. plus, the middle of the night feedings are easier if you dont need to take them out of their room to feed

2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby
i had a bouncer seat that was great bc it is small enough to fit in the bathroom with me while i showered and dd would sit it in quietly allowing me to do what i needed to do

3. rocker/swing for baby -
we loved our plug in swing! it calmed dd down if she was cranky, she would also nap in it.

4. diaper genie type of thing - we had DD while living in an apartment...so there was no real need for a diaper genie (since we cant fit large garbage bags down the garbage chute, we were taking the trash out daily). we ended up getting one and found it helfpul bc it really does contain the odor. with #2 we are living in a house, so i already got a second diaper genie bc i know our garbage wont be taken out daily

I LOVE my Diaper Genie. I think it works AWESOME! My kids rooms never smell of diapers.

I LOVE my glider, I used it EVERY day with my DD until she was 4 for feedings when she was a baby, soothing her, and reading books before bed. Once my son was born I moved it into his room and I use it every day with him now for the same.

My kids never cared too much for the swing but they both LOVED vibrating chairs. We had the FP Newborn to Toddler Rocker which they spent A LOT of time in. They even napped in there too!! I highly recommend it!!

Re: Your opinion on these products

1. A rocker/glider chair: We have one in DD's room. I think I sat in it once. Total waste for us.

2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby: Loved this! It's lightweight and very convenient to move from room to room, as needed. I can't imagine not having had it.

3. rocker/swing for baby: We borrowed a swing from a friend. DD was never a fan and it takes up a lot of room.

4. diaper genie: We were in a condo, in a building, for the first 2 months of DD's life. The diaper genie was not at all necessary because we'd just toss stinky diapers in a plastic bag and chuck them down the trash chute. Once we moved into our house, it's been a real must-have for us. Poop diapers stink and neither DH nor I want that smell wafting through the house...even if the trash goes out nightly.

Re: Your opinion on these products

1. A rocker/glider chair - never had one, BF on the bed or armchair/couch in LR

2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby - I couldn't imagine not having the bouncy chair, we used it all the time

3. rocker/swing for baby - We had a hand me down swing, DC 1 hated it, DC 2 tolerated it, but I didn't use it that much, it depends on the baby

4. diaper genie type of thing - did not have one, did not miss it.

Re: Your opinion on these products

My opinion.

1. WE both love our glider. It was used to rock the baby back to sleep. I used it to feed her during the night time feeds. Now that she is older, we use it for reading time before bed. We snuggle on it since it's very cushioned and we read 3-4 stories and then she climbs into bed. We plan to do the same with DC #2 and moved it into the new baby room, but DD still likes to sit in it and read by herself to her dolls.

2. We got a bouncer to use downstairs to set the baby in when we were active doing something else - taking the dog out, cooking, using bathroom (showering), eating at the table. It had toys to amuse her and sounds. Plus, it was portable and easily able to take it places where we knew there were no baby items we could borrow.

3. The swing was a godsend when DD had her days and nights mixed up. She would wake up and want to play all night. We would feed her and then put her in the swing in our bedroom and it would sway her to sleep, so we could sleep before the next feed. We stopped using it as soon as she learned to sleep through the night near 6-8 weeks old.

4. Diaper genie deluxe is what we have. My ILs take care of our child and they don't have anything. They take the diaper and throw it in with their garbage and it goes out daily, if not more frequently. We like ours as it covers the smell and since we only change the baby upstairs in their room, it's centralized for us and gets emptied 2x/week during trash pick-up.

Your opinion on these products

Thanks for all the information/opinions everyone!

Still undecided on things, lol.

1. A rocker/glider chair - its expensive, and we have very little room.
Our new place is one bedroom, with a tiny second room. With a bed in the second room, there is no room for a chair (Im talking about a REGULAR chair, let alone a gliding chair, lol)
So if we got a glider, it would have to go in the living room. and even there...we're not sure if we have the room.

2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby - are there any thats plug in? battery powered seems so wacky, you'll be replacing batteries every day!!

3. rocker/swing for baby - these are so expensive also.
Maybe we'll get the rock and sleeper instead of the vibrating chair and swing.
Hopefully that will cover both #2 and #3.

4. diaper genie type of thing
We'll probably cut this out.

Thanks everyone

Re: Your opinion on these products

I'll be honest..after having 3 kids, the less you have the better. It just takes up space.

The only thing I would definitely get is the bouncy seat.

The trash, even if the chute is down the hall you can still take out every night.

If you have the room for a glider it's nice, but I would get one that looks like furniture. I have a wood one from my son and I wished I spent the extra money an upholstered one. It is sitting in my DD#2's room collecting dust and I have no where to put it.

At my parent's house they have an extra rocking chair, but its dangerous!

Just did a quick google search and found some pictures, hard to tell from this angle, but it is hard to get into it, because the normal position is reclined, so as you sit, you are pulling it forward, so as soon as you sit down fully, you fall backwards

http://shard3.1stdibs.us.com/archivesD/upload/8142/1399/XXX_8142_1267553740_1.jpg

You can kind of see how far it reclines on its own here
http://shard1.1stdibs.us.com/archivesD/upload/8363/444/img_2994_1.jpg

I am thinking this might not be a good rocking chair, too dangerous

My son LIVED in his bouncer for the first 4 months of his life LOL

I gladly spent $$$ on batteries...it was the only thing he would nap in.

3. rocker/swing for baby- see above

4. diaper genie type of thing- i like it, I empty it often so it never smells or anything for me it is easy and I don't want poo diapers stinking up my kitchen

For the rocker/glider - join a buy sell group on facebook. I see them being sold on there all the time. I got mine on there for $50 and it's one that retails for over $400! I couldn't justify paying full price for it.

I think it depends on the baby. My 5 week old loves the swing but isn't a fan of the vibrating seat. They sell portable swings that don't take up as much room. I agree w/ pp about joining a buy/sell group or checking craigslist or the thread on parenting and look for gently used if your not sure what you want/need.

1. A rocker/glider chair Nice to have, but certainly not necessary. I have a glider in my living room, but I rarely used it to feed or rock DS.

2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby I have the Snugapuppy vibrating seat and my DS pretty much hates it. He doesn't last for more than a few minutes in. However, he loves his jumperoo, so I definitely think that's worthwile.

3. rocker/swing for baby Absolute must! My DS loves, loves, loves his swing. It's a lifesaver sometimes!

4. diaper genie type of thing I definitely use mine, though I know some people can take them or leave them. I like mine (I have the Arm & Hammer diaper pail) and it works fine.

Re: Your opinion on these products

1. A rocker/glider chair

If you have a large enough room, I would get one. I didn't use mine all the time but on those nights where she had trouble falling asleep it was good to have.

2. bouncer/vibrating thing for baby
DD loved her rocker. It was also a convenient place to keep her when he had to do something and doesn't take up much room.

3. rocker/swing for baby
DD hated her swing, but I know most babies love it. I would still prob get it.

4. diaper genie type of thing
Did not like the idea of keeping poopy diapers in a pail in her room. I prefere he garbage so we could take it right out.
