I don't think it's illegal - Unfortunately, it's a very sad, disgraceful place to live when people have NO respect for others, no compassion, no common courtesy and a disgusting sense of sellf importance and entitlement.
If it were ME, and I had no place to go, I would have turned my back on the person so they could only film the back of my head and let them scream at my back -

They did- the filmer was extremely persistent, reaching around them with the phone, plus they couldn't really hold on to anything facing the other direction. It was rough.
It makes me want to leave NY.... less and less and less is holding me here. I don't know what it is, but lately, everything about this place just makes me sad to be here. 
ETA: Don't get me wrong though- I'm all for it in instances where the subject of the video is doing something illegal or harassing someone. Otherwise, I feel like it should be illegal, at least if it's done in a manner like I witnessed.

Yes, it was featured on the news. The exhibit was called "Neighbors". Was actually a cool exhibit, some really great images but apparently the dwellers of the Tribeca building were unaware they were being photographed in their apartments with floor to ceiling windows.

As for your sitch, if I was the person being filmed I would have gotten out my phone and started filming her and then gone to a police booth at the stop she got out on and filed a report. As far as I'm concerned, the way the woman filming was acting was in a menacing and harassing way.
Just curious, have you presented this sitch to any of your coworkers? Maybe they could answer your question.

that situation would definitely push me to a place where I wouldn't give a flying fig about the law. They'd get 1...maybe 2 warnings to get the phone out of my face before they eat it as their last meal...and then it's go time.

The subject of the video was me.
ETA: At the next stop, the filmer tried to hold the train saying she wanted to get a cop and have me arrested. I agreed to get off the train with her so as not to hold up everyone's commute. I told her to go get a cop and I'd wait on the platform, which I had every intention of waiting. I had ZERO intentions of following her to go get a cop where she could corner me or throw me down the stairs or whatever. She continued to hurl racial epithets at me and tried pushing me towards the edge of the platform. She told me she was going to "beat the white out of me." Again, no one intervened. Not even to get a cop. I didn't expect anyone to stand between her and I, but I did hope that someone would go get help. Nobody did. Another woman came over, also black, and sided with the filmer, despite seeing how aggressive she was while I stood there silently telling her to go get a cop so we could finish this business. Another train came into the station and I said if you're not going to go get a cop, let's get on the train and go our separate ways. She said fine, it's over. I got onto the train in a different car than she did and sat on an inside seat, quietly reading my Nook, determined to forget the whole sordid tale. She got onto my car at the next stop. Other people on the train later said they could tell there was something wrong with her. She was muttering and pacing and grilling me. She got off the train several stops before I did, fortunately, because I have a feeling she would've followed me and assaulted me. As it was, when she got off the train, she threw food at me and punched me in the back of the head, called me a stupid b!tch and ran. At least since the threat was no longer imminent, everyone rushed to help. They made sure I was okay physically and helped me clean myself up, they also encouraged me to file a report and offered to give me their names and cell phone numbers in case I needed witnesses. I have not yet filed a report. I don't know how to do it or what good it will actually do.

I'm sorry you went through that. I'm even more sorry that nobody came to your defense because I know I would have. I can't stand when i see ghetto little hood rats trying to bully people or intimidate.
I really hate this trend of social media lately...it's gone too far. now everybody thinks its ok to post pics of strangers and it aggravates me. "oh look, a bum on the street...let me take his picture like he's some sort of flipping zoo animal" I have a person on my friends list who does this. she took a pic of a man in a dumpster and posted it on fb with the caption "EW". I wanted to say "*****, his shirt says waste management...at least he has a damn job! unlike you who has no life and takes pictures of the most insignificantly mundane things" ugh...really gets under my skin. I mean...some of those "people of walmart are kind of asking for it...and i do laugh when i see those kinds of pics. One time i saw a person with a life sized rim hanging from a wallet chain as a fashion statement...I HAD to take a pic...but it was grainy and def didn't show a face. but it is just getting out of hand.

Please, please, PLEASE file a report especially if you have other people agreeing to be witnesses.
Clearly she was WAY off her rocker and yes you were definitely the victim of reverse discrimination. The subway stops have video cameras, if they know what station this happened in they can perhaps get the video footage of her.
Now I really wish you'd had videoed her...

ETA: I'm really sorry no one came to your aid until after the fact or at the very least tried to get a cop to help. I will admit I'd probably be scared to do or say something but at the VERY LEAST I'd go find a cop to intervene.

wow...i can't...I am really really angry reading this. PLEASE file a report. hopefully she was caught on camera somewhere. I wish you would have filmed her in return to have her on camera. PLEASE PLEASE file a report. this lady needs to be caught because she's not firing on all cylinders

Clearly she was WAY off her rocker and yes you were definitely the victim of reverse discrimination. The subway stops have video cameras, if they know what station this happened in they can perhaps get the video footage of her.

I was really surprised that the woman joined in with her... she was trying to stop the filmer from harassing me, but because "I don't want this white woman getting you in trouble. You're not going to let this become your fault." There were at least 20 people around us on the platform. I actually asked a woman to get a cop and started to explain what was happening and she actually said to me "Whatever, I don't care." and put her hand in my face for me to leave her alone.
I know they CAN do all those things to find this woman, but really, and I mean really think deep down... do you think anyone will? Do you think anyone cares enough? I truly doubt it. And it makes me so sad. I've been feeling this way for awhile, just very sensitive, my emotions bubbling right below the surface. The news and everything, the gov't shut down, the bikers, I mean, it's all just so.... sad. I have very little faith left in the human race.

I understand what you're saying, I think it's more to do with the "majority group" being attacked. But statistically, I'm not sure Caucasians are in the majority so perhaps that term is truly incorrect these days.

I couldn't agree more. I get it ALL the time- even from secretaries at work. I even asked my DH last night "What is it about my face that makes black women (not ever men) hate me so much?" I hate to make it about that, but it IS about that. She was unbalanced and spoiling for a fight and she saw a little white girl and decided to go for it. And every single person, myself included, let her. I just... I didn't know what to do. I was VERY afraid after she tried to push me toward the platform edge. VERY.

she's going to come across the WRONG person and karma will definitely get her...but still report it. because i'm sure this is not the first time nor the last time she behaves like this. pushing towards or on a train platform is DEFINITELY something that needs to be reported.
