This is why you never leave kids in a running car
Thankfully it ended well......this time
BRIGHTON, Colo. - A 4-year-old boy has been reunited with his mother after a carjacking, kidnapping and high-speed chase that spanned from Longmont to Douglas County.
Marta Rodriguez left her pajama-clad son in a running red Ford Edge at a Bradley gas station at 1750 Main St. in Longmont just after 6 a.m., police said.
"I ran in real quick. I was there probably 2 minutes or something," Rodriguez told 7NEWS through a Spanish translator. "When I came back out, the car was not there anymore."
"She just parked outside the business and walked in and the guy jumped in the car. So, we're talking maybe 15 or 20 feet," said Jeff Satur with the Longmont Police Department.
Police spotted the suspected vehicle and started pursuing him around 7:15 a.m. During the police pursuit the suspect abandoned the red SUV with the boy inside and then carjacked a gold minivan.
The boy, Allan Rodriguez, was checked by medical personnel and was reunited with his parents at the Brighton police station, Satur said.
The boy was asked if he was scared and whether the suspect talked to him. The boy said the suspect did not speak and it felt like they were "flying."
"My son was scared and was crying in the car," Rodriguez said.
7NEWS reporter Lindsey Sablan asked how his mother was feeling after being reunited with her son.
"A lot of joy. I was glad when I saw my son. Often there are kids who are never found when they’re taken and I thought I would never see him again," Rodriguez said. "I want to thank the police for helping me find my son."
Satur said she will not face any charges for leaving her son in a running vehicle.
"She had a very rough day, the worst day that could ever happen to a mother -- to watch your car with your child get stolen right in front of you," Satur said. "We're talking very short distances. It is not like she left her kid in the car for hours on end."

I saw this last night on the news. She is extremely lucky. When are people going to learn, you DON'T leave an unlocked car, running with your child in it!
Amazing nobody was hurt or killed because of this a$$hole!

Crazy. Glad it had a happy ending. Too many people are carefree with kids.

I just can't imagine who thinks it's a good idea to leave a child in a running, unlocked vehicle. The stupidity in this world really amazes me.

2 minutes is 2 minutes too long! Ugh, that poor child. Thankfully the outcome wasn't tragic. Nothing is worth the potential dangers of leaving a child unattended in a car.

Honestly anyone who does this should be arrested. Child endangerment, plain and simple. This shyt infuriates me so much.

Honestly - there are times that I have been tempted, because I only need a minute and it would be so much quicker without dragging the kids out - but then I think of stories like this. It's just not worth the risk. I even take the keys out when I pull up to the library and have to walk probably 7 ft to the book drop off.

There are soooo many women I personally know who do this. It boggles my mind. I know it's tempting and it's easier but its against the law and its just plain dangerous!

Ive left my DS in the car while going to the ATM with the keys out and door locked. I watched him the whole time but even that to me can be dangerous. I started to think what if someone mugged me and took my keys and then ran off with my car and kid. So now I just drag him out.

My DH did this once (was my FI at the time), left my SS who was 7 at the time in the car to go into a Bodega. A cop saw it. Ripped him a new one and gave him a ticket. DH never did this again.
I remember being so irate that he did that. God bless that cop, it was when we lived in queens.

Re: This is why you never leave kids in a running car
I can't believe anyone would ever even think of doing this! I won't even leave my pocketbook in my locked car, let alone my CHILD with the car running and doors unlocked?
Seriously? How can anyone think this is even almost ok?

Right? I know someone who thinks nothing of doing it and then saying, Oh I went into the party store and left the kids (younger than 6 and a baby) in the car.

Re: This is why you never leave kids in a running car
I cannot and never will understand this. I have a friend with 3 kids who locks the kids in the car and leaves her oldest daughter with the keys. The daughter opens the door from the inside when the mom comes out but I think about what if a fire happened. Her 7 year old would most certainly not be able to get all three kids out of the car. I HATE when parents put convenience over the safety of their kids...hate it hate it hate it...and they are the very ones who would be crying and surprised if something bad were to happen their kids.

I had a friend who told me a woman she worked with left her sleeping baby in the car and ran into the MALL! the kicker, for mascara!!! YES MASCARA! She didn't want to wake her baby so she locked the car up and ran in 'real quick' to get mascara. The best part is someone saw the baby all alone in the car, called the cops and she got arrested!
People are sooo stupid. I mean just plain stupid. I have never in my life left my car running to go anywhere even when I was without child. I wouldn't want someone to steal my car. And now with a child, do you know how many times I either decide to not stop for something because I don't feel like dragging my daughter out OR if its food or coffee I look up where the nearest drive thru is LOL And when I pump gas I always use my credit card so I never have to leave my daughter alone for 1 second.

I always wish someone would. I don't comment since I don't feel its my place. God only knows what other kind of chances someone like this takes with their children's lives. I just know that I would never leave my child alone with a friend's parent who makes choices like that. JMO.

Sidebar - my mom left me and my bro in her car while it was running.... Ummmmmmm we crashed it through a fence. Popped it in neutral I guess. I was maybe 8 at the time. She never did that again.

Holy crap that's crazy. My sister and I used to be left in the car all the time. It sucked and till this day I hate waiting in a car for more than 5 minutes. I start getting antsy. They never left the keys in the car though and they used to leave us there for a long time.
