16M Old & Bottle

DD is 16M and I'd like her to drink 15-20 oz of milk a day but she isnt getting it bc she refuses to drink milk in a sippy cup. At 16M she should be off the bottle all together. She has no problem drinking water or juice from the sippy but if I put milk in it she wont drink it. So I dont make her. Looking for some advice on how to get her to drink it from the sippy.

Re: 16M Old & Bottle

My DD has never been a big drinker. The only way I got her to take milk from a cup is from the Nuk cups, that are basically glorified bottles, since they still have a silicone spout. I only get 10-15 oz in her this way, over the course of 4 cups of milk! I am thrilled that we're no longer using Dr. Brown's bottles, but I feel like I need to get her to drink milk from a straw cup. She refused to, and I need her to get the little that she does drink. It's so frustrating!

ETA: They say that if our kids are getting calcium from other sources, then it's okay for them not to have so much milk. So, if your DD eats yogurt and cheese, I wouldn't worry so much, and I'd just give her the cup until she eventually gives in and drinks from it. It might mean a day or two of no milk. At the time I was first trying to transition my DD, she was still on Neocate, and wasn't interested in cheese or yogurt, so I stuck with the Nuk cups.

Re: 16M Old & Bottle

i went cold turkey at 12m with my twins. i would hold the sippy like i'd hold the bottle and hold them on me as i was feeding it to them. Eventually they just held it themselves. You can also use a boppy to feed her as she holds the sippy, to mimis the bottle feeting position.

Either way you should get her off the bottle- its terrible for her teeth.

Re: 16M Old & Bottle

DD1 refused milk in her sippy and at 18 months I stopped bottle. She has not had a SIP of milk since then (shes 3.5 now). The ped said as long as she gets her calcium in other foods she is fine.

DD2 (17 months)...we're going down the same path. She won't take a sippy of milk so I still give her 2 bottles a day. I'm giving her until 18 months to take milk in a sippy or she's not getting any bc we need to stop bottles too.

So well...I guess I have no advice. lol.

No advice here but just wanted to say you're not alone. DS is 17 mos and still takes a bottle in the morning. I'm waiting till his 18 month visit with the ped so he can push me to stop the bottle. Lol

Re: 16M Old & Bottle

You are not alone. I tried so many sippy cups and ds refused to drink milk from them. He would drink water all day from them. When he was around 21 months I bought the take & toss straw cups just to see if that would work. I made a big deal about it saying this is his big boy cup & he got so excited. I was so happy that he finally started to drink milk from them!

Hang in there. Your dd will eventually be off bottles & IMO 16 months is still a baby. If she needs a bottle it's not the worst thing in the world.

Re: 16M Old & Bottle

DS1 was off the bottle at 18m but stopped drinking milk. Dr said not to worry as long as he was taking yogurt, cheese etc, which he was, he ate yogurt daily.

DS2 is 2.5yo and still takes a bottle. Its the only way to get him to drink milk and he is a picky eater. He has a very limited diet and will spit out anything he doesnt want/like. So I dont push it. At some point I will take it away but right now I just dont see the rush (he takes 2 bottle a day - nap and bedtime for about 10oz total)

Re: 16M Old & Bottle

DD is 15 mo and about a month ago we went cold turkey without the Bottle. It took a few days but i gave her the tommy tippie spout with milk every morning and her water in a different sippy during the day. She did not like the chill of the milk in the am so i heat it up a bit for her and she drinks the whole thing. I try not to give her milk in any other sippy. So far it works for just the morning milk she really doesnt drink milk during the day but I give her Cheese and yogurt to fill in the day.

So she already knows how to drink from the sippy? That's almost 3/4 of the battle! LOL.

I'd just keep doing it.

My DD is 16m and drinks milk with breakfast and dinner, water with snacks and lunch... maybe try that? Only milk with two meals and only water with others?
