Maybe looking into this for my MIL as she will be moving into a new house soon and will be by herself.

Your thoughts on it?

Yes! My grandma has one and it really is a life saver. Best thing my mom and aunt decided on.
Just a side story- she was cooking one day and left the oven on for a few hours. The Life Alert went off and someone intercoms her and asks if she's ok and that she left her oven on. Somehow it started smoking and she was in another part of her house. It really is amazing.

My downstairs neighbor has it - and the intercom is loud.
She decided to "test the system" at 10:30 one night.
I had just fallen asleep and jumped out of my skin because I thought someone was in my living room. That's how loud it can be set.

For someone living alone, I think it is a great thing. I need to look into this for FIL who is 80, lives alone, and stubbornly refuses to use a cane when he walks.

My grandmother has it and it def saved her life once. BUT it only works if they actually wear it which my grandmother doesnt like to. Theres been a few close calls where she should have been wearing it but didnt 'feel like it' and hung it up somewhere in the house. =/ It def works and its SUPER loud. lol

My 97 yo grandma has it. She lives alone. Just know that if the have to send ems they will break the door in if no one can open the door.

My Gm fell on time and she crawled to the door just so they wouldn't kick it in.

We used to have an elderly next door neighbor who had it, and we were the contact people on hers. It saved her more than once! I think it's great!

Re: anyone's parents/grandparents have Life Alert

Many of the clients I have worked with who didn't qualify for 24: 7 care, but were too risky to be alone all the time have it and it's been a lifesaver.

And my having a background in home care for many years, most places it is policy to bust the door down if a client who is a health and safety risk cannot be reached.

Even if they aren't per se, but something "out of the ordinary" is happening with them, EMS will bust in.

I know people get pissed at the thought of this, or have had it happen and all is well, but imagine if it wasn't?

All not being well happens all too frequently.

My mil had it and really is a great thing to have. It's almost like a body alarm system, a great thing to have for older parents.

I'm looking into the NSLIJ "on call" for my father. It's linked to their EMS main call center.

I just want to say, that even before I began working for the health system, one of the guys that oversees the call center came to do a presentation at my last job.

They are so much better to call over EMS, because there's always a NS/LIJ ambulance somewhere close and will take you to your NS/LIJ hospital of choice, especially if it's something life threatening where you need the best medical team.

We used to run into issues at my old agency with clients being taken to the worst hospitals that weren't connected to their specialists, then discharged with no follow up in a crisis situation.

By calling that #, you avoid all the run around and needing to transfer hospitals.

Don't quote me, but *I believe* they even take to a non NS/LIJ hospital when medically appropriate.

The # is 516/631-719-5000.
