I never understand these posts by teachers. If you can't make it in, don't go in and take a personal day like everyone else does. End of story.

I agree but that is just based on MY experience (distance that I have to drive, AWD car) this morning. We left a few minutes early, drove very carefully and got to school fine and I am at work on time. It's mostly slushy and yes it's messy but I don't see it being AS dangerous as they've been saying on the news.
Also this is why I sometimes think that ALL of NYC DOE should not always be lumped into one.
During the last storm in Jan I almost kept my kids home but felt guilty because school was open. I found out that 7 teachers were out, but there was coverage for all. Both of my kids said ALL kids were present (31 in one class and 25 in the other) and only one my DDs had a sub. It was a regular day, learning, homework, no movies. And I was glad I sent them.

I am a LI parent and a NYC teacher so that argument kinda sucks.
My students also do not live around the block. Some of them have over an hour commute. Some walk for miles. It is only the elementary schools that are generally local.
This is true. My junior high was a couple of miles away and my high school was in Manhattan, a bus and two trains and a two-avenue walk once I made it to the city. But I did it because that's where I wanted to go to school. Snow, ice, hurricane, hot-as-hell days.
My point is, if you choose to live so far away from your workplace, these issues will come up but its not the employer's responsibility to tell you not to come in. Make the choice yourself, just as you chose to live and work in two places that are not geographically close.

The difference between LI and the city is that in the city they do not rely on school busses as much as LI. Kids in the city take public transportation. On LI it's all school busses.
And closing schools is more about the safety of kids than the teachers.

I agree, this is a little disturbing. I hope my DDs teachers don't feel this way. I have 110% respect for their teachers and their choices. Each and every one they have had so far in this school. I also have faith and trust in the principal and other staff. If they need to take a day off today that is totally fine. If only 10 kids show up in the class, I hope that the teachers are not just "babysitting" and actually teaching them!

A LOT of city teachers live on LI and it's a hazard trying to get in to school when the weather is this bad. The roads are AWFUL today.
I use to commute from Stony Brook to Queens when I was teaching and I would always call out on these types of days. There wasn't even a point trying to get out there, it would've taken me HOURS only to be at work for hardly any time at all and then turn around and come home.
Aside from that, if you do make it in on days like this you do NOTHING all day because most of the staff is out and many of the kids stay home. There also isn't enough staff for the kids that are left so they end combining classes and you sit around playing games and watching movies all day. You can't teach when you have a mix of grade levels in your room which happens a lot on these days.
As for working parents, their kids are ultimately the parents problem........NOT the schools. If you have kids you HAVE to have provisions in place for when schools close, your kid is sick, etc. etc. Schools need to make a closing decision based on safety for all, not based on who needs babysitting that day.
The NYCDOE is the most mismanaged, poorly run, piece of shit school system on earth. In the case of today, it's shameful that they expect teachers and students to report to school when EVERYONE in the tri state area is closed. Greedy idiots. I feel bad for the teachers in the city today, they should be home safe and sound and NOT on the roads putting themselves in danger to babysit today. Ridiculous!

Clearly you've never taught in the city. Trust me, on these days it is babysitting. I can't understand the constant complaints about schools not closing. Not everything comes to a standstill because of freezing rain. Why do teachers (as a parent I don't complain about the lack of school closings) have this expectation that schools should close because of weather. The rest of us go out and go to work.
ETA: Just read other posts where today in school is likened to babysitting. If that's what teachers choose to call it fine, but that doesn't mean that it's a reason for a teacher not to go to work. Again, the rest of the working public goes to work.

Yes, it does offend me because teachers play the guilt card of "you're risking your children's lives." If I can't make it to work, I take a personal day. Is that not an option for teachers?
Also, I understand venting but understand your audience: other people on here are not teachers and are either on their way to work or at work (like myself).

On a day like today, a teacher, even if IN, 1) would never teach a lesson b/c more than half of the students would not be there and therefore they would not really be able to do a lesson. 2) yes it is babysitting, that's a FACT, b/c the reality is when half of the staff calls out, what do you think the school can realistically do about that?
They have no choice but to put the kids into one large area and have all of the teachers present staff the room. And thus, a movie will go on. It's not rocket science even if you are NOT a teacher, to figure this out.

I am not a teacher. The bottom line is some parents don't have the option to stay home. Thus, when we have to go to work, it is frustrating to hear the teachers say we shouldn't have to go to work because they feel like they are babysitting is  .

You're missing the point. When the city schools stay open on days like today they have a severe staffing issue so YOUR child is basically sitting around, stuffed in a classroom, and doing nothing all day.
If all that's being done in school that day is crowd control and there is NO teaching going on, which is almost always the case whether you like to believe it or not, there is NO reason to be open.
There is a reason why the entire tri state area closed schools today. Why risk the safety of your students and staff? It's not worth it, missing a day of school is NOT the end of the world.
If my DD's school didn't close I wouldn't kept her home anyway. I don't want to be on the roads therefore I would NOT stick my DD on a bus to be driven around on slick, icy, dangerous roads. Not worth it.

Yes this is what I heard as well. I know when I was a kid we all walked to school. It's wasn't far at all. Most kids came in early for breakfast. Most parents worked. Where would these kids go if the schools closed. Most parents couldn't just take off of work. Growing up snow wasn't a big deal. We just walked slower lol.
A LOT of city teachers live on LI and it's a hazard trying to get in to school when the weather is this bad. The roads are AWFUL today.
I use to commute from Stony Brook to Queens when I was teaching and I would always call out on these types of days. There wasn't even a point trying to get out there, it would've taken me HOURS only to be at work for hardly any time at all and then turn around and come home.
Aside from that, if you do make it in on days like this you do NOTHING all day because most of the staff is out and many of the kids stay home. There also isn't enough staff for the kids that are left so they end combining classes and you sit around playing games and watching movies all day. You can't teach when you have a mix of grade levels in your room which happens a lot on these days.
As for working parents, their kids are ultimately the parents problem........NOT the schools. If you have kids you HAVE to have provisions in place for when schools close, your kid is sick, etc. etc. Schools need to make a closing decision based on safety for all, not based on who needs babysitting that day.
The NYCDOE is the most mismanaged, poorly run, piece of shit school system on earth. In the case of today, it's shameful that they expect teachers and students to report to school when EVERYONE in the tri state area is closed. Greedy idiots. I feel bad for the teachers in the city today, they should be home safe and sound and NOT on the roads putting themselves in danger to babysit today. Ridiculous!

Ps. To the other ladies who insulted me, I'm a VERY dedicated and respected teacher and you have some nerve saying maybe I shouldn't teach because I care about my safety!
Than why not take a personal day? Is that not an option?

Agreed. This weather is not nasty enough to warranty a city wide closing. When I was a kid in the city, YEARS would go by without a closing.
Not nasty enough? Easy for you to say! It's just that LI schools care about the staff & children. They're very fortunate. We on the other hand are treated like glorified babysitters!
I understand that you are upset about the schools not closing, but everyone here is just saying that they have to go to work, made it to work without a problem and the fact that you have to teach on a snowy day does not make you a babysitter. If you feel that way, perhaps you should consider a new profession because you clearly do not empathize with working parents who have no choice but to go to work and I personally am always offended by the "babysitter" comment on snowy days.
Clearly you've never taught in the city. Trust me, on these days it is babysitting. The schools simply don't have the staff to look after each class so classes are combined and it's really a matter of getting through the day. It's not a teaching situation on days where the majority of your staff is out.
I know, I've been through it many times when I was teaching.
I am not a teacher. The bottom line is some parents don't have the option to stay home. Thus, when we have to go to work, it is frustrating to hear the teachers say we shouldn't have to go to work because they feel like they are babysitting is .
You had kids. It's up to YOU to plan for school closures, sick kids, etc.

Couldn't the same be said for LI schools? Most working parents can't just take off but they don't have a choice. Why is NYC any different?
I am a LI parent and a NYC teacher so that argument kinda sucks.

Dare I say it? The reality is in NYC you have much more poverty than the majority of towns in LI. There are many more families within NYC schools that rely on the food, shelter, and parents/families who have jobs that they cannot take off from since if they don't go in, they won't get paid.
This is really the reality, therefore, that adds to the mayor's pressures of not being able to easily close the school.
